Product Description

Help pets into vehicles and reduce strain or possible jumping injuries with the Otto Step hitch mounted pet assist step. The hitch step fits into a 2" Class III or IV vehicle receiver and does not require a hitch pin to hold it in place. Dogs weighing up to 200 lbs can then enter the vehicle's rear cargo hatch area or pickup truck bed by stepping onto an extra step, minimizing the chance of joint injuries, instead of trying to complete the entire distance at once. Features an 18" x 16" high traction, paw-friendly, platform surface which is lightweight and portable. The size is compact enough for vehicle storage to always have a handy step around when needed. Works with 1-1/4" hitch adapters for use with Class I or II receivers; the 1-1/4" hitch adapter is sold separately.

The Otto Step is exactly what I was looking for, especially since our Bernese Mtn Dog refused to use the ramp we bought and the ramps were simply too cumbersome (The weight, being one issue and getting them in & out of the Tahoe, plus the length of the ramps created an issue too; when parking was tight).

The Otto Step is great, it uses the standard 2x2 trailer hitch, it just slides in with no problems and then you just pull it out and toss it back in the truck. It's lightweight & very durable; the surface uses a grip-tape, so there is no question of slippage for our furry friends.

All in all it's a great alternative if your dog(s) don't like ramps...

We have a 2011 Honda Pilot and a 130-lb Great Pyrenees that sometimes rides in the back. The jump from the ground to the back is just about exactly at the limit of what my (3-year-old) dog can do (I've had to catch him once or twice, and he's very reluctant to make the jump). I was looking for some sort of ramp that would be big enough for him but small enough not to take up too much space in the car... and I couldn't find it. Then I found this, and it seemed perfect.

When it arrived, it looked exactly right - just a solid piece of strong plastic, no moving parts, nothing to break, and small enough to be easily stashable. So when we took our next trip, I happily put it on the car, walked the dog up to it... and he wouldn't step up to it. I tried running him up to it - no go. I tried putting his paws on it - no go. He eventually just went over to the side and jumped directly into the trunk.

He did the same thing on the way out - went around it. And the same thing on our next trip. So I'm pretty sure I wasted my money on this (but I'm not willing to return it, since it's now a little scuffed up from the trailer hitch).

My guess is that it seems too small to be a safe platform for him. It's not big enough for him to stand on it on all fours - he's too long. So I'm guessing he just doesn't want to run up it like stair steps, because it's so high. (It just about evenly splits the difference between the ground and the floor of the trunk, so that part is just right.)

So - great product, but maybe not big enough for really huge dogs.

A long time ago I used a ramp with an older dog I had at the time. The ramp was heavy and difficult to set up and at times a little difficult for my dog to use. I now have another dog who is a 78 lb Lab mix and 12 1/2 yr. and needs an easier way to get into my Jeep. I also have a small Lhasa Apso who is 7 yr. The Otto Step looked like a much easier approach to getting both dogs in the car without a lot of hassle. The only problem is that on my Jeep Cherokee the hitch is fairly high up and with the Otto step attached it was still a bit difficult for my old guy. Otto Step does make a drop down receiver (about $43 with shipping) which lowers it about 7 inches but this was too much of a drop for my need. An Amazon merchant sells a 4 1/2" drop down receiver for about $49 (including shipping). What I did instead was go to a local outfit that deals in trailer hitches and have them custom make a 4 inch drop down for about $40. Now the Otto Step is about half way between the ground and the lip of the Jeep entrance and is perfect for both dogs. The step is very solid yet light weight and compact but the major plus is ease of set up.

We have a 70 pound golden retriever and a mid-size SUV, and our vet told us that it was no longer good for his hips to have him jumping into and out of the back of the truck. The vet suggested we check into some type of ramp or step. The whole ramp idea seemed like too much of a pain, and then we came across the Otto Step on Amazon. The reviews were uniformly great, so we decided to give it a try. It works perfectly! No assembly, and no moving parts. Just slip it into the trailer hitch receiver and you're done. The fit is perfect, and the step is very sturdy. It only took a couple of tries with some treats, and our dog got the hang of using it with no problem. Highly recommended!

One thing about buying this through Amazon. For whatever reason, they have it listed in at least three different areas, and for three different prices when you factor in the shipping. Be sure that you search the entire Amazon site and compare the prices, then order accordingly. I saved almost 10 bucks with a quick bit of Amazon homework!

This step works great for protecting the dog's joints and for protecting the bumper of your SUV from toenails scampering to climb in. Light weight, easy to install, and works exactly as described.

We bought this when our older rottweiler cross started having joint problems. She and our other two big dogs were leery of it at first, particularly because it will move ever-so-slightly when they step on it, and it seems they felt it was unstable. It is definitely stable, so in the beginning I would put it in the hitch mount, then rest my foot on one edge of it to hold it steady. They then would jump up and into our Expedition with no issues.

Using this still requires your dog to be able to climb up 12-18", first from the ground to the step, then from the step to the vehicle, so if your dog is smaller and/or can't climb that far a ramp might make more sense.

But for our rottie with a blown out knee, it worked great.
