5.0 out of 5 stars Scripturally and spiritually accurate
This is a very important book for modern western women to read. Not many will, and many who do WILL be offended by it. THe authors tone and style are not at all offensive, quite the contrary she is gentle and honest at the same time. But the message she presents goes againts everything Western media teaches about women and sadly what vast numbers of church attendee's have...

1.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Helpful, But Overall Vague
This book did highlight some great points about the purpose of women. However, it mostly focused the whole book on Adam and Eve. I wish that it would have included more examples of other women in the Bible because obviously the story of Adam and Eve does not talk about her relationship with other people. It briefly discusses Proverbs 31, but pretty much skips the part...

5.0 out of 5 stars Scripturally and spiritually accurate, September 3, 2002
This review is from: The Other Side of the Garden : Biblical Womanhood for Today's World (Paperback)
This is a very important book for modern western women to read. Not many will, and many who do WILL be offended by it. THe authors tone and style are not at all offensive, quite the contrary she is gentle and honest at the same time. But the message she presents goes againts everything Western media teaches about women and sadly what vast numbers of church attendee's have accepted.
That said, if you are willing to look at men and women differently than your 21st century upbringing has taught you to, then you will most certainly learn something. She presents a picture of a woman as terribly important in society because of her influence on her husband and her children. She shows how adhering to the Biblical model for families is actually a great freedom for women, not the bondage feminists would lead you to believe.
In regard to the previous review expressing her concern about yeilding authority to an irresponsible husband, I do not believe that what occured in her home was at all what the author was allowing for. The intent was that we are to submit as long as they do not ask us to do something immoral or illegal. In such a case, a woman is supposed to take the matter to her local congregation and elders, and ask them to deal with her husband. I believe it is unfair to blame Fugate for that situation.
in addition Fugate does not express anything that contradicts scripture as a previous reviewer implied. Every point is carefully based upon scripture (exegesis). This is different from using scripture to make your point (eisigesis). After reading her book I would encourage the reader to check every scripture reference, every precept and every doctrine against scripture. After such an exploration you still feel you must reject her position, then do so carefully.
The writting is very clear and easy to read, the layout is open, and each main point is highlighted.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an eye opener!, October 8, 2000

This review is from: The Other Side of the Garden : Biblical Womanhood for Today's World (Paperback)
I found this book challenging. Many times, as I considered the authors thoughts and experiences, I realized that much of my view of myself as a woman needed to be challenged. My perception of marriage has been shaped and molded by outside influences, not by the bible. As a Christian, I needed to be shaken up. Virginia Fugate presents this in a way that helps you take a hard look at where you stand and why you're there. I appreciate her presentation and that she has spent much of her adult life working to develop her walk as a woman who truly wants to live as God created her to.

5.0 out of 5 stars the other side of the garden, May 30, 2000
This review is from: The Other Side of the Garden : Biblical Womanhood for Today's World (Paperback)
This book is well written, logical, and well supported with biblical references. It is not "politically correct" but rather "biblically correct" and I highly recommend it to anyone (woman or man) who is married or contemplating marriage.

I'm only on chapter 7, but already I've decided that every married woman I know needs to read this, in fact, most married men as well. It will be given to my daughters before they say "I do". Excellent clarification of the God-given male and female roles. Great book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars For Tender Hearts Only!, October 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Other Side of the Garden : Biblical Womanhood for Today's World (Paperback)
Every Christian wife and wife-to-be should read this book! The challenges of living a Christ-centered life in today's feminist society are addressed truthfully in an atmosphere of experience and humor. But this book is for the woman who truly desires to live her life in obedience to her Saviour. If you are searching for a closer walk with your Lord and are willing to soften your heart before Him, you will not believe the blessings you will receive! This is a message that is sorely lacking in today's church, and one that is greatly needed. See what God can do with your marriage, and enjoy the unparalleled blessings of growing old with your husband.

4.0 out of 5 stars Biblical womanhood made clear!, May 18, 2000
By
This review is from: The Other Side of the Garden : Biblical Womanhood for Today's World (Paperback)
Mrs. Fugate deals biblically with the controversial topic of women's roles or what is termed "Biblical Womanhood."

Although this book challenged many of my beliefs (being raised in a feminist home), as a Christian I knew that Mrs. Fugate was right on!

I recommend this book to every woman who desires to know her role according to the final authority, the Bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transforming, June 19, 2010
My friends and I have been reading this book (along with the workbook and other recommended reading) and after 7 weeks through, we are already seeing a significant and positive change in our lives. We are being transformed!

Before our study, each of us considered ourselves to be very "strong & independent modern women". I admired the quick witted, headstrong, independent heroines in books, movies, and television. Now, I see these women, myself included, in a much more sober light.

As my friends and I came together week after week, we found ourselves challenged and even offended by what Virginia R. Fugate had to say about Biblical womanhood. HOWEVER, putting our feelings aside, we found ourselves convicted by the Holy Spirit and God's awesome authority. How could we deny the powerful truth of the Scriptures?

We each began applying God's truth about authority, submission, and obedience into our daily lives and we started to see how quickly God affirmed us and blessed us for trusting Him.

God blessed me by healing my relationship with my dad (something I never imagined could be recovered so quickly!)and God has blessed me in my relationships overall. God's truth is even making me and my friends radiate with God's beauty! Seriously, we're dodging suitors left and right! Lol!

I highly recommend this book to all women.
