Book Description

Texas Rangers October 27, 2009

Texas Ranger Andy Pickard is assigned what appears to be a routine duty. Donley Bannister, a West Texas horse trader, has killed a thug named Cletus Slocum, who stole one of Bannister’s horses. Ranger Pickard is ordered to find and arrest Bannister and bring him to trial.

The Bannister case turns out to be anything but routine. Pickard picks up Bannister’s trail and finds him holed up with some cohorts who wound and vow to kill the young Ranger. Ironically, Bannister saves Pickard’s life by fending off the would-be killers and taking Andy to a cow camp where his injury can be treated. When he is able to ride, Andy locates and trails Geneva Bannister, Donley’s young wife, hoping she will lead him to the wanted man. The trail takes unexpected turns and detours: Near Fort Concho Andy’s mission is interrupted by an ugly racial incident in which a black soldier is killed; Bannister is shot by outlaw Curly Tadlock and left for dead; and Tadlock brutally assaults Geneva.

Andy Pickard, newly married, still unsure of himself and his choice of Rangering as a career, must unravel this tangled series of events and accomplish his mission of bringing an accused killer to justice.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Longtime fans of the late Kelton, who died this summer, will welcome the return of Texas Ranger Andy Pickard to the saddle. In 1880s Texas, newlywed Ranger Pickard is on the trail of Donley Bannister, wanted for the murder of low-down Cletus Slocum. Bannister won't be an easy fugitive to nab, because most folks think Bannister did a good deed by killing Cletus. Pickard shares these sentiments to an extent, but as a dutiful lawman, he will not rest until he has captured Bannister. Pickard's grueling pursuit takes him all over Texas, and along the way he's shot, saved by Bannister, aided by a black army deserter and constantly dealing with frontier lowlifes and owlhoots. Bannister's wife, Geneva, also pursues Bannister, enduring her own suffering, but not before dishing out her particular brand of justice to those who cheat or harm her. When the big showdown arrives, Kelton tosses in some dramatic and satisfying plot twists to give this tale extra punch. This is an exciting oater, with Kelton's signature western authenticity and characters drawn outside the typical western formula. (Nov.)

From Booklist

Veteran Kelton once again shows why he is considered to be one of the giants of the western genre. Andy Pickard, a young Texas Ranger, is assigned the job of bringing in Donley Bannister, a horse trader accused of murder. He tracks Bannister down pretty quickly, but he is thrown for a loop when Bannister, instead of turning tail and running when Andy is jumped by some thugs, actually saves Andy’s life (and then disappears again). What follows is a story told mostly in shades somewhere between black and white. Is Bannister friend or foe? A villain or a good man who did one bad thing? Where does Andy’s duty end and his compassion begin? Written with Kelton’s usual eye for character and place, the novel uses the formulas associated with typical westerns to tell a moving story of honor and courage. --David Pitt

I was not disappointed in any way by this book, except that it was Kelton's last book. He will be sorely missed. He reuses some tried and true formulas and puts them together in a good book. A good read all around.

This was a typical Kelton. Historically correct and easy to picture the story he tells. I hated for the book to end.

the western lovers have lost a one of a kind in Elmer Kelton and his Western novels about Texas in the 1800's. No other writer has been able to capture the feeling of being in Texas in that era of our history as Kelton has done. His last book "Other Men's Horses"does an excellent job capturing the every day life of a Texas Ranger and his pursuit of a horse thief. Elmer and his writings will be missed.
