Book Description

0415030862 978-0415030861 August 16, 1992
This bestselling Coursebook addresses the need for a systematic approach to training in translation studies by drawing on key areas in modern linguistic theory and relating them systematically to a number of translation problems and strategies. The strategies are identified by an examination of authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages. No knowledge of linguistics or foreign languages is assumed. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the key linguistic concepts referred to and ends with a series of practical exercises. By striking a balance between theory and practice, the book provides a sound basis for training professional translators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Translation Teachers Should Read This Book, November 19, 2003
This review is from: In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation (Paperback)
It is unfortunate that the only other reviewer of this book (so far, November 2003) has chosen to focus only on politics. As a teacher of translation, I have found Mona Baker's book to be invaluable, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has the somewhat thankless task of trying to teach an unteachable subject. For people who are trying to teach themselves some of the finer points of translation, this book is an excellent place to start, or pick up some pointers.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth reading, January 16, 2006
This review is from: In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation (Paperback)
It's a good general textbook on translation. The only drawback is that it makes too much reference to Arabic and Chinese, really interesting languages but not what I was expecting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not crazy about it, November 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation (Paperback)
Well, this book was written in 1992 ou 93? and since then a lot of things have changed in the world of translation. Now people use different softwares, websites, and so on... Had no idea the book was so outdated.
