4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for entry level dehydrating
We've had this one for a few weeks and so far so good. We are just getting into the dehydrating thing and are enjoying it so far. This unit hasn't given us any problems so far. We would like to have a screen for the trays so will probably upgrade soon (small items like corn or peas will simply fall through the tray grill), but as a starter unit this one has been good;...

1.0 out of 5 stars It works...
If you are looking for a dehydrator to use just a couple time a year, then this one would be great. It is cheap and it gets the job done. I, personally, should have spent the extra $20 to get a Nesco. This one is VERY LOUD when running. Also, the slots in the trays are quite large. So far most every thing I have chopped up has fallen through the trays while drying...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great But Fan Shuts Off, February 1, 2010

I love this dehydrator; we actually bought two of them to keep up with the demand for crispy apple chips. Today the oldest one (was Christmas gift) started shutting off by itself, that is the fan stopped running. The older one which is a couple weeks old started last week to shut off. My husband returned it and got a replacement. I set it up this morning and the fan shut off within and hour after I started it. I have seen one other query regarding the fans shutting off. I would consider this a perfect appliance for the money if only I could find out how to fix the fan issue.
We tried using different electrical outlets but it didn't make any difference.

1.0 out of 5 stars Walk away from the Oster!, August 5, 2011

This review is from: Oster FPSTDH0101 4-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator, White (Kitchen)
Okay, I've been in your shoes. You are stopping by Amazon to read reviews before heading off to the local grocery super-store. The Oster dehydrator has terrible reviews online, but it happens to be the only model the super-store carries. You are so excited to try dehydrating your summer veggies that you want to chance it. After all, only a dozen people gave it a bad rating, surely they only had bad eggs. If a company is selling a product, surely it went through testing!

Stop right there. Don't do it. Learn from my mistake and save yourself time, energy, and hard earned cash.

Upon arriving home from the super-store, I excitedly took my new dehydrating friend out of its box. This next part is my fault- I should have tested the unit before slicing my veggies, but I did not. I happily arranged my zucchini on the trays, set the machine on the counter, and plugged it in. The light turned on, but everything was oddly quiet. Just like in the reviews online, the fan did not operate. Undeterred, I called Oster customer service. The helpful representative told me that the fan makes a "very noticeable" noise when functioning. The silence meant nothing at all was happening. She advised that I return it to the store.

Next, I cleaned and repackaged the product. Thankfully I still had my receipt and made my return. The next day, I went to another store and picked up a different brand- Nesco. The Nesco was similar in price, but had more features. It has an adjustable temperature and the heating unit is on top, making it easier to maintain and clean. The Nesco is quiet and efficient. Most importantly, it works.

Walk away from the Oster. Trust the reviewers online and buy another model. I wasted was lured in by false hopes and advertising, but it's not too late to save yourself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Weird Fan Issues, August 27, 2010
This review is from: Oster FPSTDH0101 4-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator, White (Kitchen)
When I first got the unit the fan would run on low speed and shut off and turn back on so it would take 3 days to dry jerky. Then all of a sudden I left it plugged in overnight and the fan ran all night and the air comming out is like a hair dryer so it dries jerky in a few hours. So obviously the batch of jerky that was left in it that night was dried to a crisp and ruined. Now that I have learned to monitor it it seems to working good but I am not sure if this is the proper way for it to run or not.

We would like to have a screen for the trays so will probably upgrade soon (small items like corn or peas will simply fall through the tray grill), but as a starter unit this one has been good; we've already learned alot from using it. For the cost it was definitely worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Dehydrator, November 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oster FPSTDH0101 4-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator, White (Kitchen)
I was looking for a product that was quick to dehydrate, and most important easy to clean. Have used several other dehydrators and found them quite difficult to clean. I grow my own herbs and make my own beef jerky. WOW, this baby is a treat. Works great and quicker than expected and clean up is a breeze. Have already recommended to several others and will continue to do so.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Piece Of Junk - Stopped Working First Time, November 6, 2011

Sometimes being the eternal optimist really bites you in the butt. I read all the reviews, and they all said the same: quickly breaks if it works at all. I should have listened.

This was the only food dehydrator our Walmarts carry. They used to carry Nesco, but not anymore. I bought this one, hoping that by now all the kinks would be worked out. They're not. I put in a couple pounds of beef for jerky and turned it on. Everything ran ok for at least the first couple of hours. The fan was running nice and loud (and I do mean loud), and the temperature was good and hot. I left it for a little while to do some shopping, and when I came home, the fan had shut off, and the temperature wasn't as hot. I turned it off then back on, and the fan started again, but at this point, I do not trust it. It is going back to the store from whence it came.

1.0 out of 5 stars Same problem everyone else had, September 24, 2011
This review is from: Oster FPSTDH0101 4-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator, White (Kitchen)
Just as everyone else said, it just stopped working. I turned it one twice to test it and it worked, then chopped up some bananas to give it a go, and i turned it on and nothing happened... didn't even get to use it. Spend the extra $20 on a nesco, that's what i'm going to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets the job done, August 21, 2011
This review is from: Oster FPSTDH0101 4-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator, White (Kitchen)

I've only used mine a couple times, but haven't had any problems so far. I use it for drying wild mushrooms. It is a little noisy, but I'm happy with it overall. Inexpensive and effective.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oster 4-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator, August 12, 2011
This review is from: Oster FPSTDH0101 4-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator, White (Kitchen)
I prepared the food for drying, arranged it on the trays, plugged it in, and the fan worked for about a minute and then did not blow. So I went online and learned that the Oster 4 tray dehydrator is always junk. Save your time and don't get this product...not to mention throwing 40$ out the window.
