Book Description

July 29, 2008
In the past, the present, or the future, Drake shows you we "support our troops." Life is grim and often short for the few who protect the many, usually for little pay, less gratitude, and dim prospects of growing old.

*A squadron of fighter spacecraft, their mother ship destroyed, are lost in the interstellar void, with little hope of finding their way home.

*A Roman soldier, serving both his emperor and creatures beyond his comprehension, must destroy a usurper who is the catspaw for beings from another world with very unpleasant plans for this one.

*Two battle-scarred Vietnam veterans battle the insectoid horror abducting humans for a purpose to which death is infinitely preferable.

*The alien enemy at war with humans and their allies has blown up Halley's comet. Can Earth uncover the reason for this apparently meaningless act before it's too late?

*Two new Hammer's Slammers adventures. And more. . . .

Soldiers battling throughout space and time, as only David Drake can portray them, doing what they have to do to keep the darkness away from hearth and home, even if they have little chance of surviving to return there

More About the Author

The Army took David Drake from Duke Law School and sent him on a motorized tour of Viet Nam and Cambodia with the 11th Cav, the Blackhorse. He learned new skills, saw interesting sights, and met exotic people who hadn't run fast enough to get away.

Dave returned to become Chapel Hill's Assistant Town Attorney and to try to put his life back together through fiction making sense of his Army experiences.

Dave describes war from where he saw it: the loader's hatch of a tank in Cambodia. His military experience, combined with his formal education in history and Latin, has made him one of the foremost writers of realistic action SF and fantasy. His bestselling Hammer's Slammers series is credited with creating the genre of modern Military SF. He often wishes he had a less interesting background.

Dave lives with his family in rural North Carolina.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Conflicts, March 23, 2008

This review is from: Other Times Than Peace (Hardcover)
Other Times Than Peace (2006) is a collection of eleven SF short stories and an introduction by the author. Two of the stories are new, one is revised, and the others were originally published between 1975 and 2001.

Lambs to the Slaughter (2001) is set in the same universe as Ranks of Bronze, although the legionnaires are different persons. Men Like Us (1980) is a post-apocalyptic tale about a town that has too much power. The Day of Glory (2006) is a Hammer's Slammers story about recruiting cannon fodder. The Interrogation Team (1978) is a horror story about a Hammer's Slammers combat intelligence team gathering information from the enemy. A Death in Peace Time (2006) is another Hammer's Slammers tale about the death of Joachim Steuben. Dream in Amber (1985) is a tale of the short-lived Empire of Carausius in Roman Britain.

Safe to Sea (1988) is a story about a squadron of fighters lost in space. The Murder of Halley's Comet (1989) is a collaboration with Larry Niven about an attack on the solar system. The Hunting Ground (1976) is a horror tale about an alien vampire. The False Prophet (1989) is a Vettius story about his first contact with Dama and their investigation of the death of a philosopher. A Grand Tour (2006) is the original version of a story first published in More Than Honor (1988).

While the author has also written fantasy, these stories are all science fiction. Several of them are also horror within an SF setting. One reason for reading SF is that it can be combined with most other genres, including fantasy with appropriate scientific verbiage (see Gather, Darkness!).

Highly recommended for Drake fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed conflict, alien creatures, and human courage.
