5.0 out of 5 stars Many Uses for the Arepa Maker
I have found that the Arepa Maker can be used for many things besides Arepas. It can be used to make Eggs,Hamburgers,Pancakes, Crab Cakes, Tuna Melt, Salmon Croquettes, Shortcake, Potato Cakes/Hash Browns,Circle Sandwiches - Kids will love to eat! Anything you can image.....

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as traditional arepas...
I find that the arepas made w/the arepa maker come out w/"rubbery" centers, and they take a long time to be done. They toast nicely outside, but somehow the insides don't cook well. I'm wondering if I can find another use for this appliance, maybe for making pancakes? I think I will continue making arepas the traditional way, on a non-stick griddle on the stove.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy little must have., August 12, 2006
This review is from: Oster 4798 Electric Family-Size 6-Cup Arepamaker (Kitchen)
This is great for arepas made from hominy. Add a little cheese to make them tasty, green pepper and onion ok too. This unit allows one to be a little creative. I added a little masa flour to the batter to thicken because the insides of the arepas do maintain moisture because of the sealing halves of the machine. They really seal. Add oil to help crispen the crust. You can cook them most of the way then put into the oven to finish but not necessary. I'm going to try and make salmon croquettes with crumbs on the crust. I will do this by cooking most of the way then finishing in the oven. Uhmm......Hardly can wait. I've read about crab cakes too. Sound good? You'll have to experiment if you want to do different things. I've done corn bread from yellow flour, added peppers and cheddar cheese to the basic batter for corn bread. The batter is wet just fill the bottom half of the machine and the corn bread will rise to meet the upper. Excellent! With the cheddar cheese and peppers.........yeh! Secret to good arepas is using the soaked hominy you mash or ground into the batter. Add water to thin and a little flour to get the batter like dry cooky dough......a little sticky. Just put gobs of the dough the size of a billiard ball. Make sure you added the grated cheese and mixed it in. Great with menudo, chile con carne or gumbo. Have fun!

Only used it one time but they came out perfectly. I did have Harina Pan, the real stuff, but it made life a lot easier to use the Arepamaker as opposed to grilling on the stove. If the appliance holds up and I have no reason to believe it won't, it appears very well made, I will be very happy. Pros, evenly sized nicely browned tasty arepas. Cons, took a long time to heat up, I never did see the yellow heat light turn green for go, next time I will wait and time it and perhaps add to this review. But for a first time test, I can safely say, buy one, you'll like it.

Ok, I vacationed in Venezuela years ago, and had these wonderful corn cake sandwichy things. Arepas. NEVER had them again until I moved to my current home, and my neighbor happens to be from Venezuela!!! She made these for me!!! She also told me about this arepa maker, which I ended up purchasing! I LOVE THIS THING!! Makes perfect arepas without frying.

1.0 out of 5 stars arepas cooker better by hand, March 16, 2009

This review is from: Oster 4798 Electric Family-Size 6-Cup Arepamaker (Kitchen)
I purchased the oster arepas cooker thinking it would be just what I needed, after countless failures and changing receipes to adapt to the cooker I finally did them by hand on a griddle to absolute perfection...the problem I found with the cooker is it was too hard on outside and still raw on inside. The cooker itself sounds like a good idea with premeasured areas but never could get the inside done, they are supposed to be moist but not like clay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Arepas, February 23, 2009
This review is from: Oster 4798 Electric Family-Size 6-Cup Arepamaker (Kitchen)
I love arepas and when I found out an electric arepa maker was available, I ordered one. We have tried all sorts of recipes but I used my wife's recipe which the family loves and although not traditional ( she uses egg and baking powder ) we get the results of a crispy outside and a moist inside which this machine cooks well

We split the arepas open and use our favorite fillings- anything one can fill an english muffin or a sandwich with and eat them while the arepa are warm. Oh yes, try making pizza arepas, fill with more shredded mozarella, pizza sauce, Italian seasoning etc or try dessert arepas splitting and filling with a mango or pineapple jam, sliced fresh pineapple etc.

I do find these freeze well and then reheat in a 350F until well heated

Joan's Arepas

2 cups Masa Harina Flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 eggs
1 tsp salt
1 tsp garlic powder
optional: 1 tsp sugar or a bit more for dessert arepas
some black pepper
approx 2 cups of boiling water
1/2 cup shredded mozarella cheese

Combine all the dry ingredients and fork mix in the eggs. Blend in enough water with a fork so a dough forms. The consistency should be like a playdough, soft pliable but not sticky, so one may have to sprinkle either more water or masaharina to get to the right texture, Then knead in the shredded chesse by hand until well incorporated. Divide dough into 6 or 7 pieces, shape by forming with cupped palms, kinda of patting, gently slapping back and forth to make a smooth round form.

Place in the arepa machine and cook 7 to 10 minutes or until golden.

Carefully cut in half with a sharp serated knife and fill as desired

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The device made for Venezuelan..., August 29, 2007

It is great when you can find products like this here in Amazon to offer that product to your home in USA. This brand is the best for Arepas Makers ever. They developed this product for the Venezuela market but now is time to offer all the choices here in USA and Europe.

We are waiting for more options like 2 and 4 cup, black and white color options which are very popular for the customers there in Venezuela and people from Mexican, Colombian and others Latinos are waiting for those Osters choices here in USA and Europe. Whose do not like a very good Arepa?

Very well made and easy to clean. So much nicer than the traditional 4 at-a-time arepa maker.
