5.0 out of 5 stars He's what IAM is: EXCELLENT!, March 11, 2000
By
Al (Boston, USA) - See all my reviews
Finally I bought the CD! Incredible Tracks! Shurik'n is the 4th IAM member to go solo, Akhenaton, Imhotep(the man behind the sounds) and Kheops(the DJ of the group) already drop their bombs. The rapper made us wait for this one and I must tell you right away: IT WAS WORTH WAITING! This album is a pure chef-d'oeuvre of hard work and sharp lyrics that will make you wonder what we call lyrics in USA? From "Samurai" to "Manifeste", it's all well worked and weighted. The asiatic sounds(produced by the taoist Shurik'n himself) will touch any listener at a very deep level(even if you don't understand the words.

"Samurai" talks about Shurik'n as a street warrior ready to die with pride(like a samurai)

"Ou je vis" is a affected Jo narating to the aliens how life is on earth; take a look at the hook: "Look where I live People still dying from hunger, cold, boredom; You shut up or you pay the price; Look at those laughing; Conscience is like a stain, it can be wiped"

"J'attends" is the story of a thug in prison who's been sentenced for life

"Les Miens" tell us the story of the group IAM and how they've made it despite lack of faith from others

"Memoire" tells us how our choices affect our lives: "If I am where I am today it's because of the decisions I took at certain corners of my life"

"Lettre" is a letter of a grand father to his grand-son. "You will need a lot of boldness courage to prevent the dusts made by those around you and if one day you feel traped, you'll always have one person you can think of, and you know it!" Great stuff!

Than you have other great songs like "Reves", "Y'a pas le choix" and "Manifeste".

In conclusion this is an absolute must for hip-hop fans everywhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful rap, August 13, 2005

Shurik'n is a member of the French rap group IAM, and this is his first solo album, and this album is poetic rap at its finest. He adds Japanese influence to his beats and rhythm, and a couple songs feature his brother, Faf Larage. I fully agree with another reviewer that Shurik'ns music speaks straight to the soul and heart, and as an artist, Shurik'n is truly magnificient, if not a genius. My favorite track on this album is 'Manifiste' with Akhenaton, but to be honest, just about every single track on this album is a bomb. 'J'attends', and 'Reves' are classics. You don't need to speak French to appreciate this album, although it does help to understand the lyrics. This album is such a great joy to listen to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shuriken is a genius!, January 21, 2000
By
I only had to listen to 3 songs("La Lettre", "Les Miens", "Manifeste" to convince me to get that album. Influenced by the oriental culture(Martial Arts...), Shuriken delivers a bomb with his first solo album. This album proves that he's as excellent in solo as with IAM. Personally between "L'Ecole du Micro d'Argent"(IAM,1997) and "Ou Je Vis" it's hard for me to tell which one is the best Rap album(US, Canada & France) I've ever heard. I think any rap/hip-hop fan would appreciate this album. It's a BOMB!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest rapper alive, October 11, 1999
By A Customer
Shurik'n is one of the foremost members of IAM, probably of the greatest rap group around right now. I must admit I still haven't heard such intelligence, emotion and grace in any other rapper's flow. His lyrics go straight to my soul (i guess, unfortunately you need to understand french...). This album is deep and intimate more so than any album released so far in either france or the US. Just check out the songs "Si j'avais su","Samourai", "Ou je vis". God, it really sends chills down my spine. I also recommend listening to L'Ecole du Micro d'Argent by IAM. Overall this album is a gem, with edgy backgrounds (even more atmospheric than those of the RZA himself) and tight, sincere lyrics.

This CD is so good, even if it was out 2 years ago it's still clearly excellent it gets every one say: "Yo, what a flow !" If tou are into Hip Hop and/or Martial Arts, you'll like the music and the lyrics about the ancient japanese art of war; Samurai... Check also for the album "La Garde" witch are Shurik'n and his brother Faf Larage !

5.0 out of 5 stars Le vrai hiphop Marseillais, March 6, 2001

Cet album est la bombe! For those interested in French hip-hop this is a must. Shurik'n has proved his talents with IAM and now his solo album frappe a fond. If you don't speak french and particularly Marseillais, you won't understand a damn thing, but the beats, choice of music and funky flow will suffice.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Picasso of french rap, January 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Ou Je Vis (Audio CD)
Ive just recently obtained this album and its a must have album for anybody that wants authentic rap. U.S rap is often guilty of dropping lame beats but Shurik'n's beats accompanied with a touch of martial arts is the bomb. Fortunately i understand french after living there, however non-french speakers dont worry because the beats on this album will surely make you play the tracks over and over. Especially 'Lettre', 'Reves',and 'ou je vis'.
