I can't believe I'm the first to review this book. This is a must read for anyone serious about their relationship with God. Regardless of how long you have been a Christian or how many years you have studied the Bible, the study of covenant is like the bow on the package that holds it all together. I highly recommend this book for personal or group study.

Kay Arthur takes on the overwhelming task of explaining the meaning of the Covenant relationship believers have with God. She details the scripture surrounding this topic. It is a life changing concept that the Almighty God would desire even enter into this type of relatiohsip with us. It is a masterful book that deserves more than one reading.

This is an excellent companion to Kay's Precept upon Precept course on covenants. It opened my eyes to concepts that I was struggling with regarding covenants, and helped ground me even firmer in my faith in my Saviour Jesus Christ. Thanks Kay you are a blessing for us "new" Christians.

This book serves two primary functions: to inspire and to educate. I have used this book as a guide for a Bible Study: it proved successful for both a group study and a 1-on-1 study.
Regarding "life application", it runs deeply throughout this book, despite the comment above by an unhappy reader. This book may not give you a 5-step plan to a covenant with God, but it makes clear all the underlying priciples and requirements for Covenant. The application is internal, not external: simply put, it is about viewing God in the correct way so the correct behavior will follow. The book is organized in an inspirational way: Kay Arthur's thoughts build on each other in a fashion to gradually accustom the reader to the ideas involved in Covenant. There is a lot of "back-and-forth" as far as Biblical history is concerned, but this adds a level of interest to the reading. Kay Arthur includes a fair amount of Hebrew and Greek words, their meanings, and cultural significance: because of this, the book is quite educational despite its inspirational format. Of particular interest to me were the endnotes of each chapter: she lists all the Bible Verses and Bible Study Aides she refers to in the text. I am quite a logical-minded person (I'm a Physicist) and appreciate the simplicity of linear thought when I can get it (!): this book is far from linear, however! Although the language of this book is very easy (quite informal and conversational in parts...that's Kay Arthur's style), the train of thought was not readily apparent to me. I had to read it a couple of times to glean all the information out of it. More artsy types would have no problem, I think. However, even for more structured temperaments, it is certainly a book worthy of a good "chew"! This book shows Biblically that Jesus is the New Covenant promised by the prophets in fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham. The purpose of the Old Covenant with Moses was to reveal our need for Jesus, not to add to or invalidate God's promise to Abraham. As Covenant partners with God through Christ, we should serve Him even to death, surrendering ourselves daily to His will, relying on the provision He grants us (as His Covenenant partners) to do so.

Words fail me. I think this is one of the most important books we can read to begin understanding this staggering love God has for his children. Many fears are laid to rest and peace takes it place. Covenant is so huge and so wonderful and so comforting. I have ordered five of these books for family and friends and will be ordering five more. Over time, I hope to give a copy to as many people as I can. This book will be a blessing for anyone who reads it.

"Our Covenant God" was mentioned in our weekly Bible Study by our Pastor as we began the study of the covenant God made with man. Pastor said he reads it at least once a year. Well, I thought perhaps I should see what has our man of God so commited to reading this book. From the first page to the last it was like manna from heaven. Each chapter opened my eyes to the significance and depth of God's love for me and His unfailing commitment to my salvation; His unending grace that he would build into His contract and my daily life a way for me to understand and walk in His love and His power and understand His mercy towards me. I was born into a covenant. When I gave my life to Jesus Christ and was born again, God's covenant was again opened to me in a new and different way, When I sin, God His covenant covers me. Through communion His covenant reminds me of the price paid for my sin and salvation. Through the marriage covenant, I am not ony a bride of the church, but of my spouse. There is no highway in life I can turn to now and not realize my convenant relationship with God. Thank you, Kay Arthur, for making our covenant relationship with God so crystal clear!

The author gives a wonderful overview of God's covenants through scripture and the importance of them, not only theologically, but practically. This book opened my eyes to have a deeper understanding of God's infinite love and commitment to Israel and His children for all time. A must read! God used it to change my life.

"Our Covenant God" studies the covenants God has made with humans (as recorded in the Bible). The focus was mainly on the blood covenants found in the Bible and how, since it was so binding between humans, that should give us confidence in the covenant God has made with us. She quoted information from a book by a person who studied blood covenants all over the world and throughout time to help provide cultural background information.
I thought that Kay Arthur did a good job describing how covenants work and showing them "in action" in both the Old and New Testament. She'd take an aspect of covenant making, describe it, show an example of it in the Bible, and then make an application point about it before moving on. Very good information. I'd highly recommend this book to Christians, especially those who haven't read information on blood covenants before. |
