Book Description

January 1998 9652291773 978-9652291776
This book puts psychotherapists In The Other Chair. Ten psychotherapists, survivors and children of survivors of the Holocaust, explore their own biographies and professional choices and responses.

The uncovering of what the author has called "a priori countertransference" is a model for training for therapeutic work with Holocaust survivors and their children, and victims of other severe traumatization.

This beautifully written book invites the reader - professional and lay person alike - to personally engage in an emotional and intellectual confrontation with troubling questions with regard to human nature and social organization, that are brought up by extreme violence.

Editorial Reviews

Review

While most books on psychotherapy with Holocaust survivors focus on therapeutic technique or the clients' experiences, this unique and beautifully written book explores the personal experiences of the therapists in relation to their clients', and often their own, traumatic backgrounds. It is essential reading for psychotherapists and other mental health professionals. The way in which In The Other Chair confronts the horrors of the past makes it a source of inspiration and comfort for all those whose lives have, directly or indirectly, been affected by the Holocaust or other man-made trauma.

Onno van der Hart, Ph.D. Professor, Department of Clinical Psychology Utrecht University, Utrecht, Netherlands

The power of In The Other Chair is in its insistent invitation to the trauma therapist to know herself or himself. Yvonne Tauber frames such knowledge as a personal, professional, and ethical necessity. She accurately notes that "It can't be emphasized enough just how much the therapist's whole person is involved in therapy with survivors" This fact is one basis for the intense transference and countertransference responses that are inevitable in trauma therapies. Tauber's sensitive and probing interviews and clearly written accounts provide an important model for all therapists who work with survivors, as well as for those engaged in training and supervision.

Laurie Anne Pearlman, PhD Research Director, Traumatic Stress Institute South Windsor, CT, USA -- Publisher Comments

This review is from: In the Other Chair: Holocaust Survivors and the Second Generation as Therapists and Clients (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this book immensely and found it very moving. Personally, the look into the difficulties and triumphs of the Second Generation was intriguing, warming and touching. As a professional, I was most interested in and inspired by the candid discussion of countertransference issues. A must for the professional who wants to make sure to remain human. Useful for the client who wants a more personal view of the psychotherapist.
