4.0 out of 5 stars Good light but swivel action could have been more smoother
I bought this lamp to have a well lit surface to do my needle work and other hobby craft . It gives out good light and is easy to assemble.I am happy with my purchase to that end. Also, it is esthetically appealing and I have received many a compliments on it. I have knocked off one star for this product because I was hoping the up-down swivel mechanism to be more user...

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor choice in lamp--engineered poorly
I purchased this lamp a few years ago and was very happy with it until just recently. You see, the arm that holds the light bulb is rather heavy and it attaches to the pole that goes to the floor with a very flimsy connection. After a few years of use, and I never adjusted it, so it never had much activity on the part, the part that connects the arm to the pole broke...

I bought this lamp to have a well lit surface to do my needle work and other hobby craft . It gives out good light and is easy to assemble.I am happy with my purchase to that end. Also, it is esthetically appealing and I have received many a compliments on it. I have knocked off one star for this product because I was hoping the up-down swivel mechanism to be more user friendly . Currently , it has a screw at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical arms that needs to be unscrewed , the vertical bar needs to be adjusted for orientation and then tighten the screw .This is a bit cumbersome when you are holding your needlepoint and want to adjust the light simultaneously. Overall, 8/10 for this product.

I purchased this lamp a few years ago and was very happy with it until just recently. You see, the arm that holds the light bulb is rather heavy and it attaches to the pole that goes to the floor with a very flimsy connection. After a few years of use, and I never adjusted it, so it never had much activity on the part, the part that connects the arm to the pole broke! You can see that it just wore through. And like I said, I never moved the lamp once I put it together and had it in the place I wanted it. So you may think it would be easy to fix? Well, not so fast. I had all my paperwork, so I called the company. OK, I'm outside of the warranty period. So for them to fix it, would cost too much. I can fix it myself, right? I copied the assembly instructions, and sent them to my 'customer service' rep with the part circled that I need. Well, guess what? She sent me that part, but it was missing an important connection section, so I still could not connect the arm to the pole. Called again. They'd send me the missing part. Got the 'missing part' only it has nothing to do with what I needed, and in fact would not even fit into the part of the lamp that was broken! Called again. They have no idea what I need, and can't help me....needless to say, that will be my last Ott-Lite. The lamp is now out in the garage, ready to put out with the trash next trash day. I spent a lot of money on this lamp, more than it is for sale here, and I would say it was not a purchase worth the cost.

I purchased this light to use for rug hooking and I really love the lamp overall. The ability to see color clearly is important to me and having a lamp that does not look like a craft lamp was also a reason I purchased this particular model. The only disappointment was that the top screw was defective and would not screw in correctly. My husband had to purchase a new screw, cut it, and attach it to the lamp with a wing nut...not my idea of aesthetics at all, although he was sweet and colored the wing nut with a sharpie so it does not stand out terribly. Since I purchased online, I really did not want to deal with the hassle of a return and my husband (an engineer) said it was pretty clear that this was more of a manufacturing issue, and getting a second lamp might not solve the problem...so, although I initially was pretty upset over the defect, I have to admit I love the lamp and it fits my needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ott-lite Pharmacy Floor Lamp, September 18, 2010

This gives great task lighting for my needle work. It's not meant to be used as ambient lighting.

It is attractive and was easy to assemble. I've been keeping it in the same position to use when I'm sitting and I twist the nice heavy base to swing it over my work. The price was excellent.

Purchased this lamp and received it at the beginning of March, 2010. Has seen VERY light use in the last two months since I received it, and the arm fell off the upright today when I was swinging the lamp head over a piece of work on my desk.

The joint where the lamp broke is a casting that is a hollow ball with the screw hole extended. The screw hold broke out of the hopllow ball, so it can't be repaired except by replacing the arm, which means completely rewiring the lamp. Upon close examination of the part that broke out, it is clear that this is a flaw in the casting, as the broken edge reveals voids in the metal work. I've seen more solid swiss cheese!

Can't recommend this product as anything other than trash filler. Would give it zero stars if that were an option.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lightbulb, May 27, 2010

I wanted a vintage pharmacy lamp and this is the cheapest and closest option I can get. It is a beautiful lamp, the antique brass finish is beautiful.

However, it is only beautiful BEFORE you turn the lamp on. The light bulb included is a fluorescent-like daylight white, not a warm yellow that you would expect from an antique design like this. I felt like I was at a sewing factory. If you don't care about the decor of the house, or if you genuinely want a reading white light, this would work, but do not buy this if you expect it to give a warm tone to your room.

I wanted to see if there are warmer options. The bulb is an unconventional plug-in one. My husband, without knowing it, thought it was a twist on. He twisted, cracked and broke the bulb. The bulb literally shattered and since he was looking up into the "bowl" area some glass/mercury dust from the bulb went into his eye. Luckily he is OK, but keep in mind the bulb can be easily broken and when it breaks it shatters into pieces. Be careful if you have young kids at your home who may be able to reach the bulb.

The problem with the bulb is, it is an unconventional design. We went to every store (fry's, home depot, lowe's, you name it) and can not find a replacement for it. It has to be the exact same bulb it seems (which means there is no "warmer tone" option), and not many stores carry it. We bought bulbs that has a similar socket (2 diagonal pins and a socket) but none of them fit. Up until now we still haven't found a replacement.

If you only want a vintage-looking lamp with mismatched fluorescent-like white light, never plan to replace the bulb and don't have kids, then this is for you. Otherwise, I don't recommend it at all. I'd rather buy a more expensive lamp, or a different design that has a universal bulb socket.
