I spent my childhood in a small town in Wyoming. It was a great place to grow up but I knew the world was out there waiting for me.

In high school, art was a passion of mine, but I failed art class. Because of that failure, I lacked the self-confidence to pursue it further. But it wasn't all my teachers fault.

I worked at many things before finally coming back to my original dream of painting, but again I faced rejection. Despite the rejection, I continued on with my work because I knew being an artist was what I wanted to do with my life.

After not having success with galleries, I was able to show my work at one of Wolfgang Puck's restaurants, Postrio, in San Francisco, where I have lived for the past 13 years. With a little luck and persistence, this exhibit led to many other things, like creating merchandise for Macys, and then on to my own line of clothing for kids.

I first got into children's publishing in 1998. I was able to take the messages that are part of my art and put them in a simple reading about acceptance, differences and empowerment for kids to feel better about themselves in a simple, fun way.

I have a lot of fun creating my books and I'm proud to know they are helping someone feel better about themselves in a silly, fun way.

Here are some of the fun, cool things that have happened to me and my books:

My work was displayed in the windows of FAO Schwarz in NYC and San Francisco, with interior displays of some of my product, including my first four books.

Todd Parr Shops within Toys R Us Japan were launched at all 101 stores with products exclusively available in Japan.

My Books have won several awards and have been featured on The Rosie O'Donnell show. Currently I have written and illustrated 28 books with two more for 2007 and 2008.

In 2004, I appeared in a Panasonic commercial and print ad.

I have partnered with Target, Reach Out and Read, People Magazine and several other organizations to promote reading.

In November 2005, my children's preschool show, ToddWorld premiered on TLC and Discovery Kids. The show has since been nominated for an Emmy and has won several other awards including the iParenting Media Award and the 2005 Humanitas Award for the episode entitled "Who's Your Best Friend"?. The Bronze medal in the New York Film Festival and an award for "Pizza on Earth" in the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. ToddWorld is now airing in almost every country around the world with a second season is in the works.

With the support of my family, especially my Dad and Grandma, I have been very successful but I do have another passion. I'd like to own my own restaurant!

As my Grandma used to say:
"You're a little lost now but I know you'll find your way".

5.0 out of 5 stars My Daughter's First Favorite Book, Too, March 19, 2006
This review is from: Otto Goes to the Beach (Hardcover)
Even for adults, reaching out and making friends can be daunting. Turns out the same is true for dogs. Who knew? Otto goes to the beach and can't seem to find a friend with the same interests as him. But his persistence ultimately pays off, and he eventually finds a friend who loves the same things that he does.

Yes, his shorts fall off while surfing and a cat laughs at his misfortune (something a child might find terribly hurtful). However, anyone who has a remotely prurient response to a cartoon dog losing his shorts - aside from being seriously troubled and a possible threat to society - has missed the point entirely. Fortunately, the point of each of the Otto books is spelled out in no uncertain terms on the last page.

The drawings are very simple and the color palette limited to primary and secondary colors, which is completely appropriate when designing for children at this stage of their development.

My daughter has a ton of books to choose from, yet asks for this one every night at bedtime. In fact, the reason I even came to this page is because it's time to buy a new copy. Todd Parr's books are a delight and address issues that we may have forgotten made us anxious when we were kids, and they're written with genuine affection for his readers. What more could you want from a children's book?

4.0 out of 5 stars The perfect Otto book!, March 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Otto Goes to the Beach (Hardcover)
Ok, perhaps not perfect to an adult, but the child...he loves it! A few years ago I obtained two Otto books (one on clearance at the bookstore, the other I can't recall) which my two year old son devoured! One night, he was looking at the back cover of the book and told me he wanted this title, and another Otto book pictured on the back. I then searched online and found every Otto title but this one. He was heartbroken and constantly begged for the beach book. I FINALLY found it and gave it to him right before our beach vacation. He was so excited! The Otto stories are very simplistic, and the artwork the same, which I think is why it appeals to preschoolers. My 18 month old frequently pulls the Otto books off the shelf himself and peruses the pages at his own leisure.

I dropped it a star, from a parent's perspective, because I agree with another reviewer that being laughed at for your pants falling down is an odd thing to put in a child's book, and I am trying to teach my 4 year old not to make fun of others. I also think that that children need to learn compromise, and in this book Otto basically doesn't want to be friends with anyone who doesn't like to do what he likes. However, I guess these are good teaching points for preschoolers.

That being said, I know my 4 year old would give it 10 stars if he could, and this is a preschool book, so the child's opinion is what matters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poor Otto, Great Book, November 30, 2006

This review is from: Otto Goes to the Beach (Hardcover)
Otto Goes to the Beach is a great book for small childern. Yes the character development is limited, the writing simplist, and the color choices and drawings primative - prefect for a small child. I would highly recommend this book for parent with childern under 5. Tood Parr has developed a highly loveable character and his books have great messages. Also check out Otto goes to school.
