Originally, I saw this lighting concept [true color lite] on display in a retail store. The light was part of a side by side demonstration where you could read material illuminated by both this light and a conventional light bulb.
The difference was startling. The Ott-light was soft, glare free and the printed material was easier to read by an order of magnitude. Colors were natural and pleasing, printed material even appeared more clearly / more sharp. I could hardly believe my tired old eyes.
I needed a good light for my computer desk so I took a chance and ordered this one via the internet.
When I received the light and began using it at my computer station I was startled at how really good it is. Sure, the fixture is extremely well made and is easily adjustable, but more importantly the light was simply perfect for use around computer monitors. What a pleasant surprise ... a product that delivers real quality.
That is when I realized the primary reason I did so little work at my regular desk was my old hot glaring incadencent desk lamp. The old style lamp made working difficult. It was difficult to adjust, everything had a yellow cast, the glare on glossy material was horrible and it gave off a lot of heat.
When my second new Ott-Lite Executive Desk Lamp arrives in a day or two that old desk lamp is headed for the garage sale.
It has been a long time since I have been so totally satisfied with a purchase. If I had not seen it for myself, I would have never believed it. I'm going to be selling a lot of these for this company when friends come over and see this light.
I've owned an OttLite before, specifically the OttLite L18336 18W Crane/Desk Lamp.
I literally just opened it and took it out of the box.
Assembly is very easy (although pushing the bulb into its socket was a little scary - you have to put a little more force than you normally would on a piece of glass).
The light it gives off is very good. One complaint I do have is that when I flip it on, it flickers for about a second. I never had that with my old OttLite (I've had the old one for 10 years now). It's not such a big deal. Maybe the bulb needs some time. We'll see.
I've seen reviews saying that this is made in Taiwan - nope, sorry. Made in China. The lamp and the bulb.
The base is heavy enough to hold the lamp very sturdily; I'm not afraid that it'll fall over.
The main screw holds the bar very well, so it holds its position unless you really give it a tug. It'll probably give a little over time, but so far I'm confident.
An interesting design point: at the head, there is spring which doesn't allow for complete maneuverability. It keeps the lamp head up, which is a little frustrating.
The base of the lamp doesn't stay in place very well - the pads on the bottom are too smooth. However, my desk is against a wall, so it shouldn't be a problem - I'm not concerned about it falling off the table. The weight of the base keeps it from moving too much.
The light, as I've come to expect from OttLite, is very good. Clear, crisp, white. And yes, this is a desk lamp, it won't light up your room.
All in all, a good purchase, I think. We'll see how it stands the test of time and I'll update then if necessary.
Update (02/14/12): Still holding strong. The light continues to flicker when I turn it on. Not a huge deal, but a little bit of a nuisance. I am continuing to enjoy the light.
I've since purchased Ott desk lamps and use them at my office and home, and I have Ott floor lamps in both places including by the bedside for reading at night.
In my experience over this period of several years I am convinced that the Ott bulbs do produce very natural lighting for comfortable reading and I am completely satisfied with them. I have also had no problems with any of my Ott products (2 desk lamps and 3 floor lamps), either with respect to the quality of the lamps or lifespan of the bulbs. (I therefore have no experience with Ott customer support because I have not had reason to make use of it).
The only downside to these products as far as I am concerned is that the bulbs and lamps are made to fit each other and you therefore need to purchase replacement Ott bulbs, which of course are not cheap. I would not use them for every light in the house for that reason, but for those lamps that are primarily for reading, they are my preference.
I have found it difficult to precisely compare the Ott products to other lamps that make similar claims. On a couple of occasions I noticed that there are several other lamps available that may be as good or better, but I have been unable to satisfy myself as to whether or not this is the case.Read more ›
