Product Description

Read without eyestrain and see colors true-to-life The OttLite 18-Watt Crane Desk Lamp features an adjustable arm that positions over your desk, table or workspace to perfectly illuminate the precise area you want lit up. Enjoy High Definition Natural Lighting that allows you to read more easily for longer periods and see greater details without placing added strain on your eyes. The Crane Desk Lamp is great for avid readers as well as graphic designers, hobbyists (including needle workers) and anyone who would benefit from getting true, accurate color matching. The included energy efficient 18wHD tube is rated to last up to 10,000 hours. Height: 29. Lamp head measures 12 x 3. Base diameter is 8-3/4. Color: Black/Chrome. About OttLite 508 Technology... When it comes to lighting, brighter isn't always better. Bright light sources reveal vibrant colors but also cause a harsh glare, causing the eye muscles to squint. Other light sources reveal high contrast so that edges of objects appear clear, but the drawback is distorted color. Also, the more intense the light, the more energy is used, generating more heat. OttLite offers a unique solution to this problem. OttLite lighting is expertly engineered with 508 technology to bring the quality of High Definition Natural Lighting indoors, providing the ideal balance of brightness and contrast. The result is reduced glare, less eyestrain, and low heat. Compare an OttLite side by side with an ordinary light and the result ...

Ott-Lite's VisionSaver Lamps are designed to bring the visual acuity of natural daylight to your desk or workspace, without glare (or installing a skylight), in an effort to minimize eyestrain and discomfort. While everyone can appreciate less reflective glare on computer screens, graphic designers will be especially grateful for this light's ability to make details and colors appear clearer, thanks its low heat and high contrast.

With a double-jointed neck that can rotate to illuminate large areas, the crane lamp features counterbalancing tension springs and a weighted base for stability. The head swings horizontally and adjusts vertically for precise lighting. The lamp can be converted to a clamp-on model for those who need every last inch of desk space. The included 18-watt bulb is rated to last 10,000 hours, replacing up to a 100-watt incandescent for energy savings.

I haven't broken any parts yet and hope not to.

It snapped because the wire is held in place by s small steel barrel, which fits inside a small receptacle incorporated in that lower center piece.

This lamp was listed as a computer aid but I've seen it listed in all of the sewing magazines that I receive. It is worth every penny that I paid for it. It is large enough that I can rotate it between my craft table and my sewing machine. The light is bright and does not heat the room like some of the halogen lights that I've used. What's even better, it does not distort the fabric colors. I've even used it for matching accessory colors! The brightness and clarify makes tearing stitches out of dark colors a breeze. This lamp is definitely a necessity for anyone who sews or crafts.

I have had this lamp since 2004. In 2007, the wire in back snapped loose. This wire runs upward from the center piece between the bottom legs to the center piece between the lower and upper legs. It snapped because the wire is held in place by s small steel barrel, which fits inside a small receptacle incorporated in that lower center piece. Unfortunately this part is ill-designed because it lacks sufficient metal to counteract the force exerted by the wire. In 2007 Ott-Lite replaced the part and I successfully installed it. Now (January 2011) the metal of this new part gave way again and just like the first one, just broke off. You can see where the metal gave way. It is just poorly designed. I called Ott-Lite and they are not sure they have spare parts of which they could send me one. I am waiting!!!!! Very strange because they are still selling the lamps per their web-site. Unless I hear soon I am going to have to look for an alternative.

I am a computer professional, after a whole day of working on my computer, I come home and read for hours. My eyes were killing me until I changed lamps. Now I can read into the night and I don't get headaches. What a difference! Thank's Dr. Ott my eyes and I thank you.

Excellent lamp, nice light output. Arm appears flimsy but actually supports lamp quite well. Ballast is in a separate "wall-wart" that does take up a lot of outlet bar space.

Pricey but you get what you pay for. I've been through 2 of the "cheap-os" before buying this one. I'd buy one again.

My Ott-Lite crane lamp had an arm and fixture which sagged under its own weight (which is light) when extended. That problem was not fatal as it was possible, though not particularly easy, to adjust. However, the flourescent lamp would not work unless I held it up or pressed it inside the fixture. The fixture came with one page of instructions on how to install the flourescent lamp - but nothing else. Simple on-off switch; no dimming.
Most of the fixture was manufactured in Taiwan with the Ott-Lite flourescent lamp itself made in Thailand. The appearance of the fixture is satisfactory, but quality control is obviously a problem. Very flashy box!
All in all, a disappointment. Better crane lamps can be had at less than half the price.

The lamp is attractive, very stable thanks to a heavy base, and the light output is very natural (close to noon sunlight) and evenly spread. The lamp arm actually stays where you stretch it, which is unusual for desk lamps. Unfortunately, the lamp arm friction knobs are fragile, and break easily.

I bought this lamp in about 1993, used it for editing (all day, every day) until I retired in 2007, and have used it for at least a few hours daily in the five years since then. It just now gave up the ghost, and I'd say it doesn't owe me anything after 19 years. I'm ordering a new one.
I don't recall ever changing the bulb, either, so that too is a long-distance runner.

I should have read the review first, but as others have mentioned, the head of the lamp sags. This is because the screw is made of plastic and as time pass, the plastic wears out and it no longer do its work as a screw. I tried tightening it several times but even when it is at the tightest, it sags. Now, because I have tightened it several times, the screw head because it is such a poor quality soft plastic, the head is messed up from the screw driver. I spent $98.00 on it and very disappointed.
