i purchased this from walmart for 19.99. it is 900 watts, like the small burner is on a standard electric stove. however, this burner does not provide continuous 900 watts and cycles on and off on "high".

as such water does not boil w/o putting a lid on the pot. if you remove the lid, the water is just on a slow simmer, as if its on medium high setting instead of high. in other words, the high setting on the table top burner is no better than the medium high setting on the small burner of a standard range.

some brands claim that these table top burners are like having a spare range burner. however, this arguably untrue / unrealistic because a range burner, ie small burner, is also 900 watts and it will even glow red because of the continuous heat the small ranger burner emits. but these table tops will not provide continuous heat and therefore should not be marketed by wattage but by temperature instead.

so if you want to cook a pot of rice, this 900watt table top will take up to an hour. but if you use a microwave dish and lid, you can microwave the same amount of rice in 20 minutes with a 500 watt microwave.

i looked up oster.com for more information and to complain. but to my surprise, this single burner product is not even listed on their website.

i believe this product is a shame and worthless as a spare burner. i have also seen other brands with a similar style burner. which makes me believe all of these 900 watt single burner units are made by the same company and just re-branded.

my suggestion is not to waste any time thinking that this burner provides continuous cooking power, like a range, and don't be fooled by the fancy brand and fancy box. its all a shame !

A recent accident cracked our glass top sealed burner stove rendering out of action for a while as the replacement was on a lengthy backorder. We cook every day and wound up going the grilling/crock pot/roasting route but still found we needed and wanted a hot breakfast and sides to go with dinner. My mind flashed back to the old fashioned hot plates as back in college days and we had a look at what was out there. To my delight the old hot plate has gotten a makeover; now called a solid single burner or double burner these are much nicer looking than the old ones that not only looked dangerous but were dangerous and ugly. The Oster Solid Single Burner in particular has a very attractive design and I love the solid burner as it is easier to clean up and it certainly serves my short term needs at an affordable price. When contemplating purchasing it the justification was that we could use it in the future when we have buffet style get-togethers to use to keep food hot. Once I used it for that purpose I quickly learned some of the limitations of this item that I would certainly want to caution users about. For starters, there is not shutoff or kill switch in the event the burner falls off a counter or a table. That’s a fairly serious concern as that burner could hit combustible items such as carpet, linoleum, fabric covered upholstery, or clothing, not to mention exposed skin or body parts. Considerable caution needs to be taken if there are small children or pets around when using it. Probably for this very reason the cord on it is VERY short…barely two feet long, preventing it from falling too far, although whatever was sitting on it is free to fall and spill, causing potential harm. The short cord makes it less than ideal to use for buffet purposes as it necessitates using an extension cord.Read more ›

I have read reviews about this hot plate under performing when cooking. From my personal experience, boils pots filled with water 2x the diameter of the hot plate and 3 times the height (about a 6 quart pot). I have cooked eggs, steak, stews, soups, and pasta on it without any heat issues. Yes it will take a little longer to reach temperatures but once their, it seems to hold the temp. If you need a stove top in a pinch, this thing works just fine for everyday use, just expect the heating times to be a little longer. One other side note, why i took a star off, the temp knob slips off....several times.

This Oster hot plate is really a poor reflection on an otherwise good name brand. What a disappointment. It took almost 40 minutes (yes, forty) to bring two quarts of tap water (covered) to somewhat of a boil. When I removed the cover from the pot it stopped boiling. I have only one recent hot plate to compare this too and that is the 1000W Proctor-Silex. I realize the Oster is only 900W, but it shouldn't make that big a difference. My old Proctor-Silex could easily bring water to a rolling boil and without the pot being covered. With the Oster's design of the flat, black burner plate you can't see the heating element but I would be willing to guess it was not bright orange like my Proctor-Silex. No, I do not work for or own stock in Proctor-Silex, it's just the only hot plate I've used recently. And it recently died after about 18 months of use. However, 18 months of GOOD use for less money beats this Oster. Please remember this is just one person's opinion and your mileage may vary. However, I would be willing to bet (based on some other reviews) I am not the only person disappointed in the performance of this unit. Go for the cheaper, exposed element, 1000W unit and save some money and get a hot plate that truly acts like a 'fifth burner'.
