It is so unfortunate that we are all victims of the quality issues that come with globalization. I have read the complaints about uneven toasting. And they are correct. It does toast unevenly, that is due to poor quality management at the factory where the Chinese slave labors are working. But do not fear!! You can actually fix this problem yourself with some very careful operations using a very thin straight edge screw driver or an exacto-knife!! What happens is the elements need to be separated slightly from the metal sides in order to heat. You will notice the portions of element wires that are in direct contact with the sides do not light up when you power your toaster (push the knob down) What needs to be done is this: Unplug the toaster, note which elements did not have separation from the metal side plates, gently pry that portion away from the side wall giving it just a very small gap. Do this to all portions of the element wires that are not gapped away from the side walls, and then re-plug the toaster and watch the elements glow!!! It then will toast your breads, bagels, beagles or whatever you want to throw in there. It is one of the only toasters that can toast homemade bread. So I was willing to give it a go and purchased and modified mine. Works great now. They should pay me to fix em all, but I don't want to live in a slave camp to do it.......UPDATE 9-28-12 still works, just letting you know. its been two years now.

I bought this toaster about 6 months ago from Amazon without reading the reviews. Shortly before it got here I noticed the review section and read all the horrible reviews for this toaster and became really concerned that the toaster wouldn't work properly. It came about six months ago, I've used it pretty much every day since then and it works just fine. No weird, uneven toast. No sticky handle. None of the scary stuff in the other reviews. Its pretty, and it works. Its a toaster.

I bought this toaster with high expectations since it has two long, wide slots big enough for four slices of bread, a beautiful brushed steel exterior, and a nice array of features such as a bagel toaster, frozen bread setting, lift for painless removal of bread, and cancel buttons. (The bagel setting "adjusts for the thickness of the bread" and it not a one-sided toasting feature.) The Oster would have been perfect for my needs - if only it toasted well.

When I first got it, I plopped a couple of frozen bagels into it - and within minutes I had to cancel the process when smoke rose from the toaster. I tried with new bagels, at a much lower setting. I had to pop up the bagels again before I set off the smoke detectors. I gave up when the bagels were still burning at 2 1/3 out of 6. Plus, the bagels didn't go all the way into the slots; the top inch wasn't even toasted despite the charred remainder. At that point, I figured it wasn't worth trying more, especially since continued use would mean that I was stuck with it. I packed it up and returned it.

A peek inside the toaster showed that not all the toasting wires turned red during toasting (whether they worked or not seemed random), which may explain why some people complain of uneven browning. The Oster is truly one of the best looking toasters on the market. The controls actually feel solid, and the blue light that illuminates to show which features are working is helpful. It's a shame that it cannot do its job. Is it really so difficult to make a good, dependable toaster?

I eventually bought the T-Fal Avante Deluxe, a better choice for me, although it, too, has its drawbacks.

A very simple and attractive toaster to match the red theme in our kitchen.

Pluses: Fits wide slices or bagels easily, removable crumb tray, sensible functions

Minus: Although the width is great, the length of the toaster slots is fairly short, so when I buy the nice European style bread that doesn't know about the small, square American dimensions I have to cut each slice in half.

This toaster works as expected, but isn't quite as long as needed to toast four slices of slightly larger than normal bread. It works to do that if you have standard sandwich bread, but if you have something just a bit wider, you're back to being able to do only two at a time. However, since it is long, you can toast breads that wouldn't fit in a regular toaster at all.

I love the lift lever so if you have smaller pieces, you can still get them out. There are some minor features they could add, but then the price point wouldn't be so nice.

The Amazon reviews are mixed, and for good reason. Mine arrived with a couple small scratches in the otherwise very cool candy-apple red surface. Oh well. But the really bad news was yet to come. After doing the suggested burn-in (one cycle with no bread - and yep, there really is a noxious odor from that), I set the darkness control to about 4.5 (ranges from 1 to 7). Burnt, completely burnt. So I set it down to 3.5. Burnt again. 2.5 - barely brown. 3 - burnt. And, as other reviews note, it doesn't toast evenly on both sides. One reviewer thought that was great; I think it sucks. I guess Oster is owned by Sunbeam, and who knows who owns them, but these products that are thrown together in China or elsewhere where they pay $.02/hr for labor can hardly be expected to be reliable, can they? Aint the global economy f'in' wonderful?!
