Book Description

Painfully shy and socially awkward, Ginny avoids engaging in a world filled with "other people" as best as she can. After a failed suicide attempt, Ginny is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and begins a journey towards improving her distraught life. In her quest to fit in among other people, Ginny studies the behaviors of her picture-perfect new neighbors, Jim and Nina, and tries her best to mimic their life skills. But, will Ginny's attempts to be one of the other people help her fit into their world, or send her crashing back deeper into the dark, isolated world she is desperately trying to escape?

"Ms. O'Callan has once again demonstrated that she is a master at storytelling. Her characters' imperfections make this novel sheer perfection!" --- Catherine Wright, Bucks County Review

From the Author

Before I began writing Other People, a character named "Ginny" magically appeared in my mind - as all my characters do - I sensed something very peculiar about her. Her emotions were fierce and intense, and she seemed to only be able to calm herself and keep those wild emotions under control by ice-skating or cutting herself with a razor blade. In an effort to understand Ginny better, I knew I needed to investigate the wide realm of mental illness to find a label in which she might fit. Luckily, I came across a newspaper article one Sunday morning about a mental disorder known as Borderline Personality Disorder. It was an exact match for Ginny. So, what exactly is borderline personality disorder or bpd?
"Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe mood disorder characterized by emotional instability, black and white thinking, issues with self-image, reckless and impulsive behavior." - source, Amanda Watson, clinical therapist.
Stuffed into a nutshell, it is a complete mental nightmare from which its victim suffers. Writing Ginny's story in Other People was quite the arduous task and most difficult writing for me to date. I did extensive research on the disorder to get into her head, and it terrified me. I was an intense, dramatic mess for the nine months it took me to write it. I was both exhausted and relieved when I had finished, but I know it will be worth it, as I feel it may help readers get better insight into the mindset of a person who suffers from this, and how difficult life can be for them. ~ Kelly O'Callan

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating March 25, 2014
By Julie
Format:Kindle Edition
The characters are well defined and developed. The author takes a very difficult to understand mental disorder (borderline personality disorder), describes it and then brings it to life in her main character, Ginny, who struggles daily to live a normal life. Although the novel is fiction, it is totally believable, realistic and moving. I highly recommend this book to anyone intrigued by what goes on in the mind of someone who suffers from mental illness, or if you enjoy books that center on characters.

I downloaded this book because I'm planning to be a psychiatrist so anything related interests me. This is a dead on representation of borderline personality disorder. It is written very much so that I finished it in one night. Definitely recommend for anyone interested in this topic.

I loved this book! We all strive to be normal- this captured what a struggle it is to fit in. The characters were very real and different. The story shows how we all need each other to bring out our best and the need for Christian faith to bring us all together.
