After 2 failed albums on Epic/CBS ("Burn & "Closer",) and a new deal with Liberty/EMI/Capitol, Miss Melba was bounced back into "hit" territory with her first EMI/Capitol album, "What A Woman Needs" and this, her sophomore EMI/Capitol CD, "The Other Side of the Rainbow." Featuring the MONSTER HITS, "Love's Comin' At Ya," "Mind Up Tonight" and "Underlove," Moore rode the first waves of synthesized funk (courtesy of producers Paul Laurence Jones III and Kashif) in the same fashion which Evelyn "Champagne" King did and with great results. There are some nice, tight and funky joints here coupled with some really pretty ballads and her incredible vocal range to boot. The most beautiful song here in my opinion is "Don't Go Away," not to be confused with a song of the same title from her 1986 album, "A Lot of Love." They're two completely different songs. Otherwise what you've got here is a nice early-80's platter of the most contagious Funk typical of that era in Old School R&B. Don't sleep on ANY of her Capitol albums from 1981-1986. They're all masterpieces!

Melba Moore's funkiest album ever,

Melbe Moore has had a long, illustrious career so her musical style has not stayed the same all the time. I'd assume her core listeners have always been musical fans or soul music lovers of 70s and the adult contemporary songs of 80s, but, being produced by such recognizable names as Kashif and Paul Lawrence Jones III, half the songs from this album were enough to make Melba a mainstay of funky electro funk scene of early-80s.As an appreciator of funk, this one is almost the best collection of Funky Melba Moore (less McFadden & Whitehead-produced "Let's Stand Together"). |
