Pure David, pure fun.,
By Biblio (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Other Side of Down (Audio CD)
It seems David Archuleta's virtues sometimes become vices with reviewers. Everyone agrees that David has extraordinary vocal talent and so it is natural that listeners want David to produce vocal extravaganzas and not much else. The thing with David is that because he is extraordinarily talented, he can and does enjoy singing an eclectic range of music.
So if you are tired of albums where every song sounds the same, then this is the album for you. If you are tired of music which is depressing and sleazy and long for something uplifting and joyful, then this is the album for you. If you are tired of talentless singers, then this is the album for you. No not every song is a ballad - many of them showcase fun catchy melodies - but that is a part of what makes this album so great; this album is called The Other Side Of Down for a reason and David's voice is showcased very well. As a songwriter for 10 of the 12 songs on this album, David's goal was to share his fun, quirky personality and produce music that would have a lasting positive message. The album includes bouncy, quirky tracks such as "Elevator" and the title track 'The Other Side Of Down' with its message of continuing to put one foot in front of the other and not letting life get you down. It includes the radio-friendly and currently popular synthesizer sound of "Something Bout Love" where David acknowledges that love isn't always easy but it's always worth it. There are songs with catchy melodies like "Look Around" and "Complain" as well as tunes that can only be described as beautiful and touching such as "Falling Stars" and "Things are Gonna Get Better". All of this is capped off with "My Kind of Perfect" which is a gorgeous ballad about looking on the inside of a person when looking for love rather than the superficial outside. The two most important elements that tie this album together is the undeniable vocal talent that is David Archuleta and the irrepressibly positive message in each and every song. Altogether, this album has something for everyone and will leave you loving every song for entirely different reasons. Listen to this album and you'll find yourself having a better day. Listen to it often and you'll find yourself giving yourself pep talks about not letting the difficult moments in life get the better of you.

I love this album! Great catchy songs. David did a great job writing these songs. Great messages, great voice. The messages deal with adversity in life and how we can deal with it. Something we all face. This take on coming out of the hard times is great! Love this whole CD! Can't get enough of it! We need something to pull us out of the negative stuff that is in our face all the time! Way to go David! I would highly recommend this album to anyone!

David puts himself out there in his second pop album. Having co-written 10 of the 12 tracks, you can hear how much he's grown as an artist and vocalist in the last 2 years. If you're tired of the junky lyrics and pointless on Top 40, give this a listen.

I have been a fan of David Archuleta since American Idol. This young man is the real deal. His voice is incomparable to any teen singer in the market today. His singing live is unbelievable. He is such a rare talent in today's music industry. I just received my copy of TOSOD. This body of work is excellent. David's music is not only good, but it provides the listener with a message and makes one think. He touches your very soul with his voice. I have purchased every album he has made and have never, ever been disappointed. It is rare to find an artist where I like every single song on his album. Well, David Archuleta has not struck out once with me. Buy this young man's music and you will not be disappointed.

Fun and Catchy,
This review is from: The Other Side of Down (Audio CD)
I have loved this CD. I've had the album for several days now. It is so refreshing to have something positive. I find myself waking up each morning with various tunes from the CD buzzing around in my head.
I keep trying to decide which song I like the most and it's the one I'm listening to at the time. They are all different. Falling Stars is so beautiful, Look Around is thought provoking, Stomping the roses is like yeah, I've felt like that. The album is well thought out and well crafted. It is so fun and makes you smile. Great job Mr Archuleta and all the musicians you worked with.

Very Upbeat Album!,

With David having such a diverse fanbase age-wise, it's a challenge to make a CD to suit everyone. This CD comes pretty close. There is mostly good quality pop with overall good lyrics and tunes combined with excellent vocals, which are the trademark of anything David sings. As an older fan, I really enjoy most of the cuts. Sure, a couple are a bit over-produced for my liking, but all of the songs have a great message and are very upbeat in nature. All songs give you that feeling of hope and optimism if a person keeps trying to improve his/her life. I love to hear this young man sing; I just feel better every time I do ---- and isn't that the purpose of music anyway? I hope David always remains commercially viable so we can always look forward of more to come. Thanks, David, for such a great effort!

An amazing singer!,
This review is from: The Other Side of Down (Audio CD)
I personally loved the message in each and every song. David is a very positive person. Obviously, some people like the negative, raunchy kind of songs. You aren't going to get those from David, so if that is what you want, don't bother to buy this album. The radio seems to be only playing songs with lots of autotune and all kinds of bells and whistle. Many of these have no melody and questionable lyrics. Do you really want the youth of today listening to that stuff? Some songs may seem over-produced by those who just want to hear David's beautiful voice, but the producers, writers, and Jive are trying to satisfy a lot of people. Like it or not, that is what sells right now. These songs still aren't anything like the junk I am hearing on the Top 40. I would buy an album of David singing acapella, but I am afraid that album wouldn't pay the bills. We are all trying to find a way to feed our families and live in a comfortable fashion, so David is trying to sing about what he believes in and sing in a way that enough people will listen. David has said in many interviews that he just wants to sing and show who he is with his songs. He knows his fanbase, and he knows that they get him and appreciate who he is and what he does musically. He doesn't really think in terms of Top 40 or having a big hit (although, I am sure he would be very happy if that happened). Second to his beautiful voice, I love that part of him...the part that doesn't sing for the fame and big fortune but sings for the pure joy of it and the hope that he can help others along the way. He has helped me and made me a better person. I think David Archuleta will be around for a long time, long after many of the Top 40 singers are just a vague memory.

Good But Not Much Different,
This review is from: The Other Side of Down (Audio CD)
I like the his music but I keep hoping for more. This album doesn't seem much different than his other two. His voice is beautiful but he needs better material to show case his voice. Here's hoping that in the his fourth album he reaches his potential.
