Did you ever wonder if that pretty 13 year old girl was thinking about you while you were thinking about her? When 14 year old Jared falls from his bike into a swamp near his family's summer home, he discovers that he can read minds, and is able to tell how others see him, which is not always a good thing. Do you want to know that somebody thinks you never wash your face and that you act imbelcilic? Jared doesn't either. But Jared also learns why how somebody is breaking ATM codes around town, a feat possible if you can read minds. But if Jared isn't sneaking into people's minds and stealing their access codes then who is? Can somebody else read minds? Does somebody else know that Jared can read minds too? Others See Us is a story about the responsibility that comes with great power. Its a fun and fascinating read. William Sleator must have read my mind before he wrote this, because this is the kind of book I wanted to read

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a Sci-Fi Thriller, July 17, 2001
By
Others See Us is a Sci-Fi thriller about a boy who falls into a toxic swamp and learns the truth about many people he knows. For example he learns that his cousin, who he adored is actually a cheater and a murderer. The plot thickens when he finds out that his grandmother was responsible for several robberies by mind-reading people's security and PIN codes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, February 3, 2001
"Oh wad some power the giftie gie us. To see ourselves as other see us!"

Possibly one of the last Great Sleator Books, "Other See Us" takes us for a journey into the minds of others. This is an amazing story of seeing how other people see things and who and what they are inside.

Once again Great 1st person use. Sleator draws you into the story until you realize you are the story. You empathize so much with the character that this could easily be happening to you. This in my opinion is one of Sleator's greatest skills, to make his characters utterly realistic. Never before have I experienced real people in circumstances like these. It's Awsome.

A final not I sometimes forget to add to my Sleator reviews. Do not be fooled into thinking his books are JUST for young people. I've read ideas and concepts in his booksthat I wouldn't see in any Koontz or King

Anyway add this to your list of must have Sleators.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, August 8, 2003

I picked up this book because I had to read for school. Two pages into it and I was hooked. You'll like the main character Jared and love the grandmother. You'll hate the bad guy and won't be dissapointed in the ending (unless you like sad endings). If you like sci-fi and good vs. evil--this book of psychic abilities is definitley for you. I would say more about the story line but I was suprised when I read the real twist in the book and I liked it. One word--diary. Read this book for the diary section. You'll know. I loved reading this book and didn't want to put it down. I'm definitley going to buy more of Sleator's books. Peace.

This review is from: Others See Us (Hardcover)
Jared's summer vacation is not off to a good start. The brakes on his bike give out and he ends up falling into a toxic swamp near his summer home. He can barely wash the smell off of himself. Then things start to get strange for Jared. He finds that he can read the thoughts of the rest of his family members, all vacationing together near his grandmother's summer complex. Being able to read minds is interesting and useful at first, as he can see what his family members are really hiding. He is able to find out that his gorgeous cousin Annelise seems to return some of his passionate feelings, which thrills him. But his other cousin, Lindie, seems to have a real grudge against Annelise.

When Jared's secret journal and Annelise's secret journal are stolen from their hiding spots, Jared figures someone else at the family gathering must be able to read minds as well. He becomes even more convinced when he hears there have been robberies in the area where people's alarm codes have been used and their bank accounts have been emptied with their ATM cards. Someone who can read minds is on a crime spree.

More shocking than the news of the crimes, though, is the thoughts Jared is able to read from Annelise when she thinks about what she wrote in her secret journal--horrible things about Jared and the rest of the family. Will Jared and Annelise be able to get their journals back before embarrassing or damaging entries are read by everyone in the family?

The part of this book dealing with psychic powers was interesting. I liked that Jared was able to find out the truth about his relatives, and I liked Lindie's character, especially the fact that she was able to see through Annelise when nobody else did. However, the whole incest thing totally turned me off. There were no other cute girls in Jared's life? He really had to choose his own cousin as the object of his affection? What a terrible part of the plot!

2.0 out of 5 stars Kind of flat, September 25, 2005
By
I dont see why this book has such high reviews. I like Sleator normally, but this book lacking something that the other books Ive read by him dont; Marco's Millions, the Last Universe etc. A broader plot for one. And characters that I kind of care about. I find it hard to have empathy for these incest minded charaters. The only thing I got from the book is a strong desire to want to read minds!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, July 13, 2005
A very awesome book. REALLY GOOD! Well thought out and written. It's kind of atypical that all the "good" and "bad" characters are all in one extended family, and the title is not as good as it could be, but an important read for Sleator fans and SciFi readers in general.

4.0 out of 5 stars Others See Us, March 21, 2000
By A Customer
I thought this was a great book! It had a lot of detail without getting boring. Also it was intresting and went to topicsslower than some books. This made it easy to follow and not to confusing. The characters were very developed, so it was easy to relate to them. Somthing I didn't like about the book was that it didn't completly explain everything. It left me hanging. Even at the end it left things unanswered. Especially things about grandma. I really enjoyed the ending it was a big twist. I think the moral of the story was you cant judge a book by its cover, but in this story it was backward. I also loved all of the cliffhangers. So if you love suspense this is the book for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, June 16, 1999
By A Customer
This book, like other William Sleator books, had a great concept, but this one falls short of his others. When I read this book, I didn't get into it the way I got into his others - I didn't find it particularly compelling. I think it might have been charcter development that I found to be lacking. However, I think this book is worth reading for young adults because it is intelligent and it gives young people something to think about. Like other Sleator books, I find myself thinking about different aspects of the book, even years after reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is fast-pace, and exciting!!!, May 12, 1999
By A Customer
I read this book and I was amazed at how a book could hold such an amazing power over you. After the first 3 sentances, I got hooked on the fantasies, romance, and excitement. I deffanately recomend this book! It's top-notch!!! My favorite spot, is the most romantic, when Annelise(Jared's cousin) and Jared hold hands in the sand while they were waching fireworks.
