5.0 out of 5 stars we use it daily
since we first received this blender, we've been using it pretty much every single day to make smoothies. thus far, no issues yet, and it seems quite powerful and sleek all in one pkg. not to mention it has a real glass container and everything's dishwasher safe too. recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great blender at a bargain..., May 4, 2010
This review is from: Oster 6847 Metallic Silver 5-Cup 12-Speed Blender
I bought this 12-speed Oster to replace the no-name "smoothie maker" I'd been using previously. That machine was often unable to make short work of frozen fruit and ice cubes. I used it infrequently because of its poor performance and eventually gave up and threw it away. When I decided I didn't want to live smoothie-free, I knew that I had to find another blender. I wanted one that could whip ice and frozen fruit (along with various and sundry liquids and protein powders) into a smooth drink. I knew I didn't want to pay hundreds of dollars for the privilege. Enter the Oster 12-speed blender.

I have to admit I was actually suspicious of this blender's quality BECAUSE of it's reasonable cost. The other blenders I was researching cost upwards of $100.00. I bought it anyway and began blending away. It whipped my protein powder and skim milk into a thick, frothy shake. I changed the setting to the highest- "ice crush" and with some trepidation, dropped in several ice cubes in quick succession. The motor and blades didn't hesitate. They chopped up the ice and whipped it into smoothie nirvana. I was thrilled to find that there were no annoying little chunks of ice left as I poured my drink out of the generous 12-cup (more room for your drink to blend) pitcher. I added fresh and frozen fruit and they were blended right in.

I can't say that this blender does other things equally as well because I actually only use it to make drinks. However, I use it every day in what's probably the most taxing way one could use a blender (chopping ice, blending fruit) and it shows no signs of wear. It blends as well today as the first time I used it, without changing tone, smoking, grinding, etc. It IS very loud- but I don't mind. I don't expect silence from something that's supposed to crush ice.

The only problem I've ever had with this blender- and it's a minor one- is that the buttons are very touchy if they aren't depressed completely. I used my blender to make a smoothie for lunch one day and then went back to work. I returned home at roughly six pm to my blender whirring away at top speed. I'd left it plugged in and thought perhaps a power surge had caused it to start up. Resolving to unplug it when not in use in the future, I shrugged it off until it happened again when I was right next to it, and had just finished using it. I'd made my drink and then not pressed the "off" button in firmly enough- it popped out on it's own and the blender started up again.

Since then I've been careful to make sure the blender is unplugged and the "off" button is down all the way and haven't had a problem. On the other hand, I thought that having it running for hours unattended might have worn the motor down (since it's normally used for less than 10 seconds at a time)but it still performs like new. I don't expect this blender to wear out in the foreseeable future, but if it does, I would buy the same one again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Base cap on this blender will break after limited use!, April 29, 2010
This review is from: Oster 6847 Metallic Silver 5-Cup 12-Speed Blender
Buyer beware, the base cap on this blender will start to crack with limited use. The problem is they use such thin cheap plastic for the base cap and the glass jar is so heavy that the base cap will begin to crack with very little use (screwing it on and off to wash, blending, and placing it down on your counter) making the entire unit an earth contaminating piece of junk. Don't waste your money on this thing unless you can get your hands on a few replacement base caps, otherwise buy something else, preferably a blender without this type of design.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware the base cap and warranty, October 24, 2009
This review is from: Oster 6847 Metallic Silver 5-Cup 12-Speed Blender
Lesson: Check the sturdiness of the plastic caps of your blender before purchase.
After 6 months of sporadic use, the base cap to this blender cracked slightly. After 8 months, it's completely in pieces. Now I'm no muscle man and I wash all the parts by hand, so it's more than a little disappointing when the cap cracks and a replacement is not covered under their 1-year warranty and I have to fork over $5-10 to buy the part.

It was a good blender for juices (not so good for more viscous stuff) and pretty easy to clean. I especially liked that the jar was made of glass instead of plastic. But no more Oster brand for me after this.

4.0 out of 5 stars great product, September 20, 2010
This review is from: Oster 6847 Metallic Silver 5-Cup 12-Speed Blender
My magic bullet broke after 3 yrs of moderate use, been searched for a replacement. I want it as convenient as magic bullet, but with glass jar so I can blend hot soup. Since my Magic Bullet died because of the plastic rotor axle part melt, I especially pay attention to the rotor axle of all blenders. Then Oster blender caught my attention by the it's metal axle and replaceable accessories. And luckily, I found this on sale at Target, so I went to local store to take a look. I couldn't believe most blenders' axles are plastic (like Ninja master prep ), even the name brand. Hello, plastic melt at high temp., what were the engineers thinking? guess they want to make the blenders disposable. This is the only metal axle within reasonable price.

Product trials:
Ice crush:
I tried coffee smoothie first two rounds. it crushed ice like magic (my 11 cup food processor couldn't do this, don't even mention Magic Bullet).

Coffee grind:
then, I wanted to grind coffee, but the 5 cup jar seemed too big. Took out empty canning jar, it amazingly fit the blender cap. it's just like the size of Magic bullet. Coffee ground medium fine, perfect for espresso machine.

Chopping spice:
And I tried to chop ginger in the canning jar, worked fine too.

So happy with the purchase, been playing with it all night. The brushed nickel matched my stainless appliances perfectly.

The only thing I am not so satisfied is the old school buttons.

Check out my uploaded customer image with the canning jar.

I have been searching for an affordable blender with a glass jar for quite some time now. I bought this one a few weeks ago, and I've been blending things like crazy. The things I love about it are the stainless steel color that matches my appliances, the powerful blending capabilites, the jar is glass not plastic and a good amount of blending options (not just pulse and off like the other cheap blenders!). It hasn't let me down yet, i am fully satisfied with this and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Man, this blender is a great little bargain! Seems to be very well-made, for $30 at Target, I feel like it was an excellent choice. We'll see if she stands up to the test of time, but so far (3 months) going strong...

1/2012 Still going strong! I make everything from shakes to soups to pesto in this thing, no problems at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars hate it!, April 11, 2011
This review is from: Oster 6847 Metallic Silver 5-Cup 12-Speed Blender
I can't lock the silly thing to its base. If the two college graduates in my household can't tighten the darn thing to the blender base, then this is not worth the hassle. If the plastic base caps are as flimsy and brittle as other reviewers have stated, I can't imagine this thing outlasting the amount of abuse required to attach the jar to the blender.

I don't know how safe it is, but I still used it to make one smoothie and it underperformed. Horribly. Smoothie ingredients got stuck and clogged the blender so it wouldn't blend. AND it was terribly loud. I know that's expected, but it's annoying. My entire apartment building SHOULD NOT be subject to such ear-piercing decibels as they no doubt are with this piece of junk.

1.0 out of 5 stars too noisy to tolerate, January 25, 2011
By
This review is from: Oster 6847 Metallic Silver 5-Cup 12-Speed Blender
I bought this blender several months ago. Despite the "12 speed settings", *MY* blender seems - on almost every occasion I use it - to have a hi speed and higher speed. There has NEVER been a progression of speed levels. Period. And the decibel level of the thing has become unbearable. I have never owned a blender before so cannot compare this machine to others. All I can say is that this things is noisy as hell!! Despite what number I push on the controls, the thing runs full bore and it's simply noise (to be redundant) noisy as hell.

While I cannot say all of these models are the same as mine (again, this is the only one I've owned), I must say that my frustration level has raised to a point that I felt compelled to write something.
