I'm giving this convection/toaster 5 stars based on it's performance at it's price range and class. You can spend 3-4 times as much on a professional countertop convection oven like the Franklin convection oven (Amazon ASIN: B000BQ0CP6) for $250 and get a better product. However, I've used both and by comparison I think you really get your money's worth with this product.

We've had ours for about a month now and use it daily. The results are amazing. I've made numerous frozen pizzas, a meatloaf, cookies, brownies, loads of toast and lots of french fries among other things. The oven performed quite well in all cases. There is definitely a little bit of a learning curve and I goofed up a few things before I figured out how to use it. I would definitely recommmend reading the directions and following many of the recommendations for rack and food placement. That is actually very important.

Some examples of "tweaks" are as follows: With brownies you need a lower temperature than the box states when using convection and you might want to use a combination of convection and regular baking for cakes and browines.

With chocolate chip cookies you want to go with straight convection heat and depending on the mix you use you'll need to tweak the cycle. Cookies bake in much less time but you can get abolutely perfect and uniformly colored cookies! No more burnt bottoms! For example Ghiardelli dry cookie mix from the box cooks a little differently than the frozen dough that comes in a chub, even though the baking instructions on the packages are about the same. As you might expect you can only make about 6 average cookies, or biscuits at a time.

The convection bake is excellent for making all kinds of frozen french fries that come out perfect every time. Spring rolls come out great. The oven has several pre-programed cycles, a light, a timer, and every cycle offers the opportunity to tweak the temperature and/or time. There is a nice light inside the unit that makes it easy to check food.

Other notes: When making toast be sure to follow the directions for setting the rack.

Major Plusses:

1. Holds a very consistent temperature
2. Does a very good job on many types of food - better than a conventional oven
3. Produces very uniformly cooked foods
4. Cooks many foods in less time
5. Bottom tray is easy to remove and clean
6. Easy to use

A few drawbacks:

1. It does not quite fit most 9 x 13 pans, but will cook 12 inch pizzas.
2. It does get hot and you need to be careful how you open it and where you put your hands.
3. It only comes with one shelf. I would like two shelves for making cookies.
4. There is a bit of a "learning curve" if you're not used to convection
5. The oven operated at a slightly higher temperature than what my oven thermometer reads, but it holds at one, even temperature very well and it was consistently about the same difference at all ranges from 300 to 450. I'm honestly not sure which temperature was more correct, the oven's or my thermometer's. Based on my baking, the oven may be running a tad hotter than it says but it's easy to adjust. I would recommend checking your oven, as they may differ.

I wanted a toaster oven which could toast things you can't put in a toaster (such as bread with cheese on top) as well as to have an alternative to using my large oven when cooking small portions. It also had to have the convection (fan) feature, which I find really helps to cook food faster and more evenly.

The functionality is all there: it's spacious and it toasts, bakes, convection bakes, and broils (but I use my main oven for broiling as I find it too messy to use a toaster oven). It even has a little light inside so you can check on the food. And the timer also works as a clock. It's a great value.

The downside, and my only reason for not giving this oven 5 stars, is that the outside gets extremely hot, especially the glass door. If you grasp the handle from the top (over-handed), your knuckles get burned by the top lip of the door - which is not insulated. When I spoke with a rep from Oster (kudos for having a toll-free number and a wait time of only 2 minutes), he confirmed that that is the way it is made and there is no solution other than returning it.

If you don't have children who may touch the glass door or try to open it, and you can remember to always open it under-handed, this is a very nice oven.

First let me say that I decided on this oven because I refuse to spend a lot on another toaster oven. They don't live a long time (except for the Cuisinart), and so why spend top dollar? I love this oven. I also purchased it at Costco ($60.00). It was replacing my old, would never buy again Delonghi Toaster Oven, and a Panasonic Infrared Toaster Oven that went right back to Amazon after 3 days. The only thing that compares is the Cuisinart convection toaster oven that I had. It was THE PERFECT TOASTER OVEN, but a little too small for our needs. If you don't need a big oven, don't mess with anything else and get the Cuisinart!

