Book Description

June 25, 2008
One house. Forty strangers. Add vodka and stir . . .
Every summer, scores of Manhattan twentysomethings take part in an annual ritual with a camp-like culture distinctly its own: the Hamptons sharehouse. When Rachel and her two best friends buy their shares for twenty times each of their bank balances, they're imagining days filled with lazy suntanning and classy clambakes and nights spent rubbing shoulders with the Olsen twins and other celebrities. But once they arrive at 1088 Montauk Highway on Memorial Day weekend, they find that the reality falls a bit short. What looks like any other million-dollar mansion--on the outside--plays host to drunken escapades, explicit nudity, hot tub hookups, hideous hangovers, and juvenile mischief on the inside. As housemates jockey for limited bathroom time and beer pong mania takes over the house, Rachel finds herself wondering if it's possible to find true love--or even just survive the summer--in The Hamptons.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Having authored a series of New York Post columns about her Hamptons McMansion summer share experiences, Rosemberg here follows friends Jamie, Rachel and Allison as they plunk down upwards of two grand apiece for the privilege of sharing a bedroom and jockeying for bathroom space on alternate weekends, and set out to find the men of their dreams or, in Jamie's case, passing fancies. Rachel hopes to duplicate too-perfect older sisiter Dana's huband-hunting success; Allison locates some mixed feelings for her previously uninspiring ex-; Jamie's not-too-friendly rivalry with flirtatious housemate Ilana colors her macking. First-time novelist Rosemberg has a sharp eye for telling details and an amusing way of limning the alcohol-soaked, sexually rampant funseeking crowd, but most of the characters blur together (especially the men), and the book never registers much emotional impact.

This book was a real disappointment. It was boring and repetitive, I could not even finish it. Each chapter involves getting drunk on Friday, "anonymous hooking up" and midnight barfing. No plot, no destination.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can Be Skipped, July 1, 2010
By
This review is from: How the Other Half Hamptons (Paperback)
I started out summer of 2010 with Lovehampton by Sherri Rifkin, a highly entertaining book about a sharehouse in the Hamptons. So when I finished that book, craving more hilarious beach reads taking place in the Hamptons, I came across How the Other Half Hamptons, expecting an equal amount of plot and character development, eloquence, and humor. Oh boy, was I wrong.

First of all, none of the characters have depth. This was highly disappointing from the start, when I noticed that the three main protagonists were very stereotypical and dull. I convinced myself that they would grow dimensions as the story progressed, but I was left turning the last few pages with disappointment. All of the characters were selfish, whiny, and very difficult to put up with at times. Second, there were way too many minor characters to keep up with. I understand that it takes place in a sharehouse with 40 people, but honestly? Rob? Brian? Craig? Steve? Tara/Jocelyn? John? Who?

The plot, like the characters, was trite and dull. Twenty-somethings drinking too much, hooking up, and cattiness. I would advise that you skip this book and find a different book about a Hamptons sharehouse. And trust me, there are several good ones out there.

2.0 out of 5 stars Jersey Shore Meets Hamptons, February 10, 2011

Very disappointing. It's like "The Jersey Shore" multiplies and rents Hamptons share house...At least one thing can be said for Jersey Shore..they don't play flip cup..Flip cup???? Seriously???? Teens maybe..20's? I dont think so..I would suggest reading "A Perfect Manhattan." At least you care about the characters..I kept hoping these characters would drown in the pool or be murdered by the crazy cabbie.. Save your money and your time.
