5.0 out of 5 stars Eureka! I finally found one that works like it should!, May 7, 2011
This review is from: Oster TSSTTVMNDG Digital Large Capacity Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I've been on a quest since last November to find a convection toaster oven that works like it should. So far I've tried four others and none of them worked like they should. I've gone through 2 Black & Decker ovens, a GE, and the last one was a Hamilton Beach.
Now this one works like its supposed to. It's easy to set the cooking time and temperature on it. The presets for CONVECTION BAKE and BAKE is 350 degrees and 30 minutes. It has a preset for PIZZA that is 400 degrees for 20 minutes. A DEFROST setting is for 150 degrees for 30 minutes. It also has a preset for WARM 30 minutes but the book doesn't say what the preset temp is for that and it doesn't show in the display. After testing it I found that it gets too and holds at 175 degrees. The best aspect with this thing is that it actually gets to, and holds within ten degrees, the temperature that its set for! This is the only one out of the five that I have tried that will get to the temperature that its set for, and hold it within 100 degrees of that setting. Most of the ones that I've tried were off from 100 to 150 degrees, or more, of what they are set for. When using the convection setting it is nice and quiet. The Hamilton Beach that I tried last, the fan was so loud I could hear it running in the other room. This one is so quiet that I can barely hear it running while standing right in front of it.
The other thing that I really like with this one is the inside light. It comes on automatically when you press the start button and it shuts off when the timer runs out. You can also turn it on and off with its own button. Its plenty bright enough to see how done what ever is cooking in it is and is something that the other toaster ovens should have. The ovens door closes tight and seems to seal pretty good and the rack inside fits tight enough in its groove that it can be pulled out a few inches without tilting down making it easier to take out what ever your cooking.
There's only a couple of things that I don't particularly care for. One is that the power cord sticks out of the bottom of the oven instead of the back or side. Its no big deal but it makes it a bit awkward keeping it out of the way when moving the oven. The other thing is the crumb tray fell out of it first time I went to set it on the counter and landed edge wise on my bare foot. Again, no big deal really, but it sure did hurt!

Over all, I do believe that this one is a keeper! At least till Oster makes one with a rotisserie in it.

I thought I had added that a 9"x13" cake pan, without handles, just fits inside. I uploaded pictures showing one inside of my oven. The actual size is 9 5/8" x 13 5/8", the 9"x13" is the inside. I also have a nice 2 1/2qt casserole deep dish with lid that just fits nice in it too. The other thing I forgot to add is that it heats up pretty quick too. Some of the others that I had would take 10 or 15 minutes to get up to 350 to 375 degrees. This one takes about 5 to 6 minutes to get up to 375 and a couple more to make 400. It takes about 8 to 10 minutes to heat up and lightly toast a pan of Honey Buns. At 350 they will be hot and a little soft, at 400 they will start getting a little crunchy on the edges and the frosting turning to caramel. Some of the smaller toaster ovens will toast faster and the bigger ones take a lot longer of course. Any who, I'm very happy with this one, it all depends on how long it will last.

5.0 out of 5 stars check pan size, December 23, 2010
This review is from: Oster TSSTTVMNDG Digital Large Capacity Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I just purchased this toaster oven and used the convection function for the first time. I really liked it - it baked really fast and the oven unit itself did not get too hot. The only thing I was disappointed in was that it claims to fit a 9 x 13 pan. All the pans I tried would not fit as they had handles. I used an 8-1/2 x 11 with handles and it fit snug. Now I am trying to find a 9 x 13 without handles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little oven, January 1, 2011
This review is from: Oster TSSTTVMNDG Digital Large Capacity Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This oven bakes like a dream. It bakes so evenly I never have to turn things around. Pizzas come out perfectly with a nice, crisp brown bottom. For my purposes, and the price, it bakes as well as or better than the expensive fancy countertop ovens.

