What a delight it is to know that I can have hardboiled or poached eggs any time I want, with almost no effort, and no supervision. You can put your eggs in the machine when you wake up, go upstairs to shower, and never worry about it, because the machine shuts off by itself when it's done. Hardboiled eggs are done perfectly every time. Moreover, if you want to have hardboiled eggs without the bother of taking off the shell, you can just put four eggs into the poaching tray and fill to the hardboil mark.
The eggs will come out a funny shape, but unless we're making devilled eggs, we don't care. There's only one disadvantage to this machine, and that is that you can't just dump the whole thing into the dishwasher. Sulfer tends to be released from the eggs and stick on the machine and you have to wipe that off regularly by hand. It can get a little dirty. But that's the worst thing I can say about this machine. Simply put, this makes our lives easier for a very modest price. I never thought I needed an egg cooker before, but now that I have one, I'll never go back.

We received an Oster egg cooker as a wedding gift many years ago and used it frequently, especially for poached eggs. When the Teflon wore out, we were unable to find this product on the market. We tried other egg cookers/poachers which were adequate, but we always wanted another Oster. When we found that amazon.com was offering this product, we ordered it. I boils up to 8 eggs and poaches up to 4 eggs. This is a wonderful little appliance that is easy to operate and is easy to clean.

Awesome Product!,
So many people don't know what they're missing! This is a FABULOUS product! I had a Sunbeam egg cooker for over 20 years, which finally died. I searched high and low for the exact same cooker and this product was the closest, well actually the same product but with improvement. I really like the automatic shut off feature. This was very important to me, as I'm not one to stand around to watch eggs cook! I like the see-through lid. If you want to watch, you can tell if the poached eggs are almost done or not. And let me tell you about the poached eggs this cooker makes - YUM! Cooks them perfectly! IF I wanted the poached egg yolks real runny, I could add less water and IF I wanted the poached eggs cooked with totally solid yolk, I could add more water slightly over the fill level. The water fill levels are easy - no measuring cups needed. The only feature I miss is being able to unplug the cord from the unit to store inside, but, oh well!
Again, I love this unit! I even travel with it. I highly recommend it.

Great Egg Poacher.,
This is one of the few speciality cookers that I actually use on a regular basis. It is easy to use, put the eggs in the correct tray, add the appropriate amount of water, and push the red button. It turns itself off when finished. No more guessing as to when to start the timer.
If you like poached eggs, it is a must. It makes great poached eggs. Minor changes in the amount of water in a bottom of the cooker controls the hardness of the poaching. So after a couple of tests, you will figure out exactly the amount of water to add to get them just right. This is my second Oster egg cooker. My first one died after many years of good service. I looked at the other egg cookers and they only cook 2-3 poached eggs at a time. The Oster cooker hold 4 eggs in the poaching tray. Since it holds 4 eggs at a time, the egg compartments in the poaching tray are too small to hold jumbo eggs. Since I never use jumbo eggs, this is not a problem for me. The cooker is also really nice to make a hard boiled eggs. The hard boiled eggs are cooked to perfection. However, it only cooks 7 at a time. For hard boiling a large number of eggs, as needed when dying Easter eggs, a large pot is easier and quicker.

Wonderful, And Then Combustible,

This egg cooker was a true delight for several months, and was used about every other week. It was highly efficient, made eggs perfectly, and was reasonably easy to clean. Its use was as recommended by the manual.
Then, two days ago the house filled with the stench of melting plastic. When it was traced back to the egg cooker, it appeared switched off but was in fact burning into overdrive. The plastic canopy had melted like Dali's clocks, and begun to sag over some hard boiled eggs left from the night before. I unplugged the cooker, and discovered that the canopy had melted into the base and was fastened tight. Not only was it completely ruined, but if this had happened when no one was at home, it might have even burned down the house! In spite of all of this device's very positive qualities, this is clearly a fatal flaw and cannot be recommended. Oster should recall this model and overhaul the design for safety purposes.

Eggsactly What We Needed.,

I may be biased towards the Sunbeam/Oster name, mostly because I have a family history with the company going back decades.
I am not a fan of eggs per se. However, the wife and kids are big fans of eggs. As a matter of fact they would eat eggs with every meal if they could. The problem we faced was that since I don't ever eat eggs, I don't know a thing about cooking them. And my wife is a self admitted 'Non-Cook' when it comes to just about ANYTHING! We began the test run of our new Oster 4716 Egg Cooker with the Hard Boiled eggs. With the easy to follow instructions, not only in the booklet, but actually ON the product too, it was a snap! According to the Mrs. the eggs came out to total perfection. Just soft enough in all the right areas...which I guess is the whole thing. With the soft boiled eggs, there was again perfection. My wife hadn't eaten eggs cooked this way in quite some time, but enjoyed them none the less. The poached eggs were the kids favorite! With a piece or two of toast, the kids called them the best 'dippy eggs ever!' To top the whole experience off, the cook time was relatively short. I don't remember the exact amount of time it took to cook each one, but the wonderful thing about this product is that it is all automatic! When the eggs were done cooking, the light in front went off, and the click at the perfect pitch let the household know their snack/breakfast was ready and waiting! Another awesome thing that Oster does is put easy and delicious recipies in the instructions for some even better meals! Needless to say, I'm highly reccomending this product. For the price, you honestly can't go wrong, especially when it makes your life a whole lot easier!

We are very pleased with the Oster egg cooker. We have had it for approximately one month. It took us a little while to get the proper water level to cook only two soft boiled eggs at a time. Now that we have, it is excellent. Cooking two poached eggs to perfection is very easy. Hard boiled eggs are a snap! We purchased this model because of the automatic shut-off which works just fine. We have found that using filtered water rather than tap water keeps the cooker base cleaner. However, regardless, it is easy to clean and we have used the cream of tartar which takes care of any residual minerals that build up. We would definitely purchase this egg cooker again as a gift for friends or relatives.

Horrible, horrible, horrible design flaw,
This review is from: Oster 4716 Egg Cooker (Kitchen)
If the lid that accompanied this egg cooker was glass (as they used to be) or stainless steel, this might be a handy device. Unfortunately, the lid is plastic. And the lid is in constant contact with the part of the egg cooker that heats the water. The byproduct of this is that the lid will melt. I wish I had read the one-star reviews. They all say the same thing.
Given the design of this, I can't imagine how anyone's plastic lid didn't melt. Perhaps these reviews are combined for an Oster product that's no longer on the market? One with a glass lid? Also, the instructions say that for cooking fewer than 8 eggs, more water may be necessary. But that's all. Cuisinart's egg cooker has a measuring beaker with exact marks showing how much water is necessary for how many eggs, and for what consistency: Hard, Medium, or Soft.

Bought this unit in 11/07 because of the great reviews. Worked just perfectly, then in 1/08 came back after the eggs had cooked and found the plastic top had melted into the cooker. Had to get a screw driver to get the ruined eggs out. Called Customer service. They were great. Sent me another one and asked me to return the defective one. Got the new one and after about 4 weeks same thing happened. Plastic top melted into the base.
They are sending another out, but wow twice in a row. |
