Not bad, July 30, 2006
This review is from: Otherside (Audio CD)
"Otherside" is the third single lifted off of the album Californication. It's a complex song that fuses dark, ominous themes with perfectly matched backing-vocals and superb drum playing (that can feel a little lagging at times). The song plays great, and instantly fills you with dark sensations. It's alright, and could be picked up on the album for more bang to your buck. This single is coupled with "How Strong" and "Road Trippin'" which has been stripped of its string section. "How Strong" is a song that feels dirty and somewhat lacking. It could be much better, and much less irritating, however you are rewarded with a very nice guitar solo from John that fits in beautifully. "Road Trippin'" is played here, minus the strings. It does make for an interesting listen, but, in the end, it isn't extremely exciting or worth while. I recommend this for collectors only.

GREAT ITEM!!, March 17, 2011
This review is from: Otherside (Audio CD)
Overall, it's a great buy. The single includes "Otherside", a big hit off of Californication. The reason to buy this is because of "How Strong". That song can't be bought anywhere else, I wish it could be so everyone could hear it. Any fan of RHCP will love that song and it's worth the money for the single. It also includes "Road Trippin' (Without Strings)", which is an nice raw version of Road Trippin' before the symphonic sounds are added. Finally, the Otherside "enhanced video" is included on the disc and is only viewable on a computer, and it's a very good video. If you are a real fan of RHCP, you need to have this.

Nice single, but get the import..., September 29, 2005
This review is from: Otherside (Audio CD)
"Otherside", the third single from "Californication", was released in two parts domestically and one part overseas. Given that it's now out of print, digging up the import makes more sense since it gets you all the material and is likely to cost less. The title track is one of the best songs on "Californication"-- a moody piece that in many ways points to the future, its a mellow piece with a chorus that becomes progressively more soaked in vocal harmonies, it lacks that sort of funk sound, but it has a great drive to it even though it sits midtempo-- Chad Smith's drumming is phrased ahead of the beat leaving a feeling of being pulled along. The b-sides on part 1 are "How Strong" and "Road Trippin'" without the string overdub. "How Strong" suffers from feeling like a b-side-- it's not a bad piece, but it kind of muddles along and isn't a particularly exciting performance (nice noisy, restrained guitar solo from John Frusciante though). "Road Trippin'", another of the great pieces from "Californication", is presented without the string overdubs. The piece loses some of its sense of drama without the strings, and I actually much prefer the overdubbed take. Nonetheless, it makes for an interesting listen. Regardless of quality though, it's hard to consider this one when the import has part 2's tracks as well. Find that one, it has much more value.
