Book Description

September 1998
In an increasingly multi-cultural society, The Other Side is a travel memoir for our times. It explores the world of the border where landscapes are both subjective and objective, and where journeys are measured not only in terms of miles, but also in terms of personal transition.

The Other Side: Journeys in Baja California is a tale of two journeys, one outer and one inner. The outer journey explores the length, breadth, and depth of Baja California with its rich history, its vibrant people, and the haunting beauty of its land. The inner journey moves through a tumultuous border world where cultures meet and clash and sometimes merge, and where an encounter with another way of life can illuminate the undiscovered landscape of the soul.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"We came of age together," says the author of another very personal exploration of Baja California (see above). Botello, a San Diego pediatrician, divorced mother of two and author of Adventures with Kids in San Diego, parallels her developing romance with the Mexican man who became her husband and the voyages across the border, to "the other side," that shaped her sensitivity to the Mexican way of life. She takes the reader along on a series of trips, from 1978 to 1993, that include not only vignettes of often amusing culture clashes but also glimpses of the developing romantic relationship. Like others enamored of the old Camino Real (now known as Mexico's Highway 1), she mourns the decline of Baja's "wild spirit." Like many memoirists, Botello seems to recall improbably lengthy stretches of dialogue complete with adverbs ("I said softly"; "said Chuey gravely"; etc.) from decades before?a trait that's likely to irk the skeptical. Still, she deftly and humorously juggles family, career and relationships in travel that is both geographical and spiritual, and in this lively journal, she pays tribute to the many faces of Baja and its people.

From Library Journal

In 1978, Botello (Adventures with Kids in San Diego, Sunbelt, 1991) found herself divorced with two kids to raise and a new home. The day after being "warned" by a neighbor to be wary of the two Mexicans across the street ("You know how they are"), her friendship with the Mexicans, teachers from a local college, began. Over the years, they introduced her to their culture through music, food, and road trips into Baja California. More than a book of travel essays about Baja California, this chronicle explores these relationships along with prejudices, music, and culture as Botello probes the "other side" of the border, both physical and spiritual. Suitable for all libraries, both public and academic.?Sandra Knowles, Sch. of Medicine Lib., Columbia, SC

More About the Author

Judy Goldstein Botello was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but came to California in 1969 after completing her medical training. There she raised her family and worked as a pediatrician. Her first published work appeared in 1986: a poem in the literary journal "The Southern Review of Literature." Her first book, "Adventures with Kids in San Diego," was published in 1991, followed ten years later by "More Adventures with Kids in San Diego," co-authored by Goldstein-Botello's daughter and field tested on her grandchildren.

A passion for Mexico, and years of travel through the Baja California peninsula, led to the creation of Goldstein-Botello's most acclaimed book, the travel memoir "The Other Side: Journeys in Baja California." Published in 1998, it is still a favorite of those who love the Baja California peninsula of remote beaches and hidden mountain ranches, the wild country unknown to the casual tourist.

In addition to her books, Dr. Goldstein Botello has written numerous magazine articles and book reviews. She lives with her husband in San Diego County.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judy Botello Captures the Heart and Soul of Baja!, October 9, 1998
This review is from: The Other Side : Journeys in Baja California (Paperback)
When you begin Judy Botello's new book, you'll find yourself instantly transported to another dimension, and you'll stay there until it ends.

A single mother and pediatrician, Judy fell in love with Baja soon after she moved to Southern California in the '70s. In a delightful, tenderly insightful series of stories, she takes you along with her on adventures south of the border that span over 15 years. As her understanding and passion for the peninsula, its people and culture deepens, so will yours.

Baja is our last outback. For those who know it well, it's a magnet. It draws us back time and time again, for it's there that we reconnect with the essence of who we really are. When you finish this book, you'll understand why....

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a lovely read that possesse many aspects of the humor., July 14, 1999

This review is from: The Other Side : Journeys in Baja California (Paperback)
I have recently read The Other Side - Journeys in Baja California by Judy Goldstein Botello and loved every word of the book so much that I had to write this letter of praise. Not only do I enjoy (meaning passionate about) travel memoir-adventure books and genre, but especially the subject of Mexico and sub-subject of Baja California. The author is extremely talented to articulate and convey her observations in such a charming way. It is a lovely read that possesses many aspects of the humor, color, soul of this fascinating region and its people. There is much more than meets the eye at the surface and the author captures this and a period of time that will never be again.

Sincerely,

Lorraine Holle, Resident of Seattle, WA
