5.0 out of 5 stars What a great product! Will save me time and strain on my hand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cork splitter, messy opener
I had high expectations for this product after using Rabbits for years, which open bottles flawlessly. Purchased at Costco locally for several dollars less than Amazon. This product inevitably either splits corks or drills the corks so deep that it spits cork out the other end into the wine. UPDATE 6/16/2009

I must say, while the product works as indicated in the video, about a month ago, I heard a loud "crack", and the corkscrew simply broke off inside the unit. I took the unit apart to see if I could do a quick repair and there was no easy way to do that.
Based on that shoddy construction, and it only lasting less than a year, I can't really fully endorse this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvel of low tech, April 12, 2007
As a person who loathes cheap, clutter, infomercial widgets I bought this out or sheer curiosity imagining it would be returned the same day. This opener is large, requires an electric plug and takes up counter space. But to my surprise it works amazingly well. There is a foil cutter that is stored in the base. The screw enters cleanly and seems to eliminate broken and shredded corks which can be frustrating. Hold the button again and the cork emerges from the device and drops out. I always liked my sturdy and simple stainless steel opener. But this turned out to be a keeper. It's design is contemporary and clean, although it looks like it should do something more profound than just pull a cork. It's also a conversation piece provoking smiles from guests. A pleasant surprise, highly recommended and especially so for a person who lacks hand or wrist strength.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cork splitter, messy opener, May 5, 2007

I had high expectations for this product after using Rabbits for years, which open bottles flawlessly. Purchased at Costco locally for several dollars less than Amazon. This product inevitably either splits corks or drills the corks so deep that it spits cork out the other end into the wine. If you don't position the worm directly in the center of the bottle, which is hard to do (since it is retracted inside the opener), it will surely split the cork and then you've spoiled the bottle. I've since stopped using it because of these reasons.

This product makes opening a bottle of wine effortless. Any wine drinker with Arthritis or Carpal tunnel (like me) should own this. You do need one hand on the bottle and one on the opener to keep them from rotating, then just hold the rocker switch down. It has a sleek look and fits in on your bar or counter. A great gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars SO Great!!, June 15, 2006

Oh, how I love this product!!! I received it as a gift, so I didn't really have any expectations when I opened it to try it out...but OMG!!! If you open wine often (as I do) there's no way you can't find the Oster to be AMAZING!!! It really does open bottles-just hit the "up" arrow and it takes the corks right out....in like, 30 seconds, no less! Then, hit the down arrow to make it give the cork right back to you-even quicker! With NO damage-you can place it right back to stopper the open bottle.
To be honest, I can't believe this only costs $20-it is amazing and I love love LOVE it-and you will too!!

I have been trying to find a corkscrew that my wife will use with enthusiasm for about 15 years. Up until this one, they have all been "too hard" and I have to end up opening her wine. She is now perfectly happy to open a bottle of wine by herself, and that's all I can ask. It's a rather large device for what it does, but its kind of cool looking, so it makes up for its size.

A friend gave me one of these just like it about a year ago, and I love it. No fuss, no muss, easy out for the cork from the bottle, then the opener quickly discharges the cork. Nothing could be simpler or more reliable. I then bought another identical one (this one) for a cousin's birthday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best thing to happen to wine lovers, October 11, 2007

At first, I thought...this is too easy...what's the catch? The only catch is the opener "catching" your cork. No more struggling, broken corks, cork in your wine...nothing. This puts those expensive "rabbit corkscrews" to shame. It's easy, easy to store and recharge. Even if you only open bottles once in a while, you owe it to yourself to never pull a muscle doing so ever again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, May 6, 2009
I got the Oster Wine opener as a Christmas gift. I'm a little leery of electronics taking the place of perfectly useful manual tools. I've used a "waiter's corkscrew" for years, and I'm quite adept at using it. I also found the Oster's design a little faux-modern, like it was trying too hard. So I was surprised at how easily it opened my wine bottle. It's designed to completely pull the cork when pressing the down-arrow button, and then stop (I've read other negative reviews where it seemed like the reviewer reversed the screw direction once the corkscrew was completely inserted, and the cork, of course, never left the bottle). It surprised me that by simply pressing the up-arrow button it neatly, if a little slowly, ejected the cork from the device. It has worked on every kind of cork I tried - American cork, European cork, or synthetic cork.

Why only 4-stars? Like a number of reviewers, I noticed that the Oster Wine opener started getting weaker after about three months. I examined the device, and noticed that its charging light (a translucent half-globe on the top) was not lit when I placed it in the charger. I checked the base of the device and, sure enough, one of the contact points was completely covered with black. I scraped the carbon off and applied a little WD-40 with a cotton swab; it has charged perfectly ever since.

I should note that this is NOT a device for people with arthritis. You need a firm grip on the bottle, or the Oster just makes the bottle spin. If you have arthritic pain when gripping, or have a weak grip, this device is probably not for you.
