A Must Have who watched "Dae Jang Geum",
By Charlie Brown (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ost (Audio CD)
I am simply copying and pasting a review by a person whose name is Nicole:
it is really about how one remains true to where one started by overcoming one's own greed and desire. The lyrics of the BEAUTIFUL theme song roughly translates into; "Just because one comes here, one doesn't stay foreve, just because one leaves, one doesn't go away forever." In my opinion, this IS the real theme of the show, letting it go and humbly accept what's human (high and low of life, birth and death)..

Lovely Music,

Original Soundtrack from the fantastic Korean 54 episode story recently shown on the Asian Television Network. The music complemented a wonderfully written story about 16th century Korea and the little girl who grew up following her mother's footsteps, first as head lady in the royal kitchen and then as the first woman physician to the king. It is virtually a soap opera with such highs and lows emotionally. There is such joy and sadness. Each episode is like a cliff hanger of old time serials. Not only do I highly recommend the music CD, but also the DVD which is also known as Jewel in the Palace

Great Korean Soundtrack,

One of the best parts of Dae Jang Geum is the excellent soundtrack! It's like a blend of traditional Eastern and Medieval European styles, producing a wonderfully magical sound. It's mostly instrumental, but there are a few songs, one of which is even in English.
But either Amazon has a really bad supplier or else they're trying to stick it to the customer, because imports of offical legitimate Korean CDs generally sell for less than American CDs...

I enjoyed listening to this CD, as well as viewing the 54 episodes of this great Korean drama. The music is great, but the CD is 62 minutes long, so there was more room to include some of the other great music tracks from the drama. The CD is just a small sampling of the fantastic music found in the original DVD collection.

One of the elements that contributed to the power of the Korean Drama "Dae Jang Geum" ("Jewel in the Palace") was this excellent score. The soundtrack album contains all of the major leitmotifs from the show as continuously developing themes, later cut and pasted artfully to deepen the psychological power of the scene. There may be one or two minor variations that are not captured on this compilation, but the essential music is found here.
The soundtrack is an interesting mix of western scoring with Western & authentic Korean instruments, very well-played (and sung). On the CD, there is also a small video (no subtitles, unfortunately) of the scoring of the show, which leads to an even greater appreciation for the care and committment devoted to creating this series, a well-integrated work of art. An interview of the tenor Safina is, as I recall, in English. That they made use of an international star cross-over tenor (Safina sang the Police's "Roxanne" in "Moulin Rouge") has been remarked on before as an example of the committment to making this production something special. He sings the "Hopeless Love" theme. The English translations of both this number and a version of the main title theme are fairly crude and, from more literal translations I have read, lose the subtlety of the originals. But the scoring on the love theme is top notch and the "O-na-ri" little girls' chorus is hard to listen to without a smile on your face. The more wistful older-womens' version is also here. A very enjoyable CD. |
