My grandchild begged for it and I ordered it. It came quickly and looked good on her iPod. Three days ago she had it in her pocket as she was using the net to get leaves out of the pool. She lost her balance and fell in. She was on the deep end and did not bo all the 14 feet down. She certainly went further than 3 feet. She probably went down at least six or seven feet. She jerked herself out and came running to me. We got her iPod out of her tight pocket and dried it off. She was crying saying it would not work because she was further than 3 feet under. I turned it on and there was no damage. These grandkids will all get Otterboxe's for Christmas...

I purchased this case to replace my original OtterBox Defender Series Hybrid Case for iPod touch 4G (Black/Red). That one was OK, but the design allowed some dirt to get under near the top and bottom of the screen where the silicon was a little loose.
The new design addresses this. Gone is a loose silicone. The silicon is more firm and is locked in for the perimeter of the screen. The home button is a little firmer, but now seems quieter than the old design. The top on/off button functions the same. The volume buttons do not function as well though. I had no issues with the old design, but on the new one the volume buttons seem vague; the volume isn't always changed with a press of a button.
With the silicon being harder, the case has a firmer feel. It will slide across a table now whereas before it gripped everything... including dirt and lint. It will not come undone on the sides of the screen when you pull it from your pocket.
The sync/headphone cover is one piece. No issues with that. It stays in place far better than the old design and is easy to set back in place after you use it.
Somehow, Otterbox improved the screen protector. My old case showed an "oil slick" between the screen and protector. The new case shows no sign of the oil slick. Nice!
I think the only thing I would do to improve this case would be to make the silicon just a little bit softer. Not as soft as the old style case, but just enough to make the buttons easier to press.

This OtterBox Defender for my daughter's 4th Generation iPod touch has possibly even served better than buying a warranty for the device. It's almost as if Apple makes their iPods easy to drop...especially easy for kids to drop. Now don't get me wrong...putting an OtterBox on your iPod will not make it drop-proof; nor will it guarantee that if the device is dropped with OtterBox protection that the device will be safe...but the OtterBox sure does increase the device's chance of survival if a drop occurs.

The OtterBox will indeed protect the device, especially the screen, from scratches. Once you lock the OtterBox over your iPod, your chances of damaging the device are greatly reduced. In fact, your OtterBox actually becomes its own worst enemy when you try to take the dang thing off the device. There is an art to getting the OtterBox off the device, so try it a few times over something soft and big (like a bed). This case really locks into place. When you attempt to pry it apart for the first time you may not be prepared for the degree of difficulty it will give you, and I would suggest that either you advise your child to let you do it if there is a need to take it off or be sure to practice it with your child a few times. Because once you get the two locking pieces apart, it can be like, well....Have you even seen a kid struggle to attempt to open a new bag of cereal, only to be surprised when the resistance gives way launching the cereal all over the place? You do NOT want your new iPod to be launched out of the OtterBox.

I bought this item for my 8 year old Nephew. They have an Itouch 4g.
They love it! The case is built to withstand a kids daily abuse.

Easy to install and take off to clean. Has kept my iPod in nearly perfect condition even after a couple drops. The home and volume buttons also work perfectly with the case on. Kind of hoped it would have also covered the cameras and light sensor as well but they stay fairly clean beyond a little lint.

Only fault I have with it is the silicon sleeve. It's loosened around the top it doesn't lock into the channels of the hard plastic shell. Also the tab that normally covers the stereo jack has come completely off. The portion that protects the main 30 pin connection is still firmly attached though.

Going to see if I can get some warranty support since it's been around 11 months since I bought it in July 2012. I looked around the web and even at the papers that came with it, but I couldn't find a solid warranty date. I am guessing it's a year. Even if I can't get a replacement as it stands I'm happy with it.

*Well I got warranty service sorted. OtterBox approved it after I sent a couple pictures of the issue with my case. They are sending me a new one free of charge don't have to even send the current one back* Great company if I need a case for a phone or other device I am definitely going with OtterBox.