Yes, it takes eons to make toast in this baby. (Way more than 6 minutes. Most often between 8-11 minutes!) It's a big oven. But, unlike the other reviewer, my toast, no matter what kind of bread, turns out perfectly golden like my bread was sitting out in St. Tropez. The rack must be in the center position and shaped like a "U" when looking at it from the front for the perfect slice. It also can handle nearly 6 full english muffins at one time. (Great for big families.) I have also found that it will toast things one right after another without getting increasingly browner with each batch. (But it does get faster, with each successive batch.)

I would like having the unit interior 1/2" larger from side to side. It will nearly fit a 9"x13" pan, I mean by less than 1/3"!...which would be great in summer to almost never use my big oven. So, I'm not sure why the manufacturer wouldn't have gone the extra 1/2". I mean, it's already a huge oven...might as well go for it. If you are a small family, or have a super small kitchen, this oven might not be for you. I have a small kitchen, but a family that likes to eat, so this oven, while taking a lot of space, does a lot of work for us, and is worth it.

The bell when toast is done, is not that loud. So, if you are in another part of the house doing something, you might not hear it.

I have made toast, 12" pizza, baked potatoes, fries and chicken strips, muffins, cookies, brownies, roasted chicken, and more in this oven. They all came out beautiful.

I don't like that I can't tell when it is up to temperature for baking, so I have an instant read thermometer to tell me when it is ready. (And yes, it takes forever to get up to temp.) My oven temp is lower than what it reads on the digital touch screen, but it has not adversely affected my baking.

So, with those caveats, I still love this toaster oven. I can't recommend it for everyone, but if you identify with my likes and dislikes in this review, you will like this machine.

I purchased this convection toaster oven at costco's for $60.00. I've used it to make choc chip cookies and egg rolls so far. I've only had it a few days. It cooked everything perfect. The cookies normally bake 20 min, but using the convection bake, it took 12 mins. I am very, very pleased so far and can't wait to try other things. Perfect for my son to use. No longer heating big oven for small portions. Definitely recommend at any price. Also, good free oster Customer service for any questions you may have.

We were actually quite happy with this unit, until it caught fire one day. It had been set on convection for about a fifteen minute 350 degree attempt to bake some cookies, and about ten minutes in, something within the wiring compartment burst into flames. Luckily, I was in the kitchen at the time and saw the flames coming through the grating. It was not an area that would've gotten wet in any way--it wasn't even on a counter near the sink. Furthermore, the wiring area is separated from the baking compartment, so there wasn't any way food could've spattered over there--it was clearly a defect in the product. I unplugged the unit, picked it up with pot holders and put it out on the patio--it burned itself out after about a half hour. At any rate, I thought I should pass this info on. It's one thing to have an appliance bite the dust after six months--it's another to buy one that could set your house on fire. I won't buy another Oster product.

We are returning this unit, after burning our fingers on the door and realizing our kids (and perhaps their mother) were just too young to navigate the front door handle design. While the handle stays cool, the pretty chrome material on the door just behind the handle gets extremely hot, and it is too easy to touch it by mistake with the back of your fingers while grasping the handle. (When the oven wasn't plugged in, we tried asking our daughters to grasp onto the handle and open it, and those little fingers pushed right against the door surface -- if it had been plugged in and hot, they would have been burned.)

Instead, we bought the comparably equipped Cuisinart 350PC (same as the TOB 175BC). In comparison, the Oster is much larger, thus requires more counter space and takes a lot longer to heat up. The Cuisinart takes about 3 minutes to make six pieces of toast, whereas it takes the Oster about 6 minutes. The Cuisinart makes the toast crunchy on the outside yet moist inside, whereas the bread toasted in the Oster came out too dry (but not browned on the outside), more like cardboard. This was probably due to the slow heat-up time. (Perhaps a fix would involve turning the oven on first, waiting 3-4 minutes, then putting in the bread -- if you have the time & inclination....)

Other details: this oven also has dehydrate and defrost functions (heating at very low temperatures), comes with two pans (one for baking, one for broiling with a tiny broiling rack) and one main shelf-rack. There is a crumb tray you can slide out the front for cleaning, a nice feature (the Cuisinart's is in the back, which makes it awkward to clean). Unlike as noted in another review, there IS a clock, an oven light you can turn on whenever you choose (i wish the Cuisinart had this), and the chrome/stainless steel outer is attractive, albeit dangerous.

