Please ignore the review based upon regional format - to solve this simply purchase a duel region player.
This is a great miniseries - normally I hate such things. This film is essential viewing for those interested in modern Britain - wholly recommended

A must see, February 18, 2010
This review is from: Our Friends in the North (DVD)
Ranked #25 of the best 100 British TV series of all time. Nine episodes follow four friends from 1964 to 1995, tracing not only the character's arcs, but the political and social events as they changed as well. Very enjoyable and great acting.
This is very difficult to find now, sadly. Why would one of the most celebrated series of British television not be available on DVD?
As for the ninny who whined about getting a PAL version of the DVD, please read the description before you buy, or, better yet, get a multi-region DVD player. They are not at all expensive. Better still, get the film industry to stop putting out regions on DVDs completely!

(Probably) Best drama BBC has ever made, August 29, 2010
This review is from: Our Friends in the North (DVD)
This series is the epitome of what the BBC stands for. It is supposed to inform, educate and entertain. This series does all three magnificently. The concept, the scripting, the casting, the producing, the editing - all of it is brilliant from start to finish.
When the BBC produces its most superlative work, as here, no other broadcaster in the world can touch it.
For people who lived through the era in question, who relate to the political world and the community around them as we all should, and who also know Newcastle upon Tyne and the peculiar socio-political history of the Northeast, this is far more than a play and far more than television. It is not escapism but life itself in the most tangible sense.
And it's far better than that Bond stuff which Craig has appeared in recently!
Much television in recent years is junk - even in Britain, whose output is better than most.
This, on the other hand, while painfully raw and brutally true to life in parts, is the best of the best, written by the best, starring the best and broadcast by the best.
Do yourself a favour - buy it, especially now it is finally available on DVD for a proper price.
