The Other Side: Journeys in Baja California is a tale of two journeys, one outer and one inner. The outer journey explores the length, breadth, and depth of Baja California with its rich history, its vibrant people, and the haunting beauty of its land. The inner journey moves through a tumultuous border world where cultures meet and clash and sometimes merge, and where an encounter with another way of life can illuminate the undiscovered landscape of the soul.
Judy Goldstein Botello was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but came to California in 1969 after completing her medical training. There she raised her family and worked as a pediatrician. Her first published work appeared in 1986: a poem in the literary journal "The Southern Review of Literature." Her first book, "Adventures with Kids in San Diego," was published in 1991, followed ten years later by "More Adventures with Kids in San Diego," co-authored by Goldstein-Botello's daughter and field tested on her grandchildren.
A passion for Mexico, and years of travel through the Baja California peninsula, led to the creation of Goldstein-Botello's most acclaimed book, the travel memoir "The Other Side: Journeys in Baja California." Published in 1998, it is still a favorite of those who love the Baja California peninsula of remote beaches and hidden mountain ranches, the wild country unknown to the casual tourist.
In addition to her books, Dr. Goldstein Botello has written numerous magazine articles and book reviews. She lives with her husband in San Diego County.
