4.0 out of 5 stars Cures Lap Boredom

I decided to start swimming for exercise. I wanted to have music with me so I purchased one of these Otterbox Waterproof cases for my iPod Nano 2G. When I got the item, I tested it as was recommended to me. It worked just fine without the iPod in it and only a folded Kleenex. So I took it swimming with my iPod attached and closed up in it. I'm a pretty enthusiastic fitness swimmer and like many fitness swimmers, do suffer a bit from lap boredom. I bought the Otterbox for my 2nd gen nano and am thrilled I did. Lap boredom is gone, and I get my tunz just like the treadmill bunnies!

The case is, indeed, a bit larger than the sleek nano, but you're still looking at something the size of a deck of cards, and is still smaller than a portable cassette or disc player. When swimming, I clip it to the back of my suit, and the clip is both strong and secure.

I often use the otterbox and lanyard when I'm wearing something that has no belt to clip it to when I'm doing something that might get my nano splashed (like washing dishes or cooking). The case is as sturdy as they say, protecting the nano from scratches as well as splashes or grease.

The only way it could be improved would be a way to connect it to a dock connector without removing it from the case.

I use it in conjunction with H2O Audio Waterproof Headphone and like the result very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers What it Claims, January 30, 2007

I am delightfully surprised in this product. With the Otterbox I can take my 2nd Generation iPod Nano to the beach, the lake, the river, out in the rain and fog, camping--well--everywhere, and not worry about exposing my Nano to the elements, damaging the Nano by dropping it, or soaking it should it fall into water while in the Otterbox. I performed a test by immersing the case into a large pot of water. I let it float for awhile, and then I weighted it down. I jiggled it around in the water, as well.

The case was in the water for about 2 hours. Within the box I had placed a piece of folded up papertowel. Not a single drop got through to the papertowel. I don't plan to swim while listening to my Nano, but should I be around water while listening to it, I feel very secure knowing the Otterbox is going to keep my iPod protected should my Nano be dropped accidentally into water.

Another feature that is icing on the cake, for me, is an attachable/detachable lanyard! One of the best features going for the iShuffle was the fact that it could be hung around your neck. I much prefer wearing my iPod using a lanyard to hooking it onto a waistband or belt, or stuffing it in a pocket (if one is available).

4.0 out of 5 stars i can't imagine how it could be improved, January 4, 2007

this case gives pretty serious protection to your nano. I appreciate the water/sand resistance, and not having to wet my pants if i drop my nano, but it does have a couple of small drawbacks... it increases the overall size and weight of the unit exponentially, and the membrane over the touchpad doesn't always allow for accurate touch translation. this being said, i can't imagine how these drawbacks can be eliminated without possibly elimiating other features of value.

1.0 out of 5 stars Leaked like a sieve!, November 23, 2008

I decided to start swimming for exercise. I wanted to have music with me so I purchased one of these Otterbox Waterproof cases for my iPod Nano 2G. When I got the item, I tested it as was recommended to me. It worked just fine without the iPod in it and only a folded Kleenex. So I took it swimming with my iPod attached and closed up in it. I hadn't swam for 5 minutes when I noticed water inside the case. As much water as was inside the case, I may as well have just been using my iPod without a case. And just for the record, I wasn't swimming deep, but just on the surface, so it wasn't a pressure issue. I took my iPod home and was able to dry it out. It worked again after a few days of drying. Thank goodness!

There were two problems with the Otterbox. One was that it seemed like I had to force my iPod into it. And this one was made for my type of iPod! But it sure didn't seem like it. Of course, the second was that it leaked very badly. I would have preferred to not give any stars at all, but they require at least one star.

I couldn't recommend this product to anyone who doesn't want a ruined iPod. I was so lucky that my iPod has survived. Well, it's survived so far. I'm not sure if it will keep working after the water got into it's works. It may eventually die a slow death.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good product but not compatible with the headphones, January 11, 2010

*Be careful when ordering this product!*

I ordered this product off of amazon.com as a Christmas present for a friend in '08. There was an offer to include compatible headphone so I got those. When my friend received them, the headphones WERE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH this particular case.

He was lucky in that he just exchanged them at a local shop, but buyers be warned!

It is a good product and works great when you have the right pieces. Suggestion-buy them both separately to make sure you have the right ones!

I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone would want to put an expensive ipod into this case without first testing it out. I basically took the empty case and submerged it. I TESTED IT! That's right, you don't have to have complete faith in any claim from a manufacturer. My test showed that it didn't leak at all and I then put my ipod in the case and it worked great. I use it about five times a week in the pool.

The only thing that I don't like is that you have to lock the ipod before you close the case. Basically the water pressure pushes on the controls of the ipod and it changes the volume if you don't lock the ipod first. So I usually make playlists before taking it to the pool so that I can lock my ipod and work out for an hour or two straight without having to reopen the otterbox midworkout to change albums or podcasts.

I really love this case.

I love this case. It does what it says. I only have two minor complaints. The case doesn't allow you to use the nike ipod with it so if you run, that's a drawback. It's also a little heavy. I rubbed a "hot spot" on my back with daily use with running.

I use the case when I swim laps or when I go cross country skiing. I don't have to worry about my iPod when I fall in the snow, which is great. The downsides to this case are that it is considerably bigger than the actual iPod and the headphone jack inside the case is in a hard-to-reach spot, so I'm afraid over time either the case or my iPod will break from the continous stress placed on both when you insert or remove the iPod.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ultimately disappointing, February 11, 2008

On one hand, I really like the protection the Otterbox affords. I'm not a swimmer, but am a disgustingly profuse sweater when I work out and the case has served my iPod well. However, the headphone connection on the Otterbox seems to wear out over time producing poor sound quality (e.g. static, loss of sound on one side). I'm on my second case in about 14 months and am again experiencing the problem. The company was nice enough to replace my first Otterbox at no charge, but at this point I'm ready to look for a waterproof alternative.
