I came across Ott products (including a desk lamp very similar to this model) a few years ago and was attracted by the claim that the light spectrum produced by the bulb is the closest to natural light and therefore more healthy (and producing less eye-strain) than more common incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.

I've since purchased Ott desk lamps and use them at my office and home, and I have Ott floor lamps in both places including by the bedside for reading at night.

In my experience over this period of several years I am convinced that the Ott bulbs do produce very natural lighting for comfortable reading and I am completely satisfied with them. I have also had no problems with any of my Ott products (2 desk lamps and 3 floor lamps), either with respect to the quality of the lamps or lifespan of the bulbs. (I therefore have no experience with Ott customer support because I have not had reason to make use of it).

(A comment regarding their customer support based upon my reading of other customer reviews here on Amazon. I have noticed that Ott customer support has individually responded - via "comments" - to many if not all of the negative customer reviews posted to their products here on Amazon, asking that the persons who have had a bad experience contact Ott so that their problems could be corrected. That is something that I have not noticed with other products and suggests to me that they are really paying attention to customer feedback and want to provide good customer support. Based on that I would expect problems to be handled by them in a very good way. It would be helpful if other Amazon customers who have initially had a bad experiences, but subsequently contacted Ott as the company has suggested, could provide an update to their reviews so that others can see how the issues were handled and hopefully resolved).

The only downside to these products as far as I am concerned is that the bulbs and lamps are made to fit each other and you therefore need to purchase replacement Ott bulbs, which of course are not cheap. I would not use them for every light in the house for that reason, but for those lamps that are primarily for reading, they are my preference.

I have found it difficult to quantitatively compare the Ott products to other lamps that make similar claims (Verilux being perhaps the main example). I have been unable to satisfy myself as to whether or not Ott is superior or even different from these others, and I do not have personal experience with any of the competitors to Ott. I do know that when I went to the Ott website to see what information was available on the light spectrum of the light produced by the bulbs, so that I could attempt to make a comparison of the light quality for the Ott bulbs vs their competitors, I could not find that information available from them (yes, I am an engineer). I also did not find such information on the Verilux website. If I am able to come across such a comparison, I will update this review to include it.

Very good lamps for reading use and I feel very comfortable in recommending them.

Second one and still not top quality. The light bulb is too heavy for the shade to stay in one position. I simply cannot use this beautiful lamp. It is perfect, however if the shade does not stay where I want it, it is of no use to me.

I have 4 of these lamps for about two years with no problem. The decor fits any room. I love the light, no glare off my glasses and no more tired eye when I get engrossed in my favorite book.

I gave two of thsse as gifts to my nephew and niece for them to take to college. They go to school up north and in the winter when daylight is scarce, I thought these would be a real treat. They love them and my niece gave on to her friend as a gift.

I HIGHLY recommend this product for anyone who does reading or sits at a desk for long hours!

I own this table model OttLite lamp and 3 floor models. Don't buy them. They are very attractive and give off good light, but they are poorly engineered and you will have problems. Like the people who have written reviews on other sites, I find that the bulbs just fall out. They shatter. They are very expensive to replace. In addition, the stand of the lamp is inadequately screwed into the base. No matter how tight you try to make it, it won't go in deeply. You will find that after moving the lamp a few times to clean, it won't stand straight anymore and it will eventually will fall over in pieces. I have the impression these lamps were designed by interior decorators without the help of electrical engineers or even electricians. A very pretty but frustrating and ultimately useless product.

The plastic that covered the weight at the base was broken badly. After returning them once and receiving three I gave up and sent them all back. They need to find a better material to cover the base. Shipment was fast and on time, but I wonder how they where handled on the way here. I am not sure about the working part of the lamp never got that far.

The lamp itself is fine, but the base is poorly designed and low quality. They use a plastic disk filled with masonry for the base. On the first one I received, the base was completely shattered into pieces. When they shipped out a new one, the masonry was intact but had broken away from the rest of the lamp, and the plastic casing was shattered. I decided to keep the second one and fix it myself as I am tired of returning and waiting. This resulted in an additional $10.00 spent at the hardware store and an hour or so of my time.

I ordered this lamp for my office twice. The first one came and the base was hsattered. The plastic was falling out of the package before we even cut it open.Same as the other reviewer...the material inside the base (some sort of plaster) was also shattered into tiny pieces. I figured it may have been a fluke as Amazon is always pretty perfect with its merchandise so I ordered another to replace it. I got the second one before I even had the chance to ship the first one back (thanks Prime!) and it had exactly the same problem. So now I have 2 shattered lamps sitting on the table waiting for UPS. Amazon was great about the return and refund, but don't bother ordering this particular lamp.

Ottlite in general is a fabulous product...I have 2 other lamps and they are great. You can also go straight to the ottlite site and order from their scratch & dent section. I got 2 lamps for about $50 each which were originally $150-$250 each. The only thing wrong with them was a problem with the shade on one. Replaced the shade and was good to go...saved like $200 all told.

While the original packaging was in perfect condition, the lamp was not. The shade was all out of shape and the material used for weight in the base was in a million small pieces. I sent it back for refund.