In sum, if you need a counter-top convection oven, as opposed to a toaster, this one is a good value, is attractive, and has a large capacity for a counter-top oven. Also, i have had good experiences with Oster small appliances. (The basic Oster blender I bought for $30 some 14 years ago still works perfectly.) However, if you primarily want to toast bread, or you have young children, and/or you are somewhat prone to burning your own fingers, i'd look elsewhere. [I would have knocked off a star or two after the burn experience, but Amazon doesn't permit that.]

I did a lot of research online before finally buying this toaster oven at Bed, Bath & Beyond. It was $89.99 but I paid about $40 for it using the 20% off mail coupon and a $30 gift card, so got a really great deal on a quality machine. It's a nice compact size compared to larger toaster ovens, yet it accomplishes the same tasks. Being digital, you don't have to worry about knobs breaking or melting, like I've read in other toaster oven reviews. It's only 17" wide and has 12" depth for pizzas and other roomy items, so it fits nicely in a corner on my countertop - and I have a small to average-sized kitchen so I don't have much counter space to spare.

It has two racks inside and any size of frozen pizzas along with most of my casserole dishes fit inside with no problem. I did buy a set of toaster oven pans for cookies & muffins and a smaller pizza pan too, which also work great inside. If the oven is preheated, our toast only takes three minutes to toast on the golden brown setting; or toasting on a cookie sheet quickens toasting time and makes crumb clean up a breeze. The toast also comes out less dry than pop-up toasters. It has a nice beeping feature to let you know when it's preheated to the temperature you want and it's super-fast to preheat, only two minutes! Also when your timer is up, it beeps three series of short successive beeps which can be heard the same as a microwave timer.

This toaster oven is actually similar to a microwave oven but with all the great oven features inside. The stainless steel exterior and body design are very visually appealing, the oven itself functions great and it's also a convenient size for limited countertop space. The only small complaint I have is that the digital cooking timer isn't actually a clock also, so it sits on "000" when you're not using the oven, and it always looks like a clock that hasn't been set. But that's just a personal pet peeve of mine. For our first toaster oven I'd give this 5 stars overall!

**EDIT**I checked my model number and it is actually #6248, so that explains why I don't have the clock feature, otherwise everything else is the same. Also as mentioned in numerous other reviews, you have to use extra caution because of how hot the outside gets, (as with any toaster oven). I'm always extra careful yet last week I was reaching behind it after cooking something, and I got a 4 inch long burn on my upper arm when it touched the the back corner. So be careful at all times!

I've owned this oven for only one day, but I have already made good use of it. My pork chops and vegetables were very tender, especially considering the short amount of time it took for them to get done. My banana bread cooked in an amazingly short amount of time, cooked evenly, and rose the highest that my banana bread has ever risen--very fluffy. The oven does not take up as much counter space as I had feared it would, and it is more conveniently located than my conventional oven. Because my dishes are almost at eye level when they bake, it is more difficult to forget about them than it is when they are in a conventional oven underneath a rangetop.
My only regrets are that there is a small space between the sides of the door and the oven out of which heat escapes and that with only a bit more space inside the oven, 9"X13" pans would fit there. Otherwise, I am perfectly happy with the product thus far. Time will tell. . .

Time has told. My original review was written in January of 2008. It is now May, and I have yet to use my conventional oven even once since buying my Oster convection toaster oven! As a matter of fact, I like it so much that I have now bought a second one!

I hate giving negative reviews, but this is one thing I have to rant about. I've had this "toaster" oven for seven months now, and I've finally give up and am now searching for something more akin to the old "fire hazard" model I had a decade ago. The quartz bar technology in this model takes forever to heat up, and in the case of toasting, never truly toasts-- it just warms the item up, never making it truly crispy or golden brown (unless you put it in for multiple cycles, in which case, it dehydrates your item completely and *still* doesn't make it any browner). As a mini-oven, it does work, and the convection is nice, but be prepared for insanely long preheat times.

Big and stylish with neat digital controls, it heats up well and cooks food evenly but is painfully SLOW. If you want toast in a hurry look elsewhere. Still, for $59 at Costco it's a bargain.
