Cheap, weak blender,

I just bought this blender last week and have made about 5 smoothies with it. For smoothies, I use frozen fruit, protein powder and rice milk. I let the frozen fruit sit in the rice milk for 5 minutes to start thawing out the fruit. Still, this POS blender cannot chop the fruit. The motor revs and revs and you can smell the little motor toiling away. Only the fruit at the very very bottom gets blended. I have to stop and stir and blend again. I wonder how long this motor will last as it strain to the verge of overheating.
I thought that $300 for a high quality blender was too much. I thought that if this one wore out and broke after a year, I would just buy another. That was a good theory provided that the blender could easily make a smoothie. I guess this would be good for soups but I am not even going to go there. I am going to return this ASAP. If you do a lot of cooking or expect to blend ice or frozen fruit, keep looking for another blender. Trust me.

Great for smoothies,

Great blender. I used to make smoothies with it all the time until we moved to France and had to sell it (volt converter costs as much as the blender itself...) Chops frozen fruit real well too. Try plain yoghurt + frozen raspberries + canned peaches + ice cubes + honey for a healthy but tasty snack!

I see this blender is hit or miss based on others' reviews. However, I have to give it 5 stars. This blender replaced a more expensive Black & Decker blender that gave up the ghost after no more than a year or two. This Osterizer I've been using for several years, and quite frequently. For example, I'm back on a smoothie kick now, so for the past few months each morning in goes a cup or more of frozen fruit, the protein, milk, orange. No complaints from this, no bad smells or bad sounds.Occasionally I've been blending a huge amount of material and held down the "pulse" button except for many seconds at a time. I'm careful with this. I assume that if I did it for too long under load that lovely smell of stressed motor would pop up, but that's really using it beyond its design. This isn't a very high watt blender and if you need to blend up a ton of material and or a huge amount of frozen fruit maybe you'll want better, but I've really had no complaints at all. If it died today I'd buy another.

I bought this at Target to replace my other Oster blender which lasted a year before the motor fried up. I sauteed veggies and chopped liver in red wine for pate. The food that went into the blender was actually softer than the average fruit and ice for a smoothie.
This was my FIRST time using the blender since I purchased it last week. Halfway through pureeing the soft veggie and chopped liver (the liver was crumbled and smaller than sesame seeds), the motor started smoking. Then, the base lit up like a lightning storm and it died. I had to mix softened ghee (clarified butter) which was almost liquid with a wooden spoon in a bowl to complete my pate. Had I been blending ice or hard veggies such as raw celery or carrots, I could understand (although the manual claims that the blender can grind nuts without a problem)... but cooked, soft veggies with a bit of liquid? Come on!!! Totally NOT WORTH my money. I am going to return the blender tomorrow and look for a better one.

I am a big smoothie person, I go through blenders like crazy and this one was no exception. However, I have a serious issue with this blender. SERIOUS issue. Ice. Ice and this blender are like oil and water. I would put ice into a ziplock bag, wrap a towel around the bag, and send my husband with the ice and a hammer into the basement to smash it on the concrete floor. Then, I would take the smashed ice from the badly badgered zip lock bag and put it in the blender to make smoothies. I think the day this blender died was quite possibly the best day of my husband's life; right up there with the birth of our daughter. It would do fine on fruit and ice cream and other delicious drinks that you would make in a blender, but ice for smoothies just did not happen.

This blender is very light, and travels all over the counter while running. You have to hold it still! The blades are designed for ice-crushing only, and don't do a good job on thick sauces. The motor is also very noisy and overheats quickly.

I bought this because it was less expensive to buy the whole blender than a replacement jar and blades. Works good and I'm using it instead of my old blender. The base is somewhat lightweight, but for smoothies it's been working great. I also like the shape of the jar, though it could be a bit thicker plastic. All-in-all, $14.99 - can't beat it.
