3.0 out of 5 stars TRUE JULIETA FAN
I love Julieta, but I was disappointment with this CD. I still managed to find a couple of tracks I liked.

Born in Tijuana, México, Julieta began studying music at 10 years of age, mastering musical composition and vocal performance, as well as several musica instruments, including guitar, cello, accordion, percussion, piano and keyboards. Julieta has been a 3 time MTV music/video award winner, and has taken home no less than 5 Grammy awards for her previous efforts.
"Otra Cosa" is her 6th studio release, and 8th album release all told, including the 2007 collection "Realmente lo Mejor" (really the best), and her 2008 MTV Unplugged live performance release (not including contributions she has made to recordings released by other artists and the song she contributed to the soundtrack of the film, Maria Full of Grace).
On one hand, with the name "Otra Cosa" ([an]Other Thing in English), one might expect something a little different, something surprising and new.
The truth is, however, that Julieta has not, in this latest disc, deviated from the path that has already made her a great success.
Of course, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
"Otra Cosa" is replete with the same well-crafted, catchy, smart tunes we've come to expect from Mexican pop-star and super-cutie, Julieta Venegas. It's GREAT music with catchy, witty, fun, heartfelt, and often insightful lyrics.
Existing fans will NOT be disappointed, no horrific departures from the known or unpleasant suprises. Just the same great stuff.
When those new to Julieta's music hear what they've been missing, they will be wondering why they hadn't already become fans long ago.
For those who are new to Julieta's great, latin-american, alt-pop tunes, I also highly recommend her prior albums, Bueninvento, , Limón y Sal, and, of course, her live/acoustic disc, MTV Unplugged. From the MTV disc, especially don't miss the great songs she recorded with Brazilian pop-legend, Marisa Monte (two such beautiful, talented singers on stage together = w0w!).

4.0 out of 5 stars good but not as good as limon y sal, April 19, 2010

I love Julieta Venegas and her new album is very good, more laid back with a little less of the "pop" sound that I seemed to have really enjoyed on her previous album limon y sal but still a very good CD. I would recommend it- tunes are good and she always delivers!!! Bueno!

3.0 out of 5 stars A LITTLE BORING..., May 15, 2010
This review is from: Otra Cosa (Audio CD)
I am a big fan of Julieta, and even though this is a good album, I have to say it is probably the worst in her career. After listening to it a few times, I just wanted to go back and play Limon y Sal or other previous albums. We would like to see "sweat" Julieta, and less "sweet" Julieta. I just hope that the experience of being a mother will fill her soul with new experiences to share with her audience, instead of pushing her more to a comfort zone.

This CD was great! My ex introduced her music to me. Our song (Sal Y Limon) was one from her previous releases. At first, it was a little hard re-listening to her after the breakup, but her unique and creative style of music couldn't keep me from wanting more. I am very please to continue listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well crafted music, April 21, 2011

I love every track on this CD! The lyrics of each song have a beautiful, unexpected poetry, and I appreciate that Julieta writes most of the music herself. I personally think this is the best of her CDs along with MTV Unplugged. It still fairly easy listening, but the majority of songs have more depth than the pop hits on Limon y Sal. I'm still discovering new aspects of every song with repeat listenings. If you've never heard the songs of Julieta, you're in for a treat!

She is a pleasure to listen to, even though I don't understand most of the lyrics! Her performance and voice are both angelical! Definitely one of the best music CDs coming from modern Latin America.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sin duda - el mejor álbum del año, September 3, 2010
This review is from: Otra Cosa (Audio CD)
I have been a big fan of her music for about 5 years or so. I love every album she has ever made. I've been listening to this cd constantly for the past 5 months or so, and it is perfect. The songs all have a catchy beat and good lyrics. She also speaks nice and clear, which is great if practicing Spanish. Songs cover a wide spectrum of sounds and genres, I'm a big fan of the accordeon sound. Beautiful disk, probably my favorite so far by her, even though you can't go wrong. Best I've heard so far this year for sure, English or Spanish. Can't believe so many people don't know about her.

I'm a fan of hers. I was fascinated by the original sound, somewhat odd lirycs and offbeat rhythms or her earlier productions, considered by critics (which I'm not) "alternative" ("Bueninvento" and "Aqui"), and continue to enjoy the now more pop quality of her current creations, like "Si" and this one, "Otra Cosa", which is excellent. She still maintains a unique sound that is delightful and very fun to listen to. I'm only missing "Limón y Sal". Love her music overall.
