3.0 out of 5 stars Good shoot em up for quick fun with a few flaws November 18, 2011
Platform for Display:Xbox 360| Edition:Special|Verified Purchase
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Length: 7:58 Mins
Watch the video demostration, I gave it an overall 3 out of 5 stars due to the multiplayer blunders of this game, however I enjoyed the single player very much

small recap
Pros
- old style shoot em up heaven
- plenty of characters to choose from with their own unique Platonic Breaks and weapons
- Upload and download replays from pros in case you get stuck
- Unlocks, weapon upgrades, images for the gallery and even 1 unlockable character

Cons
- local multiplayer bug, 2nd and 3rd player can move past a certain height in some levels
- multiplayer, 2nd and 3rd players have unlimited lives but have to wait for host player to reach certain areas to respawn
- if host player losses all his lives he gets thrown out to the main menu along with the 2nd and 3rd players so its Game Over for everyone.

Conclusion
if you are a shoot em up fan you will probably like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging although feels too fast November 4, 2011
By Ser
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Special
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I've played through all the Gradius titles (thanks to my PSP and PS2) and a little bit of R-Type (I picked up Final while waiting on this to come out to warm up). I've always been a fan of shooters (or shump as they're sometimes called) and picked this up simply because I'm always up for trying new ones (even though I'm not fond of the theme).

The game's menu itself is different in that the right analog stick also doubles as a mouse cursor. I still find it faster to navigate the menus using the left stick and rapidly picking choices rather than slowly dragging the cursor along the screen. My only complaint is that there isn't a record screen that I could find. The only way to know which level each character was would be to complete a game or get a game over (and exiting a game to my knowledge rewards no experience).

I originally played through the game in Story Mode on Normal difficulty. It was rather difficult but at the same time I was given unlimited continues through it so I was able to just push through the story rather quickly. Pace wise the game felt extremely fast compared to either R-Type or Gradius V. As soon as your character got shot off the screen (instead of blowing up) she would be quickly put back into action with little delay and given one power up to either use or save up. It shares traits of Gradius V in that Options are thrown out in front to be picked up by any player later. On the negative side in Gradius V during the invincibility I could go through walls to recover lost Options while here it isn't possible. The story felt rather short but at the same time Gradius V with the instant respawn disabled and R-Type take forever when stuck in certain areas with no powerups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do you like anime? December 7, 2011
Platform for Display:Xbox 360| Edition:Special|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
By far the best SHMUP with big boobs ever released in America on the Xbox! Really, it's awesome, if you like SMHUP's that are not too hard, and jiggly breasts. Did I mention the jiggly breasts? They are great. Also the soundtrack may even surpass the game in sheer incredible awesomeness. And if you can find three people to play, the game just gets more epic!

2.0 out of 5 stars Want a disc-based shmup for 360? Move on ... November 29, 2012
By jSten
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Special
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
The 360 is an awesome console for shmups, with some of the best modern examples of the genre. I've got every disc-based shmup available for 360 in Japan and North America. And I have to say, if I did it all again, this would be among my last choices to buy.

There are two Otomedius games for the 360: Gorgeous and Excellent. Gorgeous never made it to North America, however Excellent is the newer game and is slightly better in my opinion.

At first, Otomedius Excellent brings forth memories of the great Konami shmups. Ship designs and shot types are very reminiscent of Gradius, twisted and super deformed similar to the Parodius series. Enemies can be cute, silly, and sometimes nonsensical. But don't let them fool you, as everything is out to kill you. And yea, there's big busted women dressed in impractical outfits.

The biggest problem with Excellent is the level design. There are some boring stretches of not much going on. Stage layout lacks the aggressive punch that I've learned to expect in Konami shmups, as very rarely do I feel pressured here. Color choices are very poor as well. For example, one section features a neon yellow background, with an enemy that fires a yellow laser that's completely invisible until it hits you. Boss fights are big and have some nifty introductions, however once the battle starts there isn't much to them.

Challenge is also an issue. On default settings, I got a one credit clear (no contines) after only a few tries. Experienced shmup players will likely need to crank up the difficulty for the game to put up any fight at all.

On the plus side, if you enjoy unlocking new ships and weapons, Excellent is quite good in that aspect. A full unlock takes a very long time to achieve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little spaceship/R-type style shooter. :) January 25, 2013
Platform for Display:Xbox 360| Edition:Special|Verified Purchase
If you are from the generation of people that were kids in the 1980s, you remember R-Type. That was one of the first Japanese arcade/spaceship shooting games (side-scrollers) out there. I sure did, even though I hated R-Type (it was too freakin' hard!).Then we had Gradius come out for PS1 and PS2 and that was an improvement from R-Type.

Now we have moved 20+ years since R-Type and they used 3D technology to create an anime-style shooter game that is actually a lot more fun and not as excruciatingly hard. There are many anime characters to choose from and each one has their own unique Platonic Breaks and weapons (special attacks and such). Also, it has a very light RPG/upgrades for unlocks, weapon improvements, CG images for a gallery, and of course, as with any Japanese game. it has one extra unlockable character. There are some minor bugs in the game, especially on the multiplayer, but nothing that freezes up and causes complete shutdowns, just tiny glitches and game collectors/addicts will notice, but won't bother most.

It comes with "naughty" anime pillows as a bonus, which I think the wife would frown upon, but it is all good, they can stay in the box. LOL It also comes with 35 "soundtracks" on a CD, which is fun. I wish there was an art book, as the character development would be better there, but no big deal - still a great thing to get some "Extras" in the game box.

If you like shoot 'em up games (side scrollers), that are old school and with some more modern features and reasonable difficulty, this is a great game. You will enjoy it and at 20-bucks or less, you cannot go wrong here.
