Book Description

January 7, 1999
Osteoporosis currently affects 25 million people in the United States, and as the baby boomers enter their fifties, this bone-weakening disease is poised to strike millions more. Because of this disease, many older people will suffer from a bone fracture at some point , and far too many of these fractures will result in permanent disability.
The good news is that this devastating "silent epidemic" is entirely preventable, and in The Osteoporosis Book, readers of all ages will find everything they need to know to slow, stop, and even reverse the bone loss that causes this crippling disease. Written by Dr. Nancy E. Lane, a leading investigator and clinician in the field of osteoporosis, it is an indispensable guide to the exciting medical breakthroughs that have taken place in the past few years--in bone density measurement, in estrogen therapy, and in our knowledge of the bone cycle--that now allow doctors to predict who is at risk and to monitor these individuals in their fifties, before a fracture occurs. Readers learn to evaluate--and whenever possible, eliminate--the risk factors in their own lives. "What vitamins should I take? Is hormone replacement therapy right for me? And what about exercise?" The answers are here. And for those already affected by osteoporosis, Dr. Lane provides the most effective and up-to-date medical and practical advice available anywhere for coping with its aches and pains and safeguarding against further deterioration.
Impeccably researched and reassuringly accessible, The Osteoporosis Book empowers readers to make informed healthcare choices that will enhance the quality of their lives for decades to come. It has been endorsed by the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Lane, a clinician and leading researcher in the field of osteoporosis, has written a concise, authoritative overview of this major health problem largely affecting women. The Osteoporosis Book is organized in two parts, with early chapters devoted to educating the lay reader on the life cycle of bone and reasons for its loss. Risk factors and different types of fractures are identified, and diagnostic tests are explained. Later chapters discuss the many types of estrogen replacement therapy and medications other than hormones to prevent and treat osteoporosis. The bone-building agents and the role of Vitamin D and exercise in maintaining healthy bone are also covered. While nutrition is not emphasized, several cookbooks appear in an appendix. Lane makes effective use of case studies throughout the text to illustrate typical risk situations and treatment options. Recommended for both public and academic libraries for the more sophisticated consumer.ASue Hollander, Univ. of Illinois at Chicago Lib. of the Health Sciences, Rockford

From Booklist

Although much more widespread among women, osteoporosis also strikes men, so this overview of the disease speaks to a larger audience than many may suspect. Researcher and teacher Lane uses her experience as a clinician to add greatly to the book, notably in the case histories she cites and the understanding of patients she expresses. She describes how bone grows and decreases, then distinguishes between the major types of osteoporosis. Diagnosis of the disease is easier now and is made earlier because doctors have the means to measure bone mass, whereas previously the first indication was an osteoporotic fracture. Lane characterizes the most likely candidates for osteoporosis and considers treatment at length, pointing out gaps in scientific and medical understanding of many processes and relationships. Her main theme, however, is prevention, which involves proper food, a healthy lifestyle, and exercise (she discusses exercises to avoid and the danger of overexercising, too). William Beatty

5.0 out of 5 stars much needed info for EVERYONE on osteoporosis; well done!, December 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Osteoporosis Book: A Guide for Patients and Their Families (Hardcover)
This book covers info for all stages of life and types of persons (including men!) The section on risks is great, and the best chapter explains how Osteoporosis is diagnosed -- bone density scans are at last described in a meaningful way along with their interpretation. I found this very useful. There is a big and appropriate focus on prevention & treatment (great info here!) as well as cases presented that make each chapter come alive with real clinical descriptions and solutions. The book is incredibly well written, indexed superbly and contains numerous references. I can't say enough good things about this very informative and well done book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but somewhat outdated..., November 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book has a lot of good information. It was published in 1999 and therefore somewhat out-of-date. New information on this subject is better found in THE COMPLETE BOOK OF BONE HEALTH by Diane L. Schneider, M.D. published in 2011.

It is always good to be informed, but medicine changes regularly. Keep studying, but read my review of Dr. Schneider's book. Ten million people have Osteoporosis. Information is power.
