Book Description

September 1, 2008
Abrams confronts centuries-old conflicts that arise when lovers are forced to collide with the hatreds that often divide Jew and Muslim. Drawing upon her background growing up in a tightly-knit, closed Syrian-Jewish community, she weaves a powerful, action-packed story of political intrigue with an exploration of irrational hatred and unconditional love.

Syrian-born Rami, a passionate Muslim drawn into the clutches of an extremist organization, and American-born Syrian Jew Rayna, raised in the orthodox tradition but longing to experience life beyond the confines of her upbringing, meet at an American university. They endure backlash from intolerant and hostile parents and suffer at the hands of an erratic and fanatical Muslim leader.

Review

Set against a collegiate background in Maryland, the main characters are anything but white-bread teens. Syrian-born Rami is a passionate Muslim drawn into the clutches of an extremist terrorist organization. Rayna is an American-born Syrian Jew raised in Orthodox traditions but longing to experience life beyond the confines of her upbringing. When the two opposites attract, their taboo relationship sparks intolerance on all sides. --The Mountain Express, Asheville, NC

About the Author

Bahia Abrams is the author of The Other Half of My Soul. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, to parents of Syrian Jewish heritage, and received a degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, one of the schools depicted in her book. For thirty years, Abrams lived and worked in the Washington, D.C., area before moving to the mountains of North Carolina.

When her son narrowly escaped two World Trade Center attacks in 1993 and then again on 9/11, she re-evaluated her life, yearning to know of the formula for unconditional love and the seeds that fuel hatred. Drawing from her own life experiences, much research and many interviews, Abrams followed a vision and The Other Half of My Soul was born. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!, January 31, 2008
The Other Half Of My Soul is a marvelous read. I could not put it down. The plot held me spellbound. The snake part had me curling in my seat. I could not wait to come home from work to finish it without interruption. I read right through dinner. Not a hunger pain or even a desire to fix something for myself. I could not think about going to sleep. Whew! Suspense right up to the end. I recommend that the whole world read it. I hope there will be a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely and compelling, February 1, 2008
An excellent read! As others have said, it is hard to put down from the very beginning. Although it is a novel, this book helps you attach the stories of individuals with events from the Middle East and the rest of the world. Very easy reading style, can't believe it is her first novel! I'll be looking for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars A ROLLER COASTER RIDE!, January 16, 2008

As an avid reader, this is one book that I could not put down. I was hooked from the very first page.
The characters were so real that I felt I knew them personally.
Bahia Abrams cleverly weaves an incredible love story between a Muslim and a Jew with real issues and actual places in today's world.
The Other Half of My Soul is rich with romance, action, and intrigue.
I recommend this novel to anyone who is prepared to stay up all night!
