This book (or shall I say this masterpiece) deserves to be read for its intelligence and elegance of style. Annan is not only a scholar of immense erudition (this species, contrary to many people think, is far from rare), he is a writer whose profundity of insight and wealth of wit are unrivalled except by a very few.
