5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Children's Album I still Listen to
When I was in the fourth grade, my Dad bought us a copy of "For Our Children." Now I am 19 years old and I still listen to it every day. Some of the songs on this album are also written by the artists who did them. Child of Mine, for example was written by Carole King, Country Feelings by Brian Wilson, and a couple of other songs I can't even think of. All...

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware of Commemorative Editions
I looked forward to this re-issue, but was unpleasantly surprised to discover that it's not exactly the original album. For instance, "Golden Slumbers," the duet with Jackson Browne and Jennifer Warnes, is about two minutes shorter than the version on the earlier CD, and the "new" cut significantly diminishes the force of the original. Is this...

All of Rhino Records profits from "For Our Children," are donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, to help bring hope for children with AIDS and an end to this desease. I hope that Rhino Records who did this, decides to make a Christmas album in the "For Our Children," series. FOR GOODNESS SAKE, STOP READING THIS REVIEW AND BUY THIS CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars IT'S ABOUT TIME!, December 16, 1999

This is one of the *best* children's CD's ever recorded...our daughter listened to this album to go to sleep every night for over a year. Now that we have another child, and our venerable old cassette had just about had it, we have been looking to replace it for quite some time now, only to find that it was no longer in print. I was looking (in vain) all over the 'net today to find a used music dealer with a copy of this CD, and finally came back to amazon.com to get the details of the CD in order to help search, and lo and behold, it's been RE-RELEASED! I bought 3 copies, and if anyone out there has young children, BUY THIS ALBUM NOW! hehe

5.0 out of 5 stars From Ziggy Marley to Barbara Streisand a masterpiece., November 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: For Our Children: 10th Anniversary Edition (Audio CD)
This is the best collection of its kind. It's been out of print for years so hopefully this reissue will garner it the attention it deserves. Buy it for yourself and you'll probably buy a copy for everyone you know. With or without children, they should love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tunes for kids of all ages!, December 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: For Our Children: 10th Anniversary Edition (Audio CD)
We love this music! Great artists with great tunes which have been in our family 10 years- and hope to have around for 10 more! The best for our 2 year old, is Little Richard singing "Itsy Bitsy Spider", and our 9 year old thinks Bette Midler is awesome when she sings "Blueberry Pie". We don't have a road trip (including to the corner store), without it. Can I say more? Well worth the money, and helps a great cause.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gartan Mother's Lullaby, February 7, 2004
By
This review is from: For Our Children: 10th Anniversary Edition (Audio CD)
I am both surprised and disappointed that nobody has mentioned the Gartan Mother's Lullaby. What is the Gartan Mother's Lullaby? Why, it's an absolutely lovely Donegal traditional lullaby. However, the most beautiful version I ever heard of it was sung-- surprise surprise, by Merryl Streep. Who knew she could sing? It's an absolutely beautiful rendition, perhaps the most beautiful you'll ever heard of this song. Magical.

The liner notes don't explain much about the song, so here it goes:

Sleep O babe, for the red bee hums the silent twilight's fall,
Aoibheall from the grey rock comes, to wrap the world in thrall.
A leanbhan O, my child, my joy, my love my heart's desire,
The crickets sing you lullaby, beside the dying fire.

Dusk is drawn and the Green Man's thorn is wreathed in rings of fog,
Siabhra sails his boat till morn, upon the Starry Bog.
A leanbhan O, the paly moon hath brimmed her cusp in dew,
And weeps to hear the sad sleep-tune, I sing O love to you.

Aoibheall - (EE-val) Meaning: the name of the queen of the northern fairies
leanbhan - (LYAN-uh-van) Meaning: little child, baby
Tearmann - (CHAR-uh-muhn) Meaning: tearmann = sanctuary, refuge, or church land, name of village near Lough Gartan
Siabra - (SHEE-vra) a prankster class of trooping fairies, also spelled Shefro or Siofra.

This song alone is worth the entire Album. But "Autumn To May" is also a beautiful rendition.

5.0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this one, February 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: For Our Children: 10th Anniversary Edition (Audio CD)
My husband and I and our four children took a three week trip across the country last summer, listening to this tape several times a day, at first because the kids liked it, then because the adults had fallen in love with it. We never got tired of it, though we did wear it out and had to buy another. There is no other kid's tape in our vast collection which I could abide for so many repetitions.

Grown-ups and children alike love the music, both the catchy tunes and the lullabies. It is so much fun to hear the "stars" do lullabies. Truly a must have.

I purchased this for my grandchild but now will get another for myself. It's a foot stomping, hip twisting and yet heart wenching while delivering a beautiful message to children everywhere. I just LOVE it!

This is a great CD that we can all listen to in the car! My kids love the songs and I love hearing some of my favorite singers doing something different. Bob Dylan singing This Old Man just has to be heard! I would definitely recommend this CD to parents.

I Love this album. I would play it for the children in my toddler class when I taught that age. They would dance and try to sing to it. Now that I have a son, I play the album for him, and he loves it. He babbles and coos to it. I highly recomend it to any parent that is looking for a fun, simple to listen to cd or tape for their children without being scared of the lyrics.
