I was not disappointed in any way by this book, except that it was Kelton's last book. He will be sorely missed. He reuses some tried and true formulas and puts them together in a good book. A good read all around.

This was a typical Kelton. Historically correct and easy to picture the story he tells. I hated for the book to end.

the western lovers have lost a one of a kind in Elmer Kelton and his Western novels about Texas in the 1800's. No other writer has been able to capture the feeling of being in Texas in that era of our history as Kelton has done. His last book "Other Men's Horses"does an excellent job capturing the every day life of a Texas Ranger and his pursuit of a horse thief. Elmer and his writings will be missed.

I liked most of Elmer Kelton works and enjoyed the Texas Ranger series the best of all. It just kept getting better and better. It had started in pre-Civil War Texas when Comanches were still a threat to towns such as San Antonio. This book takes places as the frontier is closing, the buffalo gone and the Comanches removed to Indian Territory.
Andy Pickard is now the center of the tale although his old friend Len Tanner weaves in and out of the story. On a long road following a fugitive, he encounters many rich and interesting characters. A good story and a delightful read.

I knew him personally and respected his integrity, intelligence, wit, his attention and dedication to well-researched detail. He wrote fiction based on fact and this book is no exception. Though intended to entertain, it is a true reflection of the Texas frontier. It is history.

Elmer is always good reading. I have read most of his books and they are much better then the shoot-em-ups most writers put out.

As a fellow Texan, I have enjoyed Kelton's writing for a long time. He interweaves historical data into his story which makes it more interesting.
