5.0 out of 5 stars Translation Teachers Should Read This Book
It is unfortunate that the only other reviewer of this book (so far, November 2003) has chosen to focus only on politics. As a teacher of translation, I have found Mona Baker's book to be invaluable, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has the somewhat thankless task of trying to teach an unteachable subject. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not crazy about it
Well, this book was written in 1992 ou 93? and since then a lot of things have changed in the world of translation. Now people use different softwares, websites, and so on... Had no idea the book was so outdated.

As a teacher of translation, I have found Mona Baker's book to be invaluable, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has the somewhat thankless task of trying to teach an unteachable subject. For people who are trying to teach themselves some of the finer points of translation, this book is an excellent place to start, or pick up some pointers.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth reading, January 16, 2006
This review is from: In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation (Paperback)
It's a good general textbook on translation. The only drawback is that it makes too much reference to Arabic and Chinese, really interesting languages but not what I was expecting.

5.0 out of 5 stars great introductory book, October 4, 2011

It covers a lot of the problems you will encounter in the real world. The examples go beyond just standard languages and cover problems in the translation to more complicated languages.

I ordered this book last month and I am expecting it at the post tomorrow. Though I am yet to receive the book, the whole process of buying online was easy and user-friendly. Book recommended for practising translators. Thanks

1.0 out of 5 stars Politicized junk, September 18, 2005
This review is from: In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation (Paperback)
Ms. Baker's work suffers from her political extremism. She is well know for firing translators because they happened to be Israeli citizens, and calling on others to do so, and this animus is reflected in her work.
