Hold Still by Sally Mann Acclaimed photographer Sally Mann sorted through boxes of family papers and old pictures to find "deceit and scandal, alcohol, domestic abuse, car crashes, bogeymen, clandestine affairs, dearly loved and disputed family land ... racial complications, vast sums of money made and lost, the return of the prodigal son, and maybe even bloody murder." The book is amazing, as expected. Though this is not a landscape work, of course. I think that every single enthusiastic or professional photographer should see as much as possible of Sebastião Salgado's work. In the first round of view, it is very hard to analyze the photo through a technique-oriented viewpoint. Every single photo makes you think about what your are seeing, what was captured by Sebastião. Only after a third round I could look at composition, contrast, tones etc. By the way, I also learned a lot about composition too from these photos, but one thing that is really unique is the "soulfulness" of the photos. It is not possible to just look at the photos, you always "feel" the photo. Possibly the best photographer ever on his style. Even if this is not the style of photography that you love, theres a lot to learn in terms of human being. I cannot imagine myself selling this book for any reason. Amazing work, I am so glad I could buy this book (and it is a perfect condition 1st edition), so glad!