We've had this oven for 7 months now and frankly we don't even use our regular oven anymore. We even used this for Thanksgiving and it performed flawlessly. Love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars The toast of the kitchen, March 25, 2011
This review is from: Oster TSSTTVMNDG Digital Large Capacity Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
Multi purpose appliances are my faves. This good looking Oster oven has it all; up to six slice toaster, a convection oven, a regular oven, a broiler, etc. Interior is the largest I found in it's price range. Although it will accommodate a 9 x 13 baking dish (as advertised on the box), one with exterior handles doesn't fit. Small issue compared with all the pleasant surprises. For me, the deal clincher was the high-quality feel of the door. Others I tested felt cheap. This was a great purchase. Thanks Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great item from Amazon, April 4, 2011

I purchased the Oster TSSTTVMNDG Digital Large Capacity Toaster Oven from Amazon. Consumer Reports had given it a good review. I love the size of the oven. It holds my straight edge 9x13 pan I already had for my old 6-slice undercounter B&D that quit working. I wish it had a more convenient timer. It starts out with a high number & you have to keep holding it to get down to shorter times.

1.0 out of 5 stars Electrical and Burn Hazard, October 7, 2011

This review is from: Oster TSSTTVMNDG Digital Large Capacity Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I like the way to oven looks and it seems to cook well. The electronic controls are easy to use. The clock on my unit keeps good time.

I gave the Oster TSSTTVMNDG the lowest possible rating because of safety concerns.

ELECTRICAL HAZARD: As an electrical engineer, I was astounded to see that the oven is equipped with a 2-wire, ungrounded power cord. In case of a single electrical insulation failure in the oven (common for electrical heating elements) or a liquid spill (also common), the entire metallic interior and exterior of the oven could become electrically "live." This poses the risk of a potentially lethal electrical shock to the user. This seems to me like a callous disregard for the user's safety in order to save a few pennies.

A GFCI outlet would reduce the hazard, but most older kitchens are not equipped with these,

BURN HAZARD: There is apparently little thermal insulation between the interior of the oven and the rear aluminum panel. I measured a temperature of 265 degrees F on the rear panel using a thermocouple-type thermometer. This would cause a severe burn to anyone touching that surface.

I think the only safe way to use the product would be against a nonflammable wall surface. However, many homes have bar-type counters or open "island" counters where the rear of the oven would be accessible. This would be a severe burn hazard for anyone who inadvertently came in contact with the rear of the oven.

Update 1/25/2012: Thanks to everyone who commented on my review. It should be noted that this oven does NOT have the UL approval logo. I do have a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida and 25+ years experience in the field. I did report my concerns to the US Consumer Protection Agency, but they cannot take any action until someone is injured or killed by the product.

There are 3 general ways to make a product electrically safe: One is a three-wire grounded power cord. In case of a liquid spill or short circuit, the electric current will then flow to the ground wire instead of through the user's body. The second means is double insulation. The parts you can touch are all plastic, or there is an extra layer of plastic insulation between internal electrical components and any exposed metal parts. Modern power tools, coffee makers and other small appliances commonly use this method. The third method is a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) device as used on hairdryers. The Oster TSSTTVMNDG oven does not appear to have any of these means to protect the user.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oster Digital Toaster Oven, December 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oster TSSTTVMNDG Digital Large Capacity Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
By the looks of the picture, I thought I was buying a stainless steel toaster oven. But when it arrived, only the front rim was stainless steel and the rest was black. A little misleading. Other than that, the oven seems to work fine. Have used it several times for baking muffins, small casseroles, etc. The convection oven doesn't really help that much and that is one reason I wanted a convection oven. Oh well. It does save me from cranking up the BIG oven.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oven operates well, but ..., February 19, 2011
This review is from: Oster TSSTTVMNDG Digital Large Capacity Toaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
The oven operates pretty well, but you might want to check on the location of your nearest service center. I live in an area with more than a million people, and the nearest service center is still about 75 miles away. The difficulty I have with the unit (and from what I gather on the Internet, lots of others do as well) is that the clock is quite fast, gaining several minutes a day. It is pretty annoying, to have to constantly reset it. I don't know what they use for their clock circuitry, but this appears to be a problem with more than one of the Oster toaster oven models. Other than that, the oven is fine. It does fit a 9 X 13 pan, but you have to use one that doesn't have "ears" on it. To see what will fit, you can try some pans using the display unit in the store.

I was hoping this oven was a bit smaller-I've got limited counter space, but it works really well, and on a hot evening it's great not to have to turn the big oven on and heat the small kitchen up - there are just 2 of us, so this is big enough for chicken, chops, baked shells, anything we want. The convection feature is great-cuts cooking time, but cooks the same as a regular oven. Toasting was a bit tricky at first, but as long as I put the rack in the center slot it's ok. Overall, for the price, I'm really happy with it.
