The two most popular materials in smartphone casing are the Hard Plastic type (polycarbonates, etc) and the Rubbery silicone type. Each has its pros and cons. The hard plastic generally feels and fits better and they can be thinner, while giving less protection. The rubbery silicone cases give maximum protection for its size but they easily collect pocket lints, loose their shape fairly quickly, and never look classy.

Otter's 2-layers design (almost) gets the best of both world.

One silicone layer goes underneath to hug your Blackberry and provide 'extensions' to your buttons (volumes, standby) and a second (very thin) hard and crispy plastic goes on top of the first layer to provide a very smooth surface and keeps the silicone in place.

Pros:
- Fits VERY well.
- Best of both world: thick silicone protection underneath with smooth and clean polycarbonate outer shell.
- The silicone layer provides button 'extensions' so they don't get buried under the casing. VERY EASY to hit all the side and top buttons.
- Silicone plugs for all the plugs keep dirt (and water splashes) off.
- All black look.

Cons:
- Adds considerable amount of thickness.
- Can be hard to put on. (Hint: Concentrate on left and top-part first)
- Takes awhile to remove in case you need to hard reset (Hint: You can reboot your BB with the following key combo: ALT, right-shift and DELETE)

I am one of those that drops phones all the time. This is my new 9900 Bold and the last one for my old phone worked perfectly. Due to the plastic shiny outside, it is perfect for those who place in pocket when not in use. It does not have the issues with the rubber one that sticks. Best case!!!!

The case itself is nice. Provides good protection and feels well made and comfortable to hold but........... I experimented with the case on and with the case off and when the case is on the phone, the speaker is very fuzzy and callers claim my voice sounds muffled. Without the case, the fuzziness disappears on both the speaker and the microphone. Those are deal breakers for me when considering a case for a cell phone. I believe the case covers the microphone enough to muffle my voice and there is a loose, uneven fit around the speaker. It's a shame because I really like the look and feel of the case and would have loved to be able to use it. It may be just this one example. I've had Otterbox Commuter cases on other phones and have never had a problem whatsoever.

This is another great case from Otterbox. It protects just like expected. It doesn't add much bulk and the ease of getting it in and out of your pocket is just as easy as always with the commuter series of cases.

I'll have to agree with the other reviewers who said that it is hard to get on and off. My 9700 Otterbox Commuter wasn't nearly as hard to get on and off. Sometimes I worry that every time I have to take it off and back on for an occasional battery pull is gonna eventually ruin the case.

The only other complaint I have is that the screen cover has affected the touch response. Especially right after I wash them or put lotion on them (even after they "dry" in both cases). This is my first touch screen phone, but on my iPod Touch the screen protector didn't seem to have nearly the impact on sensitivity. So maybe it's not any better or worse on any other phone with any other screen protector, but like I said, this is my only example.

Otterbox is one of the main ways to protect your investment. The others--IMO--are Blackberry and Seidio. Each has their good points.

Otter box also makes a Defender which is bulkier, but perfect for construction, sports, camping, etc. They make a belt holster for that one also. The Commuter is slimmer, still giving an inner silicone cover plus a hard outter shell. If you are just going for a pocket carry, this is ideal if it drops.

There are two holster options, with the sleeper magnet, that will work. The Blackberry holster for the 9000 fits this Commuter-cased 9900, because the 9000 was a little larger. The ideal, and most talked about on Crackberry, is this cover and the Seidio Active holster. That is my rig now.

The silicone cover gives a pefect wrap of the phone without getting in the way of anything. (It has two holes near the flash leading me to believe it fits something else also. No big deal.)

The case comes with a screen protector that doesn't require wetting. Very similar to what is in the Seidio 2-pack that sells for $12.99. The slight difference is this one leaves a longer opening for both the speaker and camera/flash combo. The others have separate holes for each. Also, it is very slightly smaller thn others, but adequately covers anything you will touch. An applicator card and small microfiber are included. These have not reduced the touch sensitivity at all.

SO, why the two brands for a kit? Seidio sells the holster and a holster/case combo. I bought the combo at $2 more than the holster because I have a friend with no case at all. The Seidio Active case uses the silicone cover with a plastic back cover that only clips to the four corners of the front of the phone.
