1 Of The Best 1968 Long Player Debuts, January 29, 2011
This review is from: Other Half (Audio CD)
The Other Half originally released in 1968 & recorded by the great Leo Kulka on Acta Records, a small label, but big enough to draw attention to some of the great groups on their roster back in the mid-late 60's. This is raw, loud, hard rock with a definite punk edge to it, at it's best. Every song is worth the price of admission here, with very good vocals from Nowlan & great acid guitar riffing courtesy of Randy Holden, but not sure if he played on all the tracks on this album. Copies of the album are hard to come by these days, and if they do, they are less then very good condition. Here is the Radioactive reissue released a few years ago. Like most of these mediocre type of reissues (Fallout, Gear Fab, Get Back & Akarma included), the quality is questionable with the remastering coming from a vinyl copy, not the master tapes! So this is a decent purchase if you never heard it, but do yourself a favor & hold out for an original copy, which is how this music should be appreciated anyway. Conclusion: Great album, mediocre reissue!

Mid 60's Punk R&B, October 23, 2009
This review is from: Other Half (Audio CD)
In a word, this album rocks! Think early Love and Beck era Yardbirds. Randy Holden (former Fender IV, Sons Of Adam, future Blue Cheer guitarist) is lighting it up. A real blast of adrenalized rock'n'roll. One of the things that always amazed me about this album was guitarist Randy Holden's claim that he didn't like the sound of the guitar he had at this time, said he wasn't getting the sound he wanted. Can you imagine if he had some nice equipment? This album was a low budget affair and the band was rushed quickly in and out of the studio, but they still managed an amazing LP! This is an album anyone who loves hard driving r&b based garage rock should own. Randy Holden is brilliant, even under the worst of circumstances, an almost unknown guitar virtuoso capable already of sonic highs in a Jeff Beck vein, though he has his own sound. Wonderful fuzzed out mid 60's rock as it should be done, progressing in quality till you get to the final cut, What Can I Do For You part 2. This number already has the heavy dark guitar sound Randy would perfect through his short stint in Blue Cheer and on his brilliant solo effort, Population II. This is the band that gave you Mr. Pharmacist on the Nuggets collection. You can get a glimpse of The Other Half jamming in a club in the pilot episode of The Mod Squad. It features most of Oz Lee Eaves Drops and a portion of Bad Day. These 30 second sound bites can't really do this album justice. Check it out. Any album with Randy Holden is worth your time and money.
