Book Description

September 4, 2012

Jane Ryland was a rising star in television news…until she refused to reveal a source and lost everything. Now a disgraced newspaper reporter, Jane isn’t content to work on her assigned puff pieces, and finds herself tracking down a candidate’s secret mistress just days before a pivotal Senate election.

Detective Jake Brogan is investigating a possible serial killer. Twice, bodies of unidentified women have been found by a bridge, and Jake is plagued by a media swarm beginning to buzz about a “bridge killer” hunting the young women of Boston.

As the body count rises and election looms closer, it becomes clear to Jane and Jake that their cases are connected…and that they may be facing a ruthless killer who will stop at nothing to silence a scandal.

Dirty politics, dirty tricks, and a barrage of final twists, The Other Woman is the first in an explosive new series by Hank Phillippi Ryan. Seduction, betrayal, and murder—it’ll take a lot more than votes to win this election.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, timely mystery! July 2, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Boston TV investigator Jane Ryan lost her job for refusing to reveal her source. On the recommendation of her friend Detective Jake Brogan, she signs on to work for a secondary newspaper. Her first assignment is to locate and interview Moira Lassiter, wife of the former Governor and candidate for senate, who has disappeared from the campaign trail. She is stymied by Governor Lassiter's minions who either cannot or will not tell her where Moira is. Is there a scandal being covered up?
Jake Brogan is the lead detective on a series of killings of attractive young women. Their bodies have all been found under or near major bridges over rivers in the Boston area. None of them have any identification. He and his partner set out to find out who they are and who killed them. Several papers print stories referring to the deaths as serial killings by the Bridge Killer. Are they right?
Inadvertently, Jake and Jane find their investigations beginning to overlap. Is there another woman is Governor Lassiter's life? Are the killings related to his campaign?
Dirty tricks abound in the Senatorial campaign, initial suspects in the murders turn out to be false leads, and Jane and Jake find their investigations surprisingly intertwined. Both prose and dialog are handled well by Ms Ryan, and the plots are both realistic and engrossing. The plot almost could be taken from current campaign tactics - but the outcome is a surprise.
A great story. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Ryan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Guy! The Other Woman! Wrong Gal! August 12, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Other Woman is my first exposure to author Hank Phillippi Ryan, but it will not be my last. This 413-page mystery suspense novel was a quick read that was very hard to put down.

The vividly delivered storyline was a fantastic tale set in Boston, Massachusetts with two main facets. On one plane, former Governor Owen Lassiter is running a Senatorial race against wealthy Eleanor "Ellie" Mead Gable.

The Gable campaign is hoping that Governor Lassiter will self-destruct, but is willing to fuel the fire to win.

For some reason, the Governor's campaign manager, Rory Maitland is keeping, Owen's suspicious wife, Moira Kelly Lassiter in low profile during the campaign. It appears and she suspects he has become a philanderer with skeletons in his closet. On the other hand, the reader wonders whether political sabotage may be in play.

The second plane involves serial deaths or murders of young women found in the river. The press is convinced a serial killer is at large. As the story develops a total of four young dead women are pulled from the river. Much to the public's dismay, the Boston Police Department is yet to be convinced it is the work of one murderer.

The story begins with Channel 11, News television star, Jane Elizabeth Ryland losing her job after reporting Grocery Store Magnate Arthur Vick's affair with a high priced hooker. Determined to honor her decision and promise to not divulge her source, that source disappeared and Vick was successful in his million dollar slander judgment that led to her termination.

3.0 out of 5 stars The other what September 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a story about a disgraced reporter, who after having been fired from television news reporting after a million dollar judgment against her television station, has started a career as a reporter for a newspaper. This should have been a clue that there were going to be a huge number of unlikely events, as not only did the writer have to spend an inordinate amount of time explaining it, but it was an ongoing problem. Unlikely seemed to be a theme in this book, unlikely decisions, unlikely events, unlikely outcomes.

Jane (Janey to Jakey) seems to run all over the place, chasing stories her editor told her not to while not doing the stories she was supposed to, not answering questions, acting as other than a reporter. She seemed to vacillate between her off-limits crush, Jakey and her further off-limits, married boss, Hot Alex. This seemed a little teenage-ish.

In any case, there wouldn't be a reason for a reporter not to date a cop, let alone get fired for it, so it was one of those straw men set up to make the story feel like it had tension.

There were too many dei ex machina for me to enjoy this story. Unlikely events kept coming from the sky that made it seem like it was a lot of loose ideas for stories all being put together into one book. Not that there should have been more than one book, heavens no!

5.0 out of 5 stars Journalism at Its Best July 10, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Hank Phillippi Ryan's THE OTHER WOMAN presents an outstanding beginning for a new series.
Jane Ryland is a reporter who one wants to meet at this time when the national media has lost much of its creditability. Jane's career as a TV news personality hits the skids when she refuses to give up a source for a story and her station is sued for a million dollars.
After being fired by the station with the help from Detective Jake Brogan she lands a job with a Boston newspaper. The little cube is a long way down from her former office, but in these difficult times a job pays the rent.
Determined to claw her way back Jane finds interesting implications in the leaving the campaign trail of a senatoral candiates wife.
The tension builds as she discovers her interest in Det. Brogan is more than a business relationship, but one that if events continue to follow their course will not bring happiness, but disaster to her already broken professional life.
The bodies of young women keep turning up on the banks of the Charles River, the paper is fanning notion of a seriel killer, but Det. Brogan doesn't think the deaths are the work of a single killer.
THE OTHER WOMEN is a cover-to-cover read from start to a finsh that will leave you wanting more of Jane Ryland.
Nash Black, author of SANDPRINTS OF DEATH.
