Editorial Reviews

Singer -songwriter and Grammy winner Julieta Venegas, will release her new album Otra Cosa ( Something Else ) this March. Otra Cosa showcases 12 songs filled with acoustic and electric guitars, synthesizers, various percussion instruments, cavaquinhos, woodwinds, subtle pianos (played by herself) and, of course, unmistakable accordions, a trademark of the Mexican artist. This is an even and cheerful album with catchy melodies made to be heard at home. "Otra Cosa" encourages the listener to let the record play without changing it or skipping songs. As she explains, it's a very "homely" album. In this new work, Julieta participates not only as a singer but also as the Producer. She gradually directed each of the processes required to make a quality record. From the song selection, songwriting, and arrangements, to scheduling various collaborations from different musicians and artists. "I began the songwriting and arrangement process at home, composing on the piano, and later going to my music room, where I started recording with the idea of trying things. Many ended up on the album, which I love, because it was something very homely, without the pressure of being in the studio, but instead in the quiet of my home," says Julieta. Julieta wrote the 12 songs included in this album, in which she reflects her maturity as an artist and her strong wish to take her music to the next plateau. Some of the songs feature the collaboration of important musical figures such as Ale Sergi (Miranda!), Dárgelos Adrián (Babasonicos) and Cachorro López (also producer album). The album was recorded during the fall of 2009 and continued through the first weeks of 2010. "I came to write about 40 songs, among which I did in my house, and later in Buenos Aires, where I got together to write with Ale Sergi and Adrian Dárgelos. Two of the songs made it in the album: "Bien o Mal" ("Right or Wrong"), written with Ale, and "Under my Tongue", written with Adrian. Ale also sang background vocals on "Bien o Mal", I think he is a genius at arranging vocals, and I invited him to participate in the album," says Julieta. Why the title "Otra Cosa"? Julieta reveals the question everyone is asking her: "I think every moment we live is something different. Different from the previous one because everything happens is different times, and we are different from every moment of our lives. Therefore nothing is repeated: even if things happen as we are not the same. This is another thing, is another time of my life where I'm not the person I was before, nor I will be more forward." The new material comes after 12 months without touring or live shows, time that Julieta devoted to write songs. This is why this record is a relief for the thousands of screaming fans that have requested new songs through the different websites "I started with the idea of this album around in March 2009. Not so much on the concept of the entire album, but I started writing songs, locked in my house in total tranquility. For several years I spent time touring so this time was important to me, mostly to relax, read, listen to music, and write in peace." Due to her global success, "Otra Cosa" will go on sale in March in all countries of Latin America, U.S., Spain, Switzerland and Italy. Julieta Venegas is one of Mexico's most acclaimed artists in the music business. Keep in mind; this album is something else ...

5.0 out of 5 stars ¡SUPER! March 16, 2010
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Born in Tijuana, México, Julieta began studying music at 10 years of age, mastering musical composition and vocal performance, as well as several musica instruments, including guitar, cello, accordion, percussion, piano and keyboards. Julieta has been a 3 time MTV music/video award winner, and has taken home no less than 5 Grammy awards for her previous efforts.
"Otra Cosa" is her 6th studio release, and 8th album release all told, including the 2007 collection "Realmente lo Mejor" (really the best), and her 2008 MTV Unplugged live performance release (not including contributions she has made to recordings released by other artists and the song she contributed to the soundtrack of the film, Maria Full of Grace).
On one hand, with the name "Otra Cosa" ([an]Other Thing in English), one might expect something a little different, something surprising and new.
The truth is, however, that Julieta has not, in this latest disc, deviated from the path that has already made her a great success.
Of course, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
"Otra Cosa" is replete with the same well-crafted, catchy, smart tunes we've come to expect from Mexican pop-star and super-cutie, Julieta Venegas. It's GREAT music with catchy, witty, fun, heartfelt, and often insightful lyrics.
Existing fans will NOT be disappointed, no horrific departures from the known or unpleasant suprises. Just the same great stuff.
When those new to Julieta's music hear what they've been missing, they will be wondering why they hadn't already become fans long ago.
For those who are new to Julieta's great, latin-american, alt-pop tunes, I also highly recommend her prior albums, com/Bueninvento-Julieta-Venegas/dp/B00004WFNZ">Bueninvento, , Limón y Sal, and, of course, her live/acoustic disc, MTV Unplugged. From the MTV disc, especially don't miss the great songs she recorded with Brazilian pop-legend, Marisa Monte (two such beautiful, talented singers on stage together = w0w!).

4.0 out of 5 stars good but not as good as limon y sal April 19, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love Julieta Venegas and her new album is very good, more laid back with a little less of the "pop" sound that I seemed to have really enjoyed on her previous album limon y sal but still a very good CD. I would recommend it- tunes are good and she always delivers!!! Bueno!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 estrellas profundas June 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album May 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Julieta Venegas is a Latin singer/song writer who has move of an India Arie vibe to her music which I call easy listening. But nonetheless she is a great singer. This album is wonderful.

3.0 out of 5 stars A LITTLE BORING... May 15, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I am a big fan of Julieta, and even though this is a good album, I have to say it is probably the worst in her career. After listening to it a few times, I just wanted to go back and play Limon y Sal or other previous albums. We would like to see "sweat" Julieta, and less "sweet" Julieta. I just hope that the experience of being a mother will fill her soul with new experiences to share with her audience, instead of pushing her more to a comfort zone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! September 15, 2010
Format:Audio CD
This CD was great! My ex introduced her music to me. Our song (Sal Y Limon) was one from her previous releases. At first, it was a little hard re-listening to her after the breakup, but her unique and creative style of music couldn't keep me from wanting more. I am very please to continue listening.
