I adore the author of this book. It is beautiful.
I work in an outdoor education setting with kids who may have not experienced the outdoors very much and this book I always read before beginning a nature based activity. I take them some place quiet outside away from everything and read to them. Then I have them sit and listen to nature and we talk about what they are hearing and how often we can go without noticing the sounds around us. This book helps to drive that point, about being patient and waiting to see the beauty that the natural world has to offer. If you have a classroom of stir crazy kids and you want to take them outdoors to experience nature, I stronly suggest that you read this to them because it really helps to focus.

One of my all time favorites,
This review is from: The Other Way to Listen (Paperback)
I have no words that do this justice. A buoyant, peaceful story of listening with the spirit as much as the manifest senses, it speaks to the stilly deep places of the soul. It's also gorgeously illustrated.

Another great book by Byrd Baylor. Her usual beautifully simple prose takes you to the American southwest. You can apply her lesson of quiet listening to anywhere you are in life, any location. She is again able to quiet your mind & spirit while you read. The illustrations are simple yet complex, drawing your imagination into focus. Combining Byrd's gift of writing with the illustrations, children & adults are reminded that we all should slow down so we may "hear" not only our world, but appreciate what we can learn from each other as well as reminding ourselves to draw peace from ourselves.

If you would like to teach a love of nature to a young person, Byrd Baylor's books are an excellent way to start. Insightful and sensitive, they are also an introduction to the Native American view of our world. Peter Parnell's art greatly enhances the stories.

I bought this book because it is by Byrd Baylor, who also wrote Everybody Needs a Rock. Both books use figurative illustrations to go along with the wonderful text.
This is great to use with elementary age students, but older kids would enjoy as well. The Other Way to Listen Everybody Needs a Rock (An Aladdin Book)
