Book Description

February 28, 2001
While Reviving Ophelia and countless other books have awakened parents to the importance of providing our daughters with the emotional support they need to thrive in todays world, until now there has been no book to address the unique health needs of these girls. Our Daughters Health does just that. Written by an award-winning journalist and parent of two daughters, this comprehensive guide to good health habits for girls offers a wealth of information on everything from fitness, nutrition, and skin care to mental health issues, reproduction, and drugs and alcohol. Drawing on the latest findings it provides clear, concise, and reassuring advice.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

At a time when women "are demanding top-notch, gender-specific health care, our daughters have one of the worst preventive health profiles of any group," according to Roan, a medical writer. Her book is aimed at parents of girls from age 6 to 16. She outlines the particular health risks for young girls: 58 percent have been on diets; 1 in 6 girls in grades 5 through 12 say they have binged and purged; 66 percent have had sex by grade 12; 34 percent of high-school girls smoke cigarettes; 85 percent of girls are not getting enough calcium. The health of young girls is getting less attention as busy parents assume that the girls' needs are being met. Roan provides extensive data on health-care trends among girls but also offers interviews with health-care providers, parents, and girls themselves. She offers valuable resources and practical suggestions, such as ways to promote a healthy self-image. The book is organized by subject (genetics, athletics, reproductive, and mental health) and includes special chapters on preadolescence and adolescence. Vanessa Bush

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully informative book for anyone raising a girl!, February 20, 2001
This review is from: Our Daughters' Health: Practical and Invaluable Advice for Raising Confident Girls Ages 6-16 (Paperback)
This wonderful book should be read by every parent of a girl! Girls, including ages 6 through 16, meet with certain health problems -- both emotional and physical. "Our Daughters' Health covers such topics as skin care and body piercings, to weight issues and how to have healthy bones. It also discusses a woman's overall image -- including how the media portrays them, role models, sexism, etc.

Besides discussing the general health issues, parents will learn how they can promote healthy habits for their adolescent daughters. This book will show parents what their daughter's need for healthy development -- thus allowing parents to give their daughters the best possible start in life. Each chapter of the book includes helpful questions that you can ask your doctor regarding your daughter, and a list of resources. In addition, readers will find charts, statistics, and myths/realities scattered throughout the book.

My ParenTime recommends "Our Daughters' Health" to anyone interested in understanding and learning how to raise more confident and healthy girls. It's also recommended to anyone caring about girls ages 6 - 16. The book is well-written, direct, and packed with information!
