Beautiful, smart music,

These guys just get better and better -- and when I first heard them I thought they were something special. Amazing songwriting, beautiful music. "Slowdance" is spectacular. If you love and appreciate good, smart music, you will love Deadman.

The Best of a Hybrid Maintains Roots,

This is "Calexico" meets "O Brother Where Art Thou" with a little "Buddy and Julie Miller" thrown in for good measure. All compelling, original, folksy but intellectual. Tough to top. Worthy music to chase Townes Van Zandt. Seriously.

Deadman for America,
By sarahmacred "sarahmacred" (Dallas, Tx) - See all my reviews

There's gospel for the Red States; elegance and ambience for the Blue - thsi is a band that should be in the national eye.
Highlights begin with, of course, "Absolom, Absolom"- an apocolyptic, unapologetic Sam Cooke-style gospel song that never fails to bring the crowd to their feet at shows. "It won't Be Long" on the other hand, intimates instead of announcing; Steve's vocals creep across the spare instrumentation. My last favorite is "Brother," with Sherilyn's graceful vocals filling in shadowy gaps in the melody and making this song, reminicient of Joshua Tree era preacher-Bono, a standout. I offer the comparisons to help new fans, but really, there's nothing derivitive about this exceptional band that elegantly dances across folk, rock, pop, and alt-country genres. Definitely worth a listen.

I like haunting music and this is good stuff. Voices and instumentation high quality too. I'm glad I heard it on NPR.

I saw this duo as an opening act last night. After a couple of songs they transported my brain to a new place. I've never heard anything with quite this blend of Alt-Country meets Cowboy Junkies plus Roxy Music with the production a la U2. After their set we went over and met the group and bought the CD which we popped into the car for the 60 mile drive home. The engineering of this disk is really crisp, absolutely perfect. This is a great group, doing something so musically unique I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Read the other reviews. Same here. Hard to define style. And I tried! Each song holds its' own. A bit "folksy", a bit "dillanesque", a hint Pink Floyd"ish" and somewhere they found an electric guitar. Reminded me of Robbie Robertson. Not high energy, but high intensity, sometimes introspective. I really like this CD. Everything just "outside the box".

Country roots or rock?,

It's hard to describe this cd. I purchased it for the first song on the cd "When the music's not forgotten" and I love that track. It's a country folk type tune with a message. After that, the cd defies descripton or at least categorization. Sometimes you'll hear country, then a pop ballad, then some rock or folk in their music. There's even one song that people have said reminds them of Pink Floyd. So don't try to define or pigeon what type of music this is. Just buy it. You won't be sorry.

I am not sure why a husband-wife group call themselves Deadman, but the music is fantastic. It is hard to fathom how such talent is largely unknown. They are great.

I bought this after I had heard one of the songs on a tv program. I have really been enjoying this cd, so glad I took the risk and bought it.

There is only one song on the CD that I really like, but I am still glad I purchased it. Deadman are good, but not particularly my type of music.
